Locate Rudder Tubing (Q) and spray end with lubricant (pledge). Insert into the stern deck grommet on the low side of the kayak until you can see it through the rod pod hatch. Guide tubing through grommet in footbrace area and trim to one inch past grommet. Repeat to ther side. Unwind and straighten steering cable on foot pedal assemblies. Feed cable through tubing so all of the excess is out the stern. Adjust the pedal on the track so the strap loop is centered over the rear mounting screw with slight tension on bungee. Repeat to other side. Put a X 5/8 PH Phil Bolt (R) into each of the outer screw holes on the wing of the rudder body. Cut the Black Shrink Tube (S) in half and put one piece on the end of the steering cable, followed by two Copper Crimps (T). Feed cable back into the other side of the crimps creating a loop and tighten around the bolt. Make sure rudder is secure in catcher with slight tension on cable. Using crimpers/pliers, crimp the two crimps into place. Using wire cutters, cut the loose cable end at the crimp. Repeat to the other side. Remove the cable loop from the bolt on the side of the wing. Assure that the shrink tube is over the crimps and heat the shrink tube until it shrinks and molds over the crimp with a lighter or torch. Do not overheat! Do not allow flame to contact shrink tube. CAUTION: Overheating will damage shrink tube. Repeat to the other side. U Nylock Nut V Univ. Rudder Lines Kit Rear Deck Fitting Put one #10 Flat Washer (N) onto bolt in wing. Place cable loop back onto bolt. Add another #10 Flat Washer (N) and a Nylock Nut (U), and tighten using a 3/8 wrench and a screwdriver. Do not over-tighten. Cables should swing side-to-side freely. Stop when the screw is flush with the nut. Repeat to the other side. Trident 15 Only: Insert the retraction line from the Universal Rudder Lines Kit (V) through the line guide pad eye on stern deck. The rear deck line on the left side of the boat must be removed by cutting it with scissors. The deck fitting that was used to hold the line to the boat will now be used as a line guide. Insert the Rudder Retraction line ifrom the Universal Rudder Lines Kit (V) nto the now empty bottom half of the rear deck fitting. Trident 11, Only: Insert the rudder retraction line from the Universal Rudder Lines Kit (V), through the middle left hole of the rudder catcher. Page 4 of 8 10/04/2013 Or.
5 Ref Part Part # Qty V Univ. Rudder Lines Kit Feed half of the retraction line over the roller guide on the rudder body. Keep the retraction line to the left side of the rudder blade. Bring it up and around the gray cam (on the rudder blade). Thread the retraction line through the holes on the top of the rudder blade. Starting on the left hand side, while the blade is facing up insert the retraction line from left to right through the middle hole. Then insert the line from right to left through the bottom hole. Then insert the line a final time from left to right through the top hole. Thread the retraction line back under the roller guide. Thread the line through the right middle hole of the rudder catcher. Thread the retraction line back under the roller guide. Thread the line into the top half of the rear deck fitting (RDF) used earlier. Knot #2 Knot #1 Trident 15 Only: Insert the retraction line back through the line guide pad eye. There will be two knots that will hold the bungee from the Universal Rudder Lines Kit (V) and retraction line together: one on the top retraction line (knot #2) and one on the bottom (knot #1). Each knot is made up of two knots which are side-by-side. With rudder blade in the down position, begin first knot by taking the bungee and looping it over the bottom retraction line two times, from left to right. Next (See inset pic) take the bungee and insert it through the loops, from left to right. Then take the right loop and place over the top of the left loop and tighten. The first half of knot #1 is finished. Slide the knot along the retraction line until it is about one inch in front of the clam cleat. Working to the left of the previous knot, begin the second half of knot #1 by taking the retraction line and looping it over the bungee two times, from right to left. Then take retraction line and insert it through the loops from right to left. Take the left loop and place it over the top of the right loop and tighten. Slide knot over so it is snug to the previous knot. Pull long ends of line and bungee to tighten. Take the bungee and insert it through the bottom of the pad eye, up through the top. Page 5 of 8 10/04/2013 Or.
6 Move the rudder blade to the up position. Take the bungee that has passed through the pad eye back to the clam cleat and begin the second knot (follow the same procedure as the previous knots). Using wire cutters, cut the excess retraction line and bungee about one inch from each knot. Heat the frayed ends with a torch or a lighter. The retraction line must be inserted into the line guide Pad Eye before the Rudder body. Feed half of the retraction line over the roller guide on the rudder body. Then insert the line a final time from left to right through the top hole and then under the roller. Retract Deploy Thread the retraction line back through the line guide. There will be two knots that will hold the bungee and the retraction line together: one on the retraction line and one on the deploy line. Each knot is made up of two knots which are positioned side-by-side. With rudder blade in up position, begin first knot by taking retraction line and looping it over the bungee line two times from left to right. Take the rope and pass it through the loops from left to right and tighten. The knot should be 1 from the clam cleat. Working to the left of the previous knot, begin the second half of knot #1 by looping the bungee over the retraction line two times from right to left. Take then bungee and pass it through the loops from right to left and tighten. Slide this knot over so it is snug up to the previous knot. Pull long ends of retraction line and bungee to tighten. Page 6 of 8 10/04/2013 Or.
7 Take the other end of the bungee and pass it through the strap eye from the top. Move the rudder to the down position. Take the deploy line and tie the same knot as before about 1 from the clam cleat around the bungee. Pull the other end of the bungee to apply tension. Keeping the tension, tie the free end of the bungee around the deploy line as before. Pull the knots together. Using wire cutters, cut the excess retraction line and bungee about one inch from each knot. Heat the frayed ends with a torch or a lighter. Page 7 of 8 10/04/2013 Or.
