4 Commodore Charles Barclay Aloha Members, January brings a new year, new officers, and the prologue to a new yachting season. Our Keiki Fishing tournament is at hand this month and so is a Saturday informal regatta. Both are warm-ups for the season which kicks off officially in February. Of course it is playoff season for football and the bar will be active with fans who on Saturdays can catch lunch with our below galley run by members and topside for Sunday Brunch at the Galley by the Sea. I want to mention four people this month for their contribution to the Hawaii Yacht Club. First, Barbara Silvey has been a long time contributor for Special Events, running the various events for many years. Her business has changed direction and last fall she informed us she could no longer run special events. Luckily for Hawaii Yacht Club some members stepped up and filled the role with good will and aplomb. We will miss Barbara s efforts and know shestill has much aloha for the Club. Secondly, Antje Gruenewald and Ron Uryga have spearheaded the return of Saturday lunches at the Club. They have sold out several Saturday s and if you come to the club New Year s day, you should be able to buy lunch and watch your bowl game. Finally, Commodore Sterling Lau, through substantial personal sacrifice held the Club together during a very difficult year. He never thought of packing it in despite the difficulties. He is a tenacious and likable man. Thank you, Commodore Lau. When you see these fine volunteers, good people all, please do me a favor and thank them personally for all their efforts will be a year of challenges and promise. It will be a year of volunteerism, growing membership, and change. I want your help to volunteer for committees and events, or want to see something changed or give advice, please contact me or one of the Flag Officers. As Vice Commodore Pestel promised, we ll get it done. We will have a number of committees this year, per the By-laws we are committed to having Finance, Bar, Galley, House & Grounds, and Planning committees. In addition, we will also have at least the following committees: membership committee, mooring, marketing, web presence, welcoming, Bylaws, entertainment, and Transpac. Look for committee chairs being named in January and signup sheets. Most members have an idea of what s wrong and how we can improve the Club. I ve found that generally, a bunch of things wrong are really symptoms of the bigger problem or the root cause. Just like when you get the Flu you don t get all the symptoms at once: headache, fever, bodyaches, and nausea develop over a day or two. Our problems didn t occur overnight. It will take some time but there are straightforward solutions and you will see progress before summer. As I write this on Christmas Eve, I just learned of the passing of one of our members. A reminder that life is short, no time to waste. Contact me at kbh.harbormaster@gmail.com or (808) with ideas, concerns or questions. Charles Barclay Commodore HYC 4

5 Vice Commodore Ron Pestel Aloha From Santa Santa is reporting for the Vice Commodore this month. Santa is pleased to report that December was very busy and a happy time around HYC. The Monday night BBQ s were full, with folks cooking and with many guests. Thanks to RC Power Robbie Santanello, we were honored to have a group of off island U.S. Marines. They asked me if they could come back and enjoy HYC and take photos before they leave in January. Folks, this validates what a potential gold mine we have at HYC. What an easy sell. We all just bring in guests and the club can sell itself. NormaJean Cavell had her Sweet 16 Birthday Party, which Michelle Hansen organized. They were having a fun Monday at HYC. Again, Monday BBQ is a very popular and well supported. Wouldn t it be nice if the club was as busy every night as it is on Monday? We all can make that happen. If each HYC Member just came to the club once a week and brought a friend to enjoy dinner and / or liquid libations. Members were busy having their December Holiday parties up Top and down below. We even had a wonderful Keiki 1st Birthday Party with well over 100 attendees. These are young family folks which we want to attract to become members. The Cruising Society and Wine Tasting (May we call it, The Wine Tasting Society?) Both have been well attended and popular. It is good to have the club busy with folks enjoying themselves and bringing in guests. HYC is open for creating other Societies. QUESTION: Would you shop a store or dine in a restaurant that had few customers or that was not bustling with patrons? Our goal is to keep the club busy with customers. The bottom line is, whatever we do, we want to make money. That may take some lost leaders or out of the box ideas / events to bring in more customers to build sales volume. HYC asks for your support. 16TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE THANK YOU, Barb Mednick and NormJean Cavell for taking charge and making it happen on short notice. It was no small task! Aloha Tower Marketplace said it was wonderfully done and the beautiful Yachts were enjoyed by the crowd on shore. It was said, they want to support more HYC Events. THANK YOU, Michelle Hansen for taking charge and decorating the club for the Christmas Holidays! ARGENTINE TANGO & SALSA NIGHT JANUARY 8 SATURDAY!!! You all come, and enjoy the music, our guest dancers and have a few libations to loosen up that Latin blood in you, making it easier to learn to tango or salsa. A NEW Experience at Hawaii Yacht Club. LIVE LATIN MUSIC with Son Caribe playing. Chef Alfredo will prepare Argentine Cuisine Specials. FOR YOUR PLANNING: Commodore / Volunteer Appreciation Party Saturday January 22.Time 4 pm-6-pm lower deck or until it ends. Then Party-On in the Upper Deck Lounge with Live Music. Annual Junior Fishing Tournament January 29. Santa forron Pestel Vice Commodore HYC 5

