8 Well on our way Dear sailors and friends, 2010 was, in more ways than one, a very successful year for SMU sailing. Whether on or off the water, our sailors have flown the flag high and have done the school proud. Look Back at 2010 Off the water, we reaped the benefits of the excellent work put in by the previous executive committee as we chalked up several prestigious team and individual awards including the SSU Competitive Excellence Award, USL Team of the Year award. This truly is a collective effort and is an excellent testimony to the hard work and commitment put in by every member of the sailing club. On the water, SMU Sailing once again impressed with numerous podium finishes and multiple noteworthy performances which served to impress the growing number of friends of sailing from all over the world that we have been making over the years. A few of the more notable results include podium finishes at the Royal Langkawi International Regatta, the Koh Samui International regatta, and the Western Circuit Sailing Regatta. (A full complete list of the competitions and results can be found in the training report on Pg 15) Major Events The SMU Sailing club was involved in 4 major events in 2010 as the club sought to contribute to Student Life in SMU, improve the level of keelboat sailing among the tertiary institutes as well as to serve the larger sailing community in Singapore. Sailing 101, the SMU Sports Union (SSU) Sports Camp 2010, the NTU Sailing Clinic and the Western Circuit Sailing Regatta did just that. These events were built on the successes of years gone by and in 2010, the benchmark was again pushed up another notch thanks to the hard work put in by each organizing team. (For description of events, please refer to the External Relations Report on Pg 18) Affiliation To SSF This year we also saw the introduction of the club membership scheme which came as a result of the clubs affiliation with the Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF). Under this scheme, members of the sailing club will be eligible to race under the banner of SMU Sailing, be eligible for subsidies to compete in major regattas and enjoy other special privileges just as discounts on SMU Sailing team attire and priority for training. This scheme is in its infancy so you can expect more to come. 05 President s Address 2010 WAS, IN MORE WAYS THAN 1, A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR SMU SAILING.

9 06 President s Address NEVER FORGET THAT WHEN YOU ARE A PART OF SMU SAILING, YOU ARE PART OF A FAMILY TOGR The 2010 Top Of The Gulf Regatta saw one of the largest ever SMU contingents in an international regatta with 3 entries in the Platu Class and 1 in the Cruising Class. Building on the success of the SMU-UWA sailing exchange, the club played host to 3 sailors from UWA, Remy, Adam and Jim as they teamed up with our club members to take on the best of the region. SMU Sailing did extremely well this year, finishing a credible 5 th, 6 th, and 7 th in the Platu class and 7 th in the cruising category 13 th Western Circuit Sailing Regatta This year, SMU Sailing once again co-organized the Western Circuit Sailing Regatta with Raffles Marina. In its 13 th edition, the regatta has grown over the years and saw over 250 competitors this year. This years WCSR also saw the inclusion of the Access 2.3 Dinghy class and the Moths for the first time adding to the colour and excitement. The charity segment was also stepped up with the addition of a charity car wash element manned by our enthusiastic SMU volunteers. In total, we managed a total of $20,000 for Sailability Singapore, double the amount raised last year. It was a special WCSR for yet another reason as SMU and RM renewed the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reaffirming the high commitment level by each organization. (A brief report of the 13 th WCSR can be found in the external relations report on Pg 19) Changing Faces In April, the club bid farewell to a special group of people who have sacrificed much during their time as SMU Sailors so that we could be where we are today. As they make the transition from student to professional, we wish them every success in their jobs and in their lives and we thank them for their invaluable contributions. As the new academic year commenced, the club welcomed 15 new sailors to the team. As they begin a new phase of their lives in SMU I have only one thing to say. Never forget that when you are a part of SMU Sailing, you are a part of a family. The SMU Sailing Club has indeed grown from strength to strength since our humble beginnings and we are no longer simply an University Sailing Team. The success of the club has been and will always be the success of all its members and with that I would like to thank all of you for the support shown and the effort made. I wish you all fair winds and great success in all your endeavours. Always remember The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, the realist adjusts the sails. 