National Safe Boating Week is May 19-25, We have safe boating information going out to the media and the boating public. Our major project coming up on the 30 th of June for the college Swim around Key West safety boats. We still need more boats and crews. Every boat must have at least one crew on board. Joe Fadlovich is heading up all the boats and crew. Your help will be greatly appreciated for sitting several hours on the water. Please contact Joe to offer your services. Thank you. At our last Sunset Party, we honored Dick Schewe with a plaque for his two years of service as Commander of the Key West Sail & Power Squadron. The new style America s Boating Club name tags were displayed. Bill Gillette wore a normal members tag and I wore one for officer s. The older style name tags with just the Key West burgee and the newer ones with USPS and Key West are all still legal to wear. Any one desiring to order the America s Boating Club name tag should contact Bill Gillette. New Club clothing, shirts etc. have very strict requirements by the branding manual. 4 4 ED UC A TIO N June 2 and 3 is the last weekend class for the America s Boating Course until the fall. New Course material will be used at the first class in the fall. Let your friends know that this is their last class to obtain their Florida State Boater s ID card. All our advanced courses are changing and will have new material by the end of the year. Our current instructors will have to learn the new material and the navigation software entitled OPENCPN which will be the platform to teach all the courses. It will be used extensively in the two new piloting courses. This summer is a great time to become an instructor to assist with the America s Boating Course. You will be learning the new computer programs that will be the foundation of all new courses. During the summer you can become qualified and you can start teaching in the fall. You will help to bring down Monroe Country s ranking which is currently Number 1 in the USA for accidents and deaths. S EO V IN C E M ELEN D Y, A P Every Boat Should Have One! Our Club has a team of vessel safety inspectors ready to examine your boat and help you bring your boat into compliance with Federal and State boating regulations on equipment your boat must have. A pre-departure checklist is available on our website. You should have your boat inspected every year. Safety begins before you leave the dock. Call Bill for an appointment or to join our Vessel Safety Inspectors team. Hurricane Update Chip Kasper from the NOAA Weather Station had a conflict and couldn t attend the May monthly Sunset meeting. He is rescheduled for the June Sunset meeting. After we have eaten, he will be discussing the hurricane forecast for this season. Our Club received Education Fund Award Vol. 62 No.6 A member of D8, United States Power Squadrons

5 5 WATER ACTIVITIES Boating Activities Do you have an idea for a great Club water activity? All you have to do is pick a day when the weather is good for boating and put a call out for other Club members to join you either on your boat or meet you with their boats. We use a Facebook online discussion to organize what is going to happen. If you are a Facebook member, go to our website, click 'Squadron Activities,' and follow the Facebook link. Let s do it!!! Full Moon Raft-Ups As always due to weather actual dates and locations will be announced on our Facebook Group. June 28 July 27 August 26 Come float with us! Father s Day Picnic on June 17th Join us for a relaxing day of swimming and floating. We will be at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park in Key West. Festivities start at 11:00 a.m. and end whenever you choose to leave. Harry Fiala will be there early to save two tables and a grill for our group. The Club will provide charcoal for grilling, paper plates, napkins, and plastic utensils. Attendees should bring their own food and drinks and a dish to share would be nice. Swim Around Key West 2017 Contestant with kayak escort Our squadron is again committed to work the annual college Swim Around Key West. The event is scheduled for June 30, five boats are committed to participate. However, the late date means many of our members have headed north for the summer. I need four more boats to meet our obligation to the college. We also need crew members for the boats. Let me know if you can captain your boat or would like to spend a day on the water as a crew member. Ask a friend that may be willing to help out if you don t have a boat. 6 6 DISTRICT 8 D8 Spring Conference Our Club brought home three awards and members who attended had a great time at the Derby party are available. HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS: If you come by car, accommodations will be at the Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach - a Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. Hotel rates are $ per night. Reservations should be made directly with the hotel at using the group code USP. Once you have made your reservations, please send a check to cover the cost of your hotel nights made out to "District 8" to Mary Wohlstein, 541 Breakwater Terrace, Sebastian, FL Please note your reservation number on the bottom of your check. These fees will then be paid directly to the hotel by D8. A big thank you to Beryn Harty and Phyllis Schewe for the donations for the Silent Auction held at the D8 Spring Conference. Beryn donated two photos of our local birds, nicely framed. Phyllis incorporated a small collection of hanging photos from Beryn along with Keysie items in a basket. Items included Sea Salts, Keys Beez honey, a Mile Marker 24 Band CD and a Keys Guide Book. Both helped bring in some nice monies to defray conferences expenses. D8 Summer Rendezvous July Bahia Mar, Fort Lauderdale Beach Plans are in the works for a Friday night Docktail Welcome Reception for all guests, a Saturday morning Continental Breakfast followed by a short business meeting, and a chili cook off on Saturday night. The Marina offers a large fully equipped Boater's Room which will be D8 Central for the weekend's activities. On property, there is a Rooftop Tiki Bar and swimming pool which all guests are welcome to use. If you chose to wander off the property for lunch or the beach, there is a skywalk at the hotel which connects you directly to the beach where many dining options MARINA GUESTS: Marina reservations should be made directly with Stephanie Fot, The rates are $1.25 per foot/per night (minimum 40 feet) if we have 10 or more boats. If we have less than 10 boats the rate will be $1.50 per foot/per night (minimum 40 feet). There is also a $10 charge for each 30 amp cord and pump outs are available for $1.00 per foot. Stephanie will require a credit card to make your reservation since the dockage will be paid by each Marina Guest and not paid through D8. DAY GUESTS AND OVERNIGHT GUESTS: There is a $10.00 per day per car parking fee. This fee has been taken care of. Just mention that you are with the USPS D8 group. I know it seems like a long way off, but it is closer than you think. This is a great way to mix and mingle with members of other Squadrons in a casual setting and the best part is NO UNIFORMS REQUIRED! 7 7 OTHER CLUB ACTIVITIES Club Receives Awards from District 8 Key West Booster Club Booster Club membership is an additional donation to help BOOST the Key West treasury for special projects needed either inside or outside our club house and to better maintain our appearance in the neighborhood. Therefore, each member or couple donates a minimum of $30.00 yearly as Booster Club membership dues. More may be donated and also may be designated for a specific use. These monies stay in our Local Club and are not shared with District or National. These monies will be used for immediate and special projects at our club house and yard. Our facility is aging (built in 1958?) and needs some extensive repairs like a new air conditioner.