6 R.C. Sail Joseph Shacat Below_Lahaina Return. Aloha Sailors, The 2010 racing season went out with a bang. In November, we had a very successful Wahine Regatta, with 11 boats on the line and strong winds. There was some great racing and challenging conditions. Congratulations to first place winners Gerontius (Class A) skippered by Leslie Foster, Ikaika (Class B) skippered by Ailana Warren and Tiffini Lopez, and Mel Temi (Cruising Class) skippered by Beth Malvestiti. Special thanks to WYC for helping out with race committee and using Ilima as a committee boat. The awards banquet in December was a blast. There were some excellent take-home trophies and the food was delicious. For the first time in many years, the Whiner s Trophy was not awarded. This is a testament to the Corinthian spirit of sailboat racing and the level of sportsmanship in our fleet. quarterly basis. This will give an opportunity for boats that miss a few weeks due to repairs, travel, or other reasons to still win a series. We will also do a slight adjustment on start times for a few boats in order to better reflect PHRF ratings. A revised Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions should be available by the end of December. We are always looking for volunteers to help out with the racing program. We can use help with race committee, organizing prizes and sponsorship for regattas, food for after-race parties, and of course committee boats. If you have any suggestions or would like to help out, please send me an at hyc.racecommittee@ gmail.com 6 The new year is upon us, and with that a few changes to the racing program. The biggest new event is the Winter Beer Can Bash, scheduled for Saturday, January 22. This will be a fun race in the late afternoon (first start will be at 1500 hrs). The format will be similar to a Friday night, but twice as long (we ll go to DH and HH), and we ll have fleet starts for A, B and Non-Spinnaker classes. Multihulls are welcome to come out and play too. In order to promote safe sailing for the rest of the season, this race will also include a mandatory MOB drill. Afterwards, we ll have a party at HYC with live music and food. If you normally race on Friday Nights, this is a great opportunity to try out the offshore racing scene in a fun format. For Friday Night racing, the most significant change is that we will start awarding prizes on a Above_Prima Donna chasing down Gerontius in the Wahine Regatta Aloha, Joseph Shacat Rear Commodore for Sail HYC

10 Aloha! Junior Sailing Scott Melander The annual Hawaii Youth Sailing Association El Toro Clinic will be January 8 and 9th in Kaneohe. This clinic is an amazing opportunity to sail with over 20 boats and features coaches from all the yacht clubs. Topics covered include rigging, boat-handling, boat speed and tactics. The 420 State Championships were held on December 13th in Kaneohe with 10 boats sailing with spinnaker and trapeze. The wind was from the north at about 8 knots and fairly steady. HYC Instructor Ailana Warren sailed with Alicia Ward and had a great regatta, finishing fourth in one race. She had her mainsheet bridle break in the last race but was in fifth place until that point. As Ailana says, I had a great day! Congratulations! The High School Sailing Season is coming up in early February. If you are a high school aged student and want to sail for your team, contact your schools Athletic Director for more information. We anticipate twelve schools sailing this year in Junior Varsity (Toppers) and Varsity (420s). Another sailing clinic coming up is the University of Hawaii hosted double handed clinic. This will be in Flying Juniors at UH s facility at Keehi Lagoon. The dates for this event are Jan 15 and 16th, the clinic director will be Brent Harrill, a former UH sailor. Thanks to Kawika Warren for taking out the junior sailors for the Christmas Boat Parade. It was a beautiful evening and the sailors had a good time singing for the Aloha Tower crowd. It was also exciting to see a cruise ship leave the harbor during the parade!mahalo, Scott Melander Jr. Sailing MIKE DOYLE, LIMITED MARINE SURVEYORS covering the Pacific since 1973 MICHAEL F. 11 Special Events Ron Pestel HYC / ALOHA TOWER MARKETPLACE 2010 TOYS FOR TOTS CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE A BIG SUCCESS The 16th Annual Boat Parade bookings started out slow because of the rainy weather and rough seas. BUT, our HYC Yachtswomen in charge had no fear of the deep briny seas. They somehow knew that Saturday December 11, 2010 would be one of the best days at sea. Barbara Mednick and NormaJean Cavell pulled off the BEST PARADE we have had in many years. They had 21 Yachts signed up and money in hand, by the night of the Captains meeting. in selling the show that the galley could not keep up. Johnny Rock played till closing and the club was busy. Every Yacht entered was a WINNER this year.they all looked spectacular but there were the Top 5 Yachts that ran away with some very nice BUCKs! 