11 Safety first Dear sailors, First of all, let me thank all of you for your great support towards our ex-co for this past one year. In this past year, we have seen ups and downs, laughter and joy. However, as part of a big family, we are always able to put our differences aside and emerge more united. Role of safety officer Taking on the role of safety officer is one of my main responsibilities. Safety remains our topmost priority and should not be compromised at all costs. During our term, we re-visited and finetuned certain aspects of the safety guidelines for practicality reasons. While there were zero major incidents, there were minor lapses which could have been avoided. Safety measures should very much be each and every sailor s responsibility. Moving forward, the club will continue to uphold and enhance the overall level of safety of all members. Land Training Role Over the past year, I took over physical training to lighten some of the heavy workload from the TDO. PT remains very much a weekly affair on Wednesday evenings. We included circuit training and games to add variety to our usual strength training. While keeping us fit for strong winds conditions, PT also serves as an avenue of bonding between seniors and juniors. Thus, I would urge all members to join us weekly for PT sessions (we need more players for captain s ball)! SMU Sailing s Social Events All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Social events and gatherings are an important tradition of our club and should be continued for the years to come. This year, we held our annual Sail Camp at our favourite Raffles Marina and ended it with a buffet dinner at the long awaited Captain s Table. Many thanks to Lia who invited us to her place for Mid-Autumn Festival, complete with mooncakes and usual photo of SMU SAILING formed by sparklers. The year ended with an awesome Christmas party which was attended by students, policemen, soldiers and even an air stewardess! A big thank you to Shaun for opening up his place to accommodate all of us. On a personal note, this term in the exco has taught me many things and once again, I would like to thank every member for the great support. Special thanks to Andrew for his unwavering support towards the club, without which we would not have come so far. Last but not least, my greatest appreciation to my fellow exco members for supporting each other through these good and tough times. 12 Continue to excel Dear Friends Being one of the busiest sports club and active groups in the university, SMU Sailing continues to excel in 2010 through careful execution of its operations. The executive committee, with the support of the secretary, plays an important role in facilitating the smooth running of the club. As the club membership expands steadily each year, new initiatives were implemented to improve the record of members data. With the suggestion of the previous executive committee, the update of the sailing census was carried out using Google Docs this year. The new procedure proved to be more efficient and comprehensive in updating and extracting members information. Administrative Duties It is the duty of the secretary to nominate the club and her members for potential awards and recognition. Other duties include acting as the liaison person in-charge of the account, coordinating swimming certification tests, documentation of minutes of meetings, registration for regattas, update of boat documents (e.g. insurance, boat licenses, IRC certifications) etc. In essence, my role has revolved around the administration of club matters. Awards in 2010 During the past year, SMU Sailing and her members have been nominated and recognized for their efforts to promote student life and sports excellence. 15 The bottom line is Hello SMU Sailing, The buzz word for the globe has been financial austerity and the finances of SMU sailing club have been no different. However, even with this backdrop, we are pleased to say that we have managed to compete in every competition, repair every hole (in the boats and sails) and also replace things that have sunk to Davy Jone s locker. High utilization rate In terms of utilization, we have managed to achieve an overall utilization rate of 98% which is one of the highest amongst the CCAs in the school. In terms of the day to day finances, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris, Yong Tat, Shaun and Zixian for making a significant amount of purchases for the club. Without them, many of the new things that you see in the toolboxes and the container room would not be there. Also, I would like to thank Andrew for managing the sport excellence budget. Much time and effort has been put into managing that budget and a lot of good has come out of that in terms of funding our overseas trainings, competitions and also new sails. Income & Expenditure The next section will consist of 2 parts income and expenditure. This should give you an idea of where the clubs money is being spent on and a general idea of the club s financial health. 12 Financial Report Understanding our income Our main sources of funding continue to come from SSU s budget and OSL Sport s Excellence scheme and this pretty much covers our daily expenses and fees for local competitions. In addition to that, we have collected money for Sail camp, sailing membership and sailing 101 and the club expects the latter two to continue in the short to medium term. Total money added to our reserves was just under $1200. Breaking down our expenses For 2010, our main drivers for expenditure remain unchanged. The table below aggregates our expenses into 3 main categories. A snapshot from the the OSL Sports Excellence budget is also included. 