Chapter 42 Brushing the teeth باب الس و اك ع ل ي ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب يه ع ن اب ن أ ب ي ع م ي ر ع ن إ س ح اق ب ن ع م ار ق ال ق ال أ ب و ع ب د للا عليهم اسسمام اسس و اك. عليه اسسمام م ن أ ما ق ا ن ب ي اء Ali Bin Ibrahim, form his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Is haq Bin Ammar who said, Abu Abdullah asws said: From the mannerisms of the Prophets as is the brushing of teeth. 1 م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ب ن ع يس ى ع ن م ح م د ب ن اس د و اس ح س ي ن ب ن س ع يد ج م يعا ع ن اس ق اس م ب ن ع ر و ة ع ن إ س ح اق ب ن ع م ار ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق ال اسس و اك م ن س ن ن اس م ر س ل ين. A number of our companions, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Ja far Bin Muhammad Al Ashary, from Ibn Al Qaddah, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws having said: Rasool-Allah saww said: Jibraeel as did not cease to advise me saww with brushing of the teeth to the extent that I saww feared being toothless and with thin teeth. 3 و ب ه ذ ا ا ل س ن اد ق ال ق ال أ م ير اس م ؤ م ن ين عليه اسسمام اسس و اك م ط ه ر ة س ل ف م و م ر ض اة س لر ب. 5 Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Muhammad Bin Isa, from Al Hassan Bin Bahr, from Mihzam Al Asady who said, I heard Abu Abdullah asws saying: In brushing of the teeth are ten qualities Cleansing for the mouth, and a Pleasure of the Lord azwj, and a happiness for the Angels, and it is from the Sunnah, and it strengthens the gums, and polishes the vision, and it removes the phlegm, and removes the cavities. 5 ع ن ه ع ن م ح م د ب ن ع يس ى ع ن ع ب ي د للا اسد ه ق ان ع ن د ر س ت ع ن اب ن س ن ان ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق ال ف ي اسس و ا ك اث ن ت ا ع ش ر ص ل ة ه و م ن اسس ن ة و م ط ه ر ة س ل ف م و م ج ما ة س ل ب ص ر و ي ر ض ي اسر ب و ي ذ ه ب ب اس ب ل غ م و ي ز يد ف ي اس ح ف ظ و ي ب ي ض ا س ن ان و ي ض اع ف اس ح س ن ات و ي ذ ه ب ب اس ح ف ر و ي ش د اسل ث ة و ي ش ه ي اسط ع ام و ت ف ر ح ب ه ا س م ما ئ ك ة. From him, from Muhammad Bin Isa, from Ubeydullah Al Dahqan, from Dorost, from Ibn Sinan, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws having said: In brushing of the teeth are twelve qualities It is from the Sunnah, and a cleansing for the mouth, and a polishing for the vision, and a Pleasure of the Lord azwj, and it removes the phlegm, and increases in the memorisation, and it whitens the teeth, and it amplifies the Rewards, and removes the cavities, and strengthens the gums, and it makes one desirous of the food, and the Angels are happy with it. 6 م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن اب ن ف ض ال ع ن ح م اد ب ن ع يس ى ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا ب اسد م ع ة و ي ج ل و اس ب ص ر. عليه اسسمام ق ال اسس و اك ي ذ ه ب Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Fazzal, from Hammad Bin Isa, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws having said: The brushing of teeth removes the tears and polishes the vision. 7 ع ل ي ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب يه ع ن اب ن أ ب ي ع م ي ر ع ن ج م يل ب ن د ر اج ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا صلى للا عليه وآسه أ و ص ان ي ج ب ر ئ يل عليه اسسمام ب اسس و اك ح ت ى ف ت ع ل ى أ س ن ان ي. Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Jameel Bin Darraj, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws having said: Rasool-Allah saww said: Jibraeel as advised me with brushing of the teeth to the extent that I saww feared upon my saww teeth. 8 م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن ع ل ي ب ن اس ح ك م ع ن اس م ر ز ب ان ب ن اسن ع م ان ر ف ع ه ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا صلى للا عليه وآسه م ا س ي أ ر اك م ق ل حا م ا س ك م ل ت س ت اك ون. Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ali Bin Al Hakam, from Al Marzaban Bin Al Noman, raising it, said, Rasool-Allah saww said: What is the matter I saww see you all with yellow teeth? 6 أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن اب ن م ح ب وب ع ن ع م ر و ب ن أ ب ي اس م ق د ام ع ن م ح م د ب ن م ر و ان ع ن أ ب ي ج ع ف ر اسن ب ي صلى للا عليه وآسه م ير اس م ؤ م ن ين صلوات للا عليه ع ل ي ك ب اسس و اك س ك ل ص ما ة. عليه اسسمام ف ي و ص ي ة Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Mahboub, from Amro Bin Abu Al Miqdam, from Muhammad Bin Marwan, (It has been narrated) from Abu Ja far asws regarding a bequest of the Prophet saww to Amir Al-Momineen asws : Upon you asws is with brushing of the teeth during every Prayer. 10 Chapter 43 The Bathhouse باب ال ح م ام ع د ة م ن أ ص ح اب ن ا ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ب ن اس د ع ن أ ب يه أ و غ ي ر ه ع ن م ح م د ب ن أ س ل م اس ج بل ي ر ف ع ه ق ال ق ال أ ب و ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق ال أ م ير اس م ؤ م ن ين صلوات للا عليه ن ع م اس ب ي ت اس ح م ام ي ذ ك ر اسن ار و ي ذ ه ب ب اسد ر ن و ق ال ع م ر ب ئ س اس ب ي ت اس ح م ام ي ب د ي اس ع و ر ة و ي ه ت ك اسس ت ر ق ال و ن س ب اسن اس ق و ل أ م ير اس م ؤ م ن ين عليه اسسمام إ س ى ع م ر و ق و ل ع م ر إ س ى أ م ي ر اس م ؤ م ن ين عليه اسسمام. A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Khalid, from his father, or someone else from Muhammad Bin Aslam Al Jably, raising it, said, Abu Abdullah asws said: Amir Al-Momineen asws said: The best of the houses is the bathhouse. It reminds of the Fire and removes the filth ; and Umar said, The worst of the houses is the bathhouse, it exposes the genitals and the tears down the veil. He asws said: And the people ascribed the words of Amir Al-Momineen asws to Umar and the words of Umar to Amir Al-Momineen asws. 11 ع ن ه ع ن ع ل ي ب ن اس ح ك م و ع ل ي ب ن ح س ان ع ن س ل ي م ان اس ج ع ف ر ي ع ن أ ب ي اس ح س ن عليه اسسمام ق ال اس ح م ام ي و م و ي و م ل ي ك ث ر اسل ح م و إ د م ان ه ف ي ك ل ي و م ي ذ يب ش ح م اس ك ل ي ت ي ن. From him, from Ali Bin Al Hakam and Ali Bin Hassan, from Suleyman Al Ja fary, (It has been narrated) from Abu Al-Hassan asws having said: Bathing a day, and not a day (alternatively) does not increase the flesh, and being habitual of it during every day removes the fat of the kidneys. 12 ع ل ي ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب يه ع ن اب ن أ ب ي ع م ي ر ع ن ر ف اع ة ب ن م وس ى ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا صلى للا عليه وآسه م ن ك ان ي ؤ م ن ب ا لل و اس ي و م ا ل ر ف ما ي د ل اس ح م ام إ ل ب م ئ ز ر. Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Abdullah Bin Muhammad Al Hajjal, from Suleyman Al Ja fary who said, I was sick to the extent that my flesh went away. So I went over to Al-Reza asws, so he asws said: Would you be joyful if I asws were to return your flesh to you? I said, Yes. He asws said: Necessitate the bathing intermittently so it would return back to you your flesh, and beware of being habitual of it, for being habitual in it inherits the tuberculosis. 14 أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن ع ل ي ب ن اس ح ك م ع ن اس م ث ن ى ب ن اس و س يد اس ح ن اط ع ن أ ب ي ب ص ير ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق ال ل ت د ل اس ح م ام إ ل و ف ي ج و ف ك ش ي ء ي ط ف أ ب ه ع ن ك و ه ج اس م ع دة و ه و أ ق و ى س ل ب د ن و ل ت د ل ه و أ ن ت م م ت ل ئ م ن اسط ع ام. Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ali Bin Al Hakam, from Al Musna Bin Al Waleed Al Hannat, from Abu Baseer, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws having said: Do not enter the bathhouse except in your inside is something to cool down the heat of your stomach with, and it is more strengthening for your body, and do not enter it and you are filled up from the food. 15 ع ل ي ب ن اس ح ك م ع ن ر ف اع ة ب ن م وس ى ع م ن أ ب ر ه ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام أ ن ه ك ان إ ذ ا أ ر اد د ول اس ح م ام ت ن او ل ش ي ئا ف أ ك ل ه ق ال ق ل ت س ه إ ن اسن اس ع ن د ن ا ي ق وس ون إ ن ه ع ل ى اسر يق أ ج و د م ا ي ك ون ق ال ل ب ل ي ؤ ك ل ش يء ق ب ل ه ي ط ف ئ اس م ر ار ة و ي س ك ن ح ر ار ة اس ج و ف. Ali Bin Al Hakam, from Rafa at Bin Musa, from the one who informed it, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah asws that whenever he asws wanted to enter the bathhouse, he asws took something, so he asws ate it. I said to him asws, The people with us are saying that it is much better upon the empty stomach as can be. He asws said: No, but eating something before it cools the gallbladder and settles the heat of the interior. 16 ع ل ي ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب يه و م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ع ن م ح م د ب ن إ س م اع يل ب ن ب زي ج م يعا ع ن ح ن ان ب ن س د ي ر ع ن أ ب يه ق ال د ل ت أ ن ا و أ ب ي و ج د ي و ع م ي ح م اما ب اس م د ين ة ف إ ذ ا ر ج ل ف ي ب ي ت اس م س ل خ ف ق ال س ن ا م م ن اس ق و م ف ق ل ن ا م ن أ ه ل ر اس ع ر اق ف ق ال و أ ي اس ع ر اق ق ل ن ا ك وف ي ون ف ق ال م ر ح با ب ك م ي ا أ ه ل اس ك وف ة أ ن ت م اسش ع ار د ون اسد ث ار ث م ق ال م ا ي م ن عك م م ن ا ز ف إ ن ر س ول للا صلى للا عليه وآسه ق ال ع و ر ة اس م ؤ م ن ع ل ى اس م ؤ م ن ح ر ام Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, and Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Muhammad Bin Ismail Bin Bazie, altogether from Hanan Bin sadeyr, from his father who said, I and my father, and my grandfather, and my uncle went over to a bathhouse at Al- Medina, so there was a man asws in the dressing room. So he said to us, From whom are the people? So we said, From the people of Al-Iraq. So he asws said, And from where in Al-Iraq? We said, Kufians (from Kufa). 8 of people of Al-Kufa. You all are wearing clothes and are without a towel. Then he asws said, What is preventing you from the loincloth, for Rasool-Allah saww said: The nakedness of the Believer upon the Believer is Prohibited. ق ال ف ب ع ث إ س ى أ ب ي ك ر ب اس ة ف ش ق ه ا ب أ ر ب ع ة ث م أ ذ ك ل و اح د م ن ا و اح دا ث م د ل ن ا ف يه ا ف ل م ا ك ن ا ف ي اس ب يت اس ح ار ص م د س ج د ي ف ق ا ل ي ا ك ه ل م ا ي م ن ع ك م ن اس ض اب ف ق ال س ه ج د ي أ د ر ك ت م ن ه و ي ر م ن ي و م ن ك ل ي ت ض ب ق ال ف غ ض ب س ذ س ك ح ت ى ع ر ف ن ا غ ض ب ه ف ي اس ح م ام ق ال و م ن ذ س ك اس ذ ي ه و ي ر م ن ي ف ق ال أ د ر ك ت ع ل ي ب ن أ ب ي ط اس ب عليه اسسمام و ه و ل ي ت ض ب ق ا ل ف ن ك س ر أ س ه و ت ص اب ع ر قا ف ق ال ص د ق ت و ب ر ر ت He (the narrator) said, He asws sent a cloth to my father, so he tore it into four pieces, and each one of us took one from it. Then we entered into it. So when we were in the hot house, he asws turned towards my grandfather, so he asws said, O elderly, what prevents you from the dyeing? So my grandfather said to him, I was with someone who was better than me and you asws, who did not dye. So he asws got so angered due to that to the extent that we recognised his asws anger in the bathhouse. He asws said, And who is that who is better than me asws? So he said, I was with Ali asws Bin Abu Talib asws and he asws did not dye. He (the narrator) said, So he asws bowed his head and perspired, so he asws said, You speak the truth, and are justified. ث م ق ال ي ا ك ه ل إ ن ت ت ض ب ف إ ن ر س ول للا صلى للا عليه وآسه ق د ض ب و ه و ي ر م ن ع ل ي عليه اسسمام و إ ن ت ت ر ك ف ل ك ب ع ل ي س ن ة ق ال ف ل م ا ر ج ن ا م ن اس ح م ام س أ س ن ا ع ن اسر ج ل ف إ ذ ا ه و ع ل ي ب ن اس ح س ي ن عليه اسسمام و م ع ه اب ن ه م ح م د ب ن ع ل ي عليه اسسمام. Then he said, O elderly, you should dye, for Rasool-Allah saww had dyed, and he saww was better than Ali asws, and if you leave it, so for you is a Sunnah with Ali asws. So when we went out from the bathhouse, we asked about the man, so it was Ali asws Bin Al-Husayn asws and with him asws was his asws son asws Muhammad asws Bin Ali asws. 17 م ح م د ب ن ي ح ي ى ع ن أ ح م د ب ن م