1st Place- Sundancer- Skippered by Hal Rainwater Charlie Brown Christmas-$500 2nd Place-Dolce Vita II- Skippered by Dr. Geoff David-Babes in Toyland-$300 3rd Place-Tanya- Skippered by Bill Taylor- Santa is Coming to Town-$200 Gordon Biersch Favorite - Mel Temi - Skippered by Brian Pestel - The Night Before Christmas - $200 Aloha Tower Marketplace Favorite - Genevieve-Skippered by Dave Kelly- Santa s Singing Sleigh Boat- $200 Above_Winning Crew of Overall Winner Cristmas Boat Parade Charlie Brown Christmas on Sundancer Yachties and their crews were decorating like crazy to meet the deadline, all showing up in front of Hawaii Yacht Club at 17:30 hours Saturday evening to form the parade line showing their stuff to the HYC members and guests on shore. The flotilla left the Ala Wai Harbor in great fashion and amazingly stayed in line throughout the parade. The only reported incident was on the Meltemi ( Santa & Mrs. Santa were on her bow coming from the North Pole ) Meltemi ran out of gas for their generator just after being reviewed by the Aloha Tower judges. All went dark and the elves were about to commit mutiny.boo Hoo Santa was in charge of da gas! BUT, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (Captained by Dave Cooper & mate) came to the rescue out at sea with da gas! So Santa & Mrs. Santa arrived in style at HYC s Aloha Dock. The food and refreshments were aplenty but somewhat slow in coming as Barb and NormaJean did such a great job There were so many crew members on the yachts that it would take pages to list the names. Thanks to them, their rides were all winners. The Rescue Boat was Leda with Dave Cooper at the rein of Rudolph. The Communications Boat was Kula Kai Momi, skippered by Howie Mednick with the notorious Al Bento on the radio their theme was A Mermaid Christmas!! Maybe Santa should have been on that yacht? All of us Yachties give a BIG MAHALO to Aloha Tower Marketplace, Gordon Bierch and all the merchants for their support. This event is for the kids and we all will continue to support them via Toys for Tots! 12 Cruising & Voyaging Patti Salomon The year 2010 has come to an end, and as we look back over the past year we feel a great appreciation of the people who make up the HYC Cruising & Voyaging Society. As a whole they are generous, positive and encouraging. And as individuals they make our gatherings and group cruises enjoyable and stimulating. Our presentations are well attended, and we look forward to using the new big screen TV in the coming year, thanks to donations from yacht club and CVS group members. And as they did last year, Jeff & Patty Naus invited fellow members for whale watching day-sails during the week between Christmas and New Years. Bill Taylor represented our group in the 2010 Christmas Boat Parade on Dec. 11th, and we congratulate him on his 3rd place win. Along with some 20 other lighted and decorated boats, they cruised past the HYC, out of the Ala Wai and around to Honolulu Harbor and the Aloha Tower Marketplace for judging. Bill and his crew of 10 dressed his boat Tanya with the theme Santa Claus is Coming to Town, complete with Santa on the rooftop. Bill and his crew generously donated the $200 cash prize to the Toys for Tots, one of the sponsors of the parade. Fellow members Dave Cooper & Nancy Terrell were also part of the parade in their runabout all decked out with festive lights, and true to form Dave was on hand when a couple of boaters needed assistance. Our last meeting of the year on Dec. 15th was a time for fun and pupus, with everyone getting together in the spirit of the holidays to share plenty of food and good conversation. During the meeting we also confirmed Tom Gebhardt as our new Fleet Captain for 2011, and we look forward to his ideas in the coming year. Mahalo to our outgoing Fleet Captain, Steve Dixon, who has filled our meetings with interesting speakers and thought-provoking subjects on boating and safety at sea. His energy has been much appreciated, and we thank him and wife Lila Moore for their time and enthusiasm in guiding our leaderless group. We meet regularly on the third Wednesday of each month, at 6:00 pm, on the HYC lower deck. We also gather for breakfast on the First Sunday of the month, 9:30 am at the HYC Galley by the Sea. All are welcome; consider joining us some time, maybe after checking out the Fuel Dock Swap Meet?? Check the web site, hyccruisingsociety. com, for news of upcoming presentations in January & Feb. In the meantime we wish you all health and prosperity in the New Year. Fair winds, Patti Salomon Above_ Pokai Bay, cruisers raft 12