16 I HOPE you know Dear SMU Sailing: Through the continuous support from OSL, our team manager Andrew, and the hard work of each and every sailor, SMU Sailing has been able to build a reputation of high performance for ourselves. Being given countless opportunities to compete locally and overseas, each regatta has been able to strengthen and enhance the skills of our sailors through the different conditions experienced and the exposure to different sailing scenes wherever we go. While our sailors learn from the regatta itself, preparation for it also has our sailors training hard to perfect their manoeuvres on board, and also learning how to read the conditions around them so as to factor them into the different courses taken out at sea. Maiden Voyages This year also saw some of our sailors taking part in certain regattas for the first time. These include the March Match Cup held in Perth, the Koh Samui Sawadee Regatta and the 4 th China Cup International Regatta all of which we were able to participate through exclusive invitations as a result of SMU Sailing s reputation being built over the years. These opportunities have given out sailors memories they will never forget. Match Racing In a bid towards moving towards more match racing competitions and after months of training and coaching by Remy Donraadt who supervises the Sailing Team in the University of Western Australia, our sailors took part in the World University Match Racing Competition held in Greece. The intense training and sacrifices made paid off for the team in the end as the team emerged 5 th overall amongst 12 other talented and experienced competitors from all over the world. Selection Policy Furthermore, in hoping to make our selections more transparent and in light of valuable feedback, the Exco decided to release the sailor s attendance every month which ultimately contributed to their selection of that particular regatta. This timely snapshot of the attendance has given sailors a mini progress report on their performance over the selection period. While still sticking to the 3Cs Competency, Compatibility and Commitment, we never compromised our selection criteria and always kept safety first - which always saw us adhering strongly to the ratio of 2 junior sailors to 1 senior sailor whenever on board. 17 14 Training Report ALWAYS REMEMBER, PLAY HARD, BUT TRAIN HARDER New Training System Contrary to what was done in the past few years, we decided to begin our freshmen s sailing calendar with the Singapore Straits Regatta instead of the Top of the Gulf Regatta. This meant rigorous training of the 15 new sailors. And also, in order to enhance their learning experience, a new training programme was put into place with the help of the Exco members. One where 3 phases are pre-arranged and each phase focuses on different learning aspects and objectives of the training Phase 1 Focus is on an introduction to sailing Phase 2 Focus is on the perfection of manoeuvres on board and reading the conditions out at sea Phase 3 Focus is on racing rules, application of rules and racing tactics. At the time of this report, our sailors are completing phase 3 of their training in preparation for the Straits Regatta held in late January. In addition to the new phases put in place, the new training regime set out when the freshmen joined us is such that every sailor in the club can sign up for water trainings at regardless of whether they are signing up for a regatta or not. This would then give every sailor in the club an opportunity to have a training session out at sea, and not limit slots to specific sailors only. At the end of the day, while every competition sees different sailors signing up and getting selected for that specific regatta, as a whole, the members of SMU Sailing continue to remain a bonded family with the help of the mentorship learning system we have in the club, and the different activities that the club arranged throughout the year which brings everybody closer together. With that, I am glad to have been able to serve and contribute to SMU Sailing as the Training and Development Officer. And firstly, I would like to thank my Exco members Chris, Yongtat, Richard, Zixian and Caimin, for a wonderful term, and friendships that I am ever grateful and thankful for. The members of SMU Sailing as well, because without your hard work, we would never have been able to achieve the results and reputation that we now carry with us. 20 DON T TELL ME THE PROBLEM, TELL ME THE SOLUTION!! Dear SMU Sailing By now, I m sure that everyone is familiar with the phrase in the heading. I hope that I have been successful in emphasizing the importance of taking care of our sailing equipment and the hassle involved in replacing items lost or misplaced. Refinement of penalty system The 5 th EXCO introduced a penalty system which entails that people who lose or damage school equipment will be made to fork out a sum of money for the replacement. Besides the monetary penalty, the responsibility to make the purchase lies with the indivdual. This year, the 6 th EXCO enforced and refined the system making it more transparent. With this system in place, I have been making fewer trips to Raffles Marina and Marintech, which is good news for the next Logistics Manager! Overcoming Obstacles It was my second year as the logistics manager for the Sailing Club. When I assumed my role as Logistics Manager in 