DALGETY BAY SAILING CLUB M A I N S H E E T October 2010 Photo Of The Month: Taken By Ian Key Commodores Message By Andy Marshall As I near the end of my two years as Commodore I look back to reflect over the great things which have been achieved by you, the membership. Lets remember that we only employ bar staff and cleaners, everything else is done by you on a voluntary basis. So, it is to your credit by helping out and / or supporting club events that we have continued to be as successful this year, as we have in the past. In order to generate funds, crucial to continuing such successes, we need to focus on membership income, club activity and additional events. There is lots on offer for the single member and the entire family of all ages. It is particularly rewarding to see the faces of our junior members light up as they engage in the activities and absorb the friendly atmosphere which is so important for our clubs future generation. For me, giving back to the club I have been a member of for the last 23 years has been both rewarding and challenging. I remain proud to be a member of DBSC and hope that many of you may be thinking that this year could be your opportunity to give back too! Thank you to everyone who continues to volunteer for the good of the club. Happy Sailing for the rest of the season. 1

AGM 2010 Wednesday 17 November By Andy Marshall As accepted last year and in accordance with the club constitution, notification by / website constitutes in writing thus to continue to save club funds all AGM documentation will be posted on the website and NOT posted by royal mail unless specifically requested. On 20 Oct I will circulate the general business of the AGM along with a list of officer vacancies.membership Proposals for the Agenda must be received by 27th October. The Final Agenda / Document R e l e a s e w i l l b e o n 3 r d NovemberProposals for Officer Elections must be received no later than 1930 on 16th November. DBSC Press Release By David Burnett (Former Commodore) My name is David Burnett and I am the spokesperson for Dalgety Bay Sailing Club with regard to the contamination issue. I was Commodore of the club at the time of the formation of the Dalgety Bay Forum, and have continued my involvement in the forum since that time. The Sailing Club has welcomed the involvement of all parties to the forum, and has hosted the surveying staff during their visits over the past few years. The Sailing Club takes the position that whilst acknowledging the contamination and working with all parties to see it permanently removed, straightforward common sense and hygiene precautions will mitigate risks from possible exposure to any radioactive particles. Notices explaining the situation are posted around the club grounds and inside the club and we encourage members and visitors to take cognisance of them. The Sailing club is very much, open for business. It is important to note that the surveys clear the material from the affected area as it is discovered, l e a v i n g t h e f o r e s h o r e a n d s u r ro u n d i n g a r e a s c l e a r o f contamination. Though recent surveys have been extremely thorough and much progress made towards identifying potential sources of the continuing repopulation, surveys following the winter storms in 2010 showed some evidence of repopulation, albeit on a reduced scale. This was discussed at length during the most recent forum meeting, resulting in the recommendation for further survey work to be carried out. The scientists, (SEPA's and MOD's) are currently working to produce a detailed risk assessment and we look forward to reviewing it when it is available. The Sailing Club appreciates that One of the best things about Dalgety Bay Sailing Club is the fantastic views you get of the islands and the bridges Visitor the science involved in this matter is complicated, made more so by the tidal nature of the area and instability of some of the reclaimed land that the club is built upon. We must therefore rely on the scientists in the forum to indicate the nature of hazard. Practical solutions to breaking the exposure pathways, thereby removing the threat to public health, are naturally of interest to the club, and given the wide and varied trades and professions within the membership, are an area where we feel we may be able to add value. We have therefore agreed to help inform the debate by using the clubs many contacts to investigate possible solutions and try to come up with some options that may move us closer to a contamination-free area. This will be done over the coming months, ready to present when the forum next meets. Kind regards, David Burnett, past Commodore, Dalgety Bay Sailing Club. 2