ح م د ب ن ع يس ى ع ن ع ل ي ب ن اس ح ك م ع ن ع ل ي ب ن أ ب ي ح م ز ة ق ال د ل ت م أ ب ي ب ص ير اس ح ما م ف ن ظ ر ت إ س ى أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق د اط ل ى و اط ل ى إ ب ط ي ه ب اسن ور ة ق ال ف ب ر ت أ ب ا ب ص ير ف ق ال أ ر ش د ن ي إ س ي ه س أ س ه ع ن ه ف ق ل ت ق د ر أ ي ت ه أ ن ا ف ق ال أ ن ت ق د ر أ ي ت ه و أ ن ا س م أ ر ه أ ر ش د ن ي إ س ي ه ق ال ف أ ر ش د ت ه إ س ي ه ف ق ال س ه ج ع ل ت ف د اك أ ب ر ن ي ق ائ د ي أ ن ك ب ط ي ن ي ض ع ف اس ب ص ر اط ل ي ا أ ب ا م ح م د ق ال ف ق ال اط ل ي ت ق د اط ل ي ت و ط ل ي ت إ ب ط ي ك ب اسن ور ة ق ال ن ع م ي ا أ ب ا م ح م د إ ن ن ت ف ا ل م ن ذ أ ي ام ف ق ال اط ل ف إ ن ه ط ه ور. Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Ali Bin Al Hakam, from Ali Bin Abu Hamza who said, I entered the bathhouse along with Abu Baseer, so we looked at Abu Abdullah asws had waxed, and he asws had waxed his asws underarms with Al-Noura. So I informed Abu Baseer, so he said, Guide me to him asws to ask him asws about it. So I said, I have seen him asws. So he said, You have seen him asws, and I cannot see him asws, (as he was blind). Guide me to him asws. So I guided him to him asws, so he said to him asws, May I be sacrificed for you asws! My guide informed me that you asws have waxed, and waxed your asws underarms with Al-Noura. He asws said: Yes, O Abu Muhammad! Plucking the underarms weakens the vision. Wax, O Abu Muhammad. So he said, I have waxed a few days beforehand. Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ali Bin Al Hakam, (It has been narrated) from a man from the Clan of Hashim as who said, I went over to a group from the Clan of Hashim as, so I greeted them in a dark room. So one of them said, Greet Abu Al Hassan asws, for he asws is in the centre. So I greeted him asws and sat in front of him asws, and I said to him asws, I desired to meet you asws for a while to ask you asws about certain things. So he asws said: Ask, whatever comes to you. I said, What are you asws saying regarding the bathhouse. I said, They (people) are alleging that it is an extravagance. So he asws said: There is no extravagance in the correction (well-being) of the body. Sometimes I order with the pure (flour), so it is mixed for me asws with the oil, so I massage with it. So he asws said: There is no problem. But rather, the spoiling is in what is harmful for the body, and the destruction of the wealth. So as for what is corrective for the body, so it is no with spoiling. 11 Abu Abdullah asws went out from the bathhouse, so he asws had worn clothes and a turban. He asws said to me: Whenever you come out from the bathhouse, so wear a turban. So when we went out, we met Abu Abdullah asws, so he asws said to us: Where are you coming back from? So we said to him asws, From the bathhouse. So he asws said: May Allah azwj Purify your bathing. So we said to him asws, May we be sacrificed for you asws. And we went with him asws until he asws entered the bathhouse. So we sat around (waiting) for him asws until he asws came out. So we said to him asws, May Allah azwj Purify your asws bathing. 12 Al-Hassan asws Bin Ali asws went out from the bathhouse, a person came across him asws, so he said, May your asws Istihmamuk be good. So he asws said: O dimwit, and are you doing with utilising the ist over here (in the word)? So he said, May your Hameemuk be good. So he asws said: But do you not know that Al-Hameem is the perspiration? He said, May your Hamaamuk be good. Then he asws ordered the one in charge of the bathhouse, so he asws anointed what was outside from the trouser. Then he asws said: go away from me asws. Then he asws anointed what was underneath it by his asws own hands, then said: This is how, so do it. 31 Sahl, raising it, said, س ه ل ر ف ع ه ق ال ق ال أ ب و ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ل ي د ل اسر ج ل م اب ن ه اس ح م ام ف ي ن ظ ر