1 Lake Charles Yacht Club The Tacking Times Newsletter MAY 2014 THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE LAKE CHARLES YACHT CLUB Commodore s Corner Welcome to all our new members. It is great to see them and others enjoying our club and joining in our races and other events. Congratulations to the Richards on holding a great Contraband Regatta, and thanks to all the others who helped run the races and feed all the hungry sailors. The work on the boat ramp and L-pier is done. This completes our planned dock work for this year. Jimmy Berry is working on plans to improve our club building. One of the improvements, suggested by our members to get an ice machine was approved at our last board meeting. We hope to have it installed soon. At the last business meeting, the updated bylaws were approved. Also, the new storage class of board storage was approved. We welcome those who want to bring their small craft. At our next business meeting, we want to vote on a provision to allow participants who complete our sailing class to join our club at a reduced fee. We want to encourage more people to join, especially those who have shown the interest to complete the lessons. Thanks to those who have provided suggestions for making our club better. Bring more good ideas for the board to work on. I wish fair winds and full sails to all. The membership passed the: LCYC By Laws & Rules and Agreement Canoe / Windsurf / Paddle Board / Kayak Storage $10 / Quarter The board is now pursuing a rental Ice Machine for LCYC grounds GPS and Boat Safety Classes Offered The LC Sail and Power Squadron is offering a class on GPS, global positioning systems, as they apply to the boating community. It will be on JUNE-5 th at 6pm at their Anchorage clubhouse, located just past the I210 boat launch. The road will be open to those attending any of the classes they offer. There will be a public Safe Boating Class at the Anchorage on Saturday JUNE 14 th from 8-3. Please call Ship to Shore at for more information on any of the classes offered to the public by the LC Sail and power Squadron. Sailing Lessons June 9 13 Sailing Lessons instructed by the Juniors will be offered June 9th 13th. Contact Ship to Shore for more details. Boat Launch Replacement Completed Thanks for Guy Richards for coordinating the repair of the Boat Launch piers.

10 THE TACKING TIMES NEWSLETTER Page 10 Cozumel Richard and Anne Doss In Cozumel, an excursion available is a race between 12 meter Americas Cup sailboats. Anne and I sailed on Stars and Stripes, which won the Americas Cup in 1987 over Australia. On the excursion, we raced against True North, a Canadian 12 meter ship and won. After the race, I got to steer the boat back to the mooring. Can contact Eric at $1, O Day 322 good condition, central a/c, lots of extras, $20K Mike Dronet Hunter 30, good condition, central a/c $20K Charlie Williams Catalina 22 sailboat with trailer and hp Nissan ASKING $7900 Clean, in great shape, ready to sail Call Sheron at Ship to Shore Ken Abrams has 3 motors for sale, 7 hp Sears (Eska), 2 hp Honda and 3.5 hp Mercury. All were used on sailboats. All have tanks as part of the motor. 7 hp Sears: This is an older Sears motor. It is air cooled and is standard shaft length. It has a neutral clutch. (F and N) It is rough looking but runs fine. Two cycle. $300. The vent screw is messed up and doesn t seal very well. 2 hp Honda: This is an air cooled, 4 cycle, long shaft, and twist grip throttle motor with idle clutch. Rotate for reverse. This is a sweet little motor but I have a love/hate relationship with it. The fuel ports must be very tiny and clog up occasionally and must be sent to the shop for carburetor cleaning. Right now the motor runs but the choke must be on for the motor to run properly. Someone familiar with carb cleaning can probably take care of it. $ ½ hp Mercury: I bought this motor to use on my Mariner 19 to replace the Honda. I then sold the Mariner but the buyer didn t need a motor. This motor is long shaft, 4 cycle, twist grip throttle, F/N, rotate for reverse motor. It is practically unused. $900.

Page 11 At the next social / membership meeting (June 14th) we will vote on a proposal that would allow those that complete sailing lessons and wish to join LCYC a reduced initiation fee. The proposal is to have a $100 initiation fee versus $300 that can be prorated with quarterly dues. Based on the vote at the last membership meeting, the board is pursuing the installation of a rental ice machine to be used by club members. The board is pursuing estimates for the replacement of the wood deck on the 2nd floor of the clubhouse. The board member phone numbers are listed by the LCYC phone at the club house. Board Meetings are normally at the Club House on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm Race to Prien Regatta May 24th Hope to see you on Saturday for the Race to Prien Regatta... Please Remember Lock the gate when you leave. Please clean the clubhouse after use Please do not leave the air conditioners running. If you took it out (boats, gear, sails, silverware, whatever), put it back. Pick up your trash and dispose of it in the garbage cans or the dumpster. For extra credit, you can pick up someone else s trash they left out If something on a club boat breaks, report it to a member of the Board or Ship to Shore so that repairs can be made