2008, I was faced with a steep learning curve and huge challenge to a situation which I had no prior experience in. I m proud to say that I managed to overcome all the obstacles and constantly kept our boats in good racing condition. Logistics Filing System A filing system for incident and missing item reports have been implemented and we will see enforcement of these forms in the coming weeks. Based on my experience, this will improve the overall logistics management. This system will allow sailors to keep track of the inventory and 17 Logistics Report reduce the dependency on the Logistics Manager. On a personal note, I hope everyone has enjoyed our company this year and will continue to sail with the SMU Sailing family. I would like to thank everyone for believing in me and for giving me not only your support but also your trust for the past two years. Not forgetting Andrew who is always around to support and advise us. Last but not least, my fellow EXCO members for the great support and encouragement. These few years have been a wonderful chapter in my life. Update on Club Assets Our EXCO has made some purchases during this past year. 3 new tiller extensions 1 J24 traveller (car and track) 2 Platu traveller tracks Container (storage room) New halyards and sheets With this, I would like to wish the new EXCO all the best in their term. It will be a challenge to continue to refine the logistics system but one which I have every faith that they will be successful in. Happy Sailing! 21 Reach for the stars Dear Sailors & Friends The role of external relations was again kept as a single position for 2010 with great emphasis on promoting SMU Sailing to the school so as to bolster the membership numbers as well as organizing events to promote the sailing club, strengthen the bonds between club members and to get to know one another better off the water. Organization of Events The events organized were centred around 4 themes which served as the main driving forces in the execution: 1. Promote the sport of sailing to SMU students. 2. Help the development of the university sailing scene 3. Support the Singapore keelboat sailing scene 4. Social Events & Team Bonding Brief Event Review 2010 was a year of improvement and sustainability on the events front to great success. Sailors from UWA teamed up with SMU Sailors to compete in TOGR 2010 with positive results. This was a continuation of the programme held in 2009 in Perth. Also, the NTU sailing programme was held again held as a way to encourage NTU students to try out sailing with the intention of getting their sailing club up and running. This has proved very successful with the official establishment of the NTU Yachting Club in Events for SMU Students such as sailing 101, SSU sports camp and level 1 are all designed to promote the sport of sailing to the student population and our booming membership numbers for 2010 speak for themselves. The annual sail camp, mooncake festival gathering and christmas party are opportunities for sailors to gather in the name of fun and build the strong relationships the sailing club has become synonymous with. The most significant event for SMU Sailing is the Western Circuit Sailing Regatta. Co-organized by SMU & Raffles Marina (RM), this event has grown in strength over the years to become one of the biggest and most eagerly anticipated keelboat regatta in Singapore. A full report of this event can be found on the next page. All in all, the success of any event is determined by its participants and for this the 6 th exco would like to thank all who have contributed to this success in one way or another. We look forward to 2011 and we are confident this enthusiasm for external relations will continue to push SMU Sailing on to greater heights. 22 13 th SMU RM Western Circuit Sailing Regatta The 13 th SMU-RM WCSR was once again a highlight of the Singapore Keelboat calendar. This was the 4 th time that SMU & RM have come together to organize the event. This has been a highly successful partnership with a combination of the experience and attraction of a world class marina from RM, coupled with the enthusiasm and passion for organization from SMU students. Entries for 13th WCSR The 13 th edition of the regatta saw over 380 participants in 45 boats across 7 categories compete in traditional windward-leeward races as well as in more challenging passage races, the winner of which walked away with the SMU President s Challenge Cup. 2 new classes made their way into WCSR last year with the Moth as well as the Access 2.3 Dinghy Classes contributing to the overall buzz and atmosphere about the event. $20,000 raised for charity The WCSR has become known over the years as a regatta that gives back to society and this year was no different. Through a charity car wash as well as a highly successful charity auction, $20,000 was raised, double the already impressive benchmark set in The money went to Sailability Singapore a not-for-profit organization which enriches the lives of people with disabilities through sailing and was presented to the organization during the gala dinner. Platform for students development The 13 th WCSR continues to serve as a key platform to showcase SMU students holistic education, and encourages students to develop as well-rounded individuals through management of and participation in such a large-scale regatta.