إ س ى ع و ر ت ه. So as for the back, it is veiled by the two buttocks. So when the manhood and the two organs (under it) are veiled, so the private parts have been veiled. و ق ال ف ي ر و اي ة أ ر ى و أ م ا اسد ب ر ف ق د س ت ر ت ه ا س ي ت ان و أ م ا اس ق ب ل ف اس ت ر ه ب ي د ك. Ali Bin Ibrahim, form his father, from Hammad Bin Isa, from Rabi e Bin Abdullah, from Muhammad Bin Muslim who said, I asked Abu Ja far asws, Was Amir Al-Momineen asws forbidding from reciting the Quran in the bathhouse? He asws said: No, but rather he asws had forbidden that the man should be reciting whilst he is naked. And he asws said: Rasool-Allah saww cursed the onlooker and the one looked at in the bathhouse, without a trouser. 44 اس ح س ي ن ب ن م ح م د ع ن أ ح م د ب ن إ س ح اق ع ن س ع د ان ع ن أ ب ي ب ص ير ق ال د ل أ ب و ع ب د للا ص اح ب اس ح م ام أ ل يه س ك ف ق ال ل ح اج ة س ي ف ي ذ س ك اس م ؤ م ن أ ف م ن ذ س ك. عليه اسسمام اس ح م ام ف ق ال س ه Al Husayn Bin Muhammad, from Ahmad Bin Is haq, form sa adan, from Abu Baseer who said, Abu Abdullah asws entered the bathhouse, so the one in charge of the bathhouse said to him, I shall empty it for you asws. Muhammad Bin Ali (the narrator) said, So I said to Abu Al-Hassan asws that the people of Al-Medina are saying that there is a healing in it from the (evil) eyes. So he asws said: They are lying! There bathe in it the ones who have sexual impurities from the Prohibition (adultery), and the adulterer, and the Hostile one (Nasibi) who is the most evil of them, and every creature from the creatures of Allah azwj, then there would be a healing in it? But rather, a healing from the (evil) eye is recitation of Al- Hamd (Chapter 1), and Al-Mawazatayn (Chapter 113 & 114), and the Verse of the Chair (2:255), and the vapour of the incense with Al-Qust (saussurea), and Al-Murr (myrhh), and Al-Loban (frankincense). 46 Chapter 44 Washing the head باب غ س ل الر أ س ع ل ي ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب يه ع ن اب ن أ ب ي ع م ي ر ع ن س ف ي ان ب ن اسس م ط ع ن أ ب ي ع ب د للا عليه اسسمام ق ال ت ق ل يم ا ار ظ ف و ا ذ م ن اسش ار ب و غ س ل اسر أ س ب اس ط م ي ي ن ف ي اس ف ق ر و ي ز يد ف ي اسر ز ق. 18 appeared, he saww saw the scarcity of the Muslims and abundance of the Polytheists. So Rasool-Allah saww was aggrieved by an intense grief. So Allah azwj Sent Jibraeel as to him saww with a lotus from the Lotus Tree (Al-Sidrat Al-Muntaha). So he saww washed his saww head with it, and his saww grief was removed by it. 53 Chapter 45 Al Noura (The lime paste) باب الن ور ة ع ل ي ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب يه ع ن اب ن أ ب ي ع م ي ر ع ن س ل ي م اس ف ر اء ق ال ق ال أ م ير اس م ؤ م ن ين عليه اسسمام اسن ور ة ط ه ور. Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, form Al Hajjal, from Hammad Bin Usman, (It has been narrated) from Abdul Rahman Bin Abu Abdullah asws having said: I entered the bathhouse along with Abu Abdullah asws, so he asws said to me: O Abdul Rahman! Get waxing done. So I said, But rather I waxed a few days ago. Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Fazzal, from Ali Bin Uqba, from Abu Kahmas, from Muhammad Bin Abdullah Bin Ali Bin Al Husayn who said, Abu Abdullah asws entered the bathhouse and I wanted to exit from it. So he asws said: O Muhammad! Did you not get waxing done? So I said, I did apply with it a few days ago. Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from one of his companions, from Ali Bin Abu Hamza, from Abu Baseer who said, I (Abu Hamza) was with him (Abu Baseer) guiding him (as he was blind), so I entered the bathhouse, and I saw Abu Abdullah asws applying Noura. So Abu Baseer went near him and greeted him asws, so he asws said: O Abu Baseer! Apply Noura. So he said, But rather, I had applied Noura first thing yesterday, and the third day. So he asws said: But do you not know that is it a cleanser?