Scottish Champion Of Champions 16th/17th October 2010 By Peter Taylor The RYA Scotland Champion of Champions regatta, sponsored by Insurance4Dinghies.com is being hosted by Dalgety Bay Sailing club in In order to take part you will have received an invitation for being a winner of Scottish Championships and Scottish Travellers series in each class, and is raced on a handicap basis in competitors own boats. Great to hear that DBSC members have won and will be representing both their class and our club. Briefing Saturday 11:00 First Starts Saturday 12:30 Sunday 10:30 Interested to learn some new skills and watch the pro s in action? Help is always required Please volunteer using the sign-up sheets in the clubhouse, or by contacting Peter Taylor (peter@wavelets.co.uk) Special Saturday - Novice Race 9th October 2010 The next special Saturday will be held at the club on Saturday 9th October. Following on from the success of the regatta, this will be the next chance for our club novices to try their hand again at racing; alternatively, if you re more experienced then why not bring along a friend you ve always said you d take for a sail sometime, or crew with your off-spring at the helm (if your nerves will stand it!). This time the format will be more similar to the Sunday racing series as it will involve two afternoon races (and be free to enter!). However, like the novice regatta there should be a coach on the water to give you some tips. The emphasis of the races will be relaxed and fun. They will involve sailing around a short course close to the shore. The racing will start at 2pm so you'll need to turn up about 1 hour before this to: - rig your boat - check the course - register for the race - get changed into your sailing kit - attend a briefing at 1:30pm to find out where you re sailing and any rules - launch your boat, beach your trolley and get to the start line! If you don't have your own boat, then why not use one of the club boats? The club has: Picos, Toppers, Optimists and for the more experienced there are still two Laser Stratoses (or Strata, I believe, for those who prefer the classical plural) and a brand spanking new Bahia. If you want to use one of the club boats you'll need to: be a club member book boats through Stewart Moss (rearcommodoretraining@dalgetybaysc.org) If you're interested in finding out more about this event or would like to assist in any way then contact Ben Geyer (benandjustine@tiscali.co.uk or ). QM2 Visit October 2009 Its been a whole year since the QM2 came to visit the Forth. How time flies! 3

Use Of Club Assets By Stewart Moss There has been much discussion at Committee meetings relating to how we understand the usage of assets like Rescue Boats, Training Boats, Tractor etc and therefore the cost that is associated to the usage of that asset. To put you in the picture and to use the club rescue fleet as an example we spend on average 4,000 on fleet maintenance a year and an average annual depreciation allowance for the fleet rescue boats & engines of 6000 plus approx 1,500 on fuel. It is important that we understand how that cost of 11,500 benefits the club over the year. I am sure that many of our membership are not aware of the amount of usage the rescue fleet endures and even the management committee was almost 50% out on its estimate prior to compiling a study. It is also important to note that the rescue fleet for racing and regattas etc is generally manned by volunteers who although owning a Level 2 Powerboat certificate, may have had up to 12 months between performing rescue duties, so the lack of practise means equipment damage is always a possibility. The chart below lists all the events throughout the year that requires the use of rescue cover, as you can see over the course of a year the fleet could have nearly 1200 hours usage. If we take the costs indicated above ( 4,000 maintenance + 6,000 depreciation + 1,500 fuel) and divide it by the usage hours we arrive at an hourly cost to the club for the fleet of 9.80 per hour or 1.60 per hour per RIB. It is worth noting that the usage cannot be easily divided between the 6 boats in the fleet as conditions do not always allow for the deployment of T5 & T6 (Tiller steered, small engine), so the lions share of usage will probably fall between T1 to T4. It is also worth noting that although we do charge for events like Youth Week and Regattas we have tended to concentrate only on visible costs as items like wear and tear on the rescue boats (and training boat fleet) has been largely unquantifiable. Rescue Boat Usage Series Dinghy racing Races or Days Usage Hrs per race No of boats on water Total hrs Early Bird Pursuit Sun Warm up Wed First Wed Second Sun Summer Sun Autumn Sat Winter Total 308 Combined Racing Round Inchcolm Round St Davids Round Rocks Two Bridges Total 24 Training Tuesday Night Youth Week Training days Level 2 Training Total 498 Events Special Sat Dinghy Regattas Keel boat Regattas Occasional use Total 342 Total 1172 Whilst far from perfect and open to debate, this does allow us to get a better idea of the cost of our asset usage and will benefit us when budgeting for chargeable events such as Youth Week and Dinghy Regattas. 4

There is such a large selection of events happening around the club, there is always something for everyone. Should you find there s not, someone is always ready to listen to your ideas. It s great. Halloween Disco By Sharon Moss Its that time of year again! After the huge success of our last Halloween Disco, we have decided to throw another one! Held on Saturday 30th Of October starting at 2:30 pm in the clubhouse we have something for everyone including a Pumpkin Carving Competition. Tickets are only 3 each and are in high demand so buy one quickly by contacting me (rearcommodoresocial@dalgetybaysc.org) Events At DBSC Quiz Night Thursday 21st October Prize Giving By Charlie Stobart Come and support your club at the next monthly DBSC Quiz Night. Hosted by Quizmaster Lionel Booth There is a limit of 5 people per team and there is an entry fee of 1 per person. By Fraser Harrison The annual prize giving will be held on the 20th of November.
