2 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS LIL LUFFERS Ages: 7-9 Boats: Vanguard 15 (V-15) and 420 Lil Luffers is the perfect choice for our youngest sailors. Students sail in Vanguard 15 or 420 sailboats with one or two peers and an instructor. The low student-to-instructor ratio places an emphasis on safety and learning! This course is designed to be a fun and unintimidating introduction to sailing and water safety. Prerequisite: Must be 7 years old, and be able to pass a basic swimming test. OVERBOARD OPTIS Ages: 8-13 Boats: Optimist The Opti sailor will learn a wide variety of skills, from sailing fundamentals to beginning racing. At the beginning of the session, the class may be broken up into groups based on skill level. In some segments of the class, all skill levels will sail together so they can have fun and learn from their own peer group. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS LEARN-TO-RACE CAMP Optimist: Ages 9-13 Vanguard 15: Ages Laser: Ages : Ages This one-week session will run from JULY This course is intended to be an unintimidating introduction to racing sailboats. Students will learn boat-handling techniques, starting, rules, tactics, and more, with a fun regatta on the last day of the class. Prerequisite: Students must have had at least one class of Sailing School at SYC, and/or be comfortable demonstrating basic sailing maneuvers, i.e. steering, tacking/gybing, and docking. BOAT DESCRIPTIONS JUNIOR JIBERS Ages: Boats: Vanguard 15, Laser, and 420 The Junior Jibers classes are suitable for all levels of experience. Students will have the opportunity to sail with a friend in a twoperson V-15 or 420, or sail individually in a Laser. A wide variety of skills will be covered, from sailing fundamentals to beginning racing. Weight recommendation: Minimum 100 lbs. HIGH SCHOOL Ages: Boats: Vanguard 15, Laser, and 420 The High School classes are suitable for all levels of experience. Students will have the opportunity to sail with a friend in a twoperson V-15 or 420, or sail individually in a Laser. A wide variety of skills will be covered, from sailing fundamentals to beginning racing. The Optimist (Opti) is an 8 foot, kid-sized individual dinghy that is easy to manage and fun to sail. The Laser is a fun, single-handed training boat. Students will sail with a friend in the double-handed Vanguard 15 (V-15). Advanced sailors can learn to rig the spinnaker and trapeze in the double-handed 420.

3 Participation Requirements: Every sailor will be required to: Pass a relatively easy swim test on the first day of each session. Wear a properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times on the water and dock. We suggest using the water ski or kayak Type III vest. Life jacket rentals are available for $10 per week. Kick-Off Barbeque: Monday, June 23rd 5:30-7:00 p.m. See the boats the children will be sailing and meet the instructors! Burgers, hot dogs, and salad will be served on the lawn at SYC. The summer sailing staff will be on hand to introduce themselves and answer questions about the SYC sailing programs. Cost is $13 per person. Wear shoes at all times. Sailing shoes, Aqua Socks or Teva-type sandals are OK. Flip-flop sandals are not recommended. Instructors: The Seattle Yacht Club employs summer sailing instructors each week. The instructors are all experienced sailors, with Level 1 Instructor Certification from U.S. Sailing, and First Aid and CPR training through the American Heart Association. Every Student will Receive: *Pictures of the sailors in action. *A Certificate to recognize course completion. *The annual Summer Sailing School T-shirt. *The Little Red Book. The Little Red Book is U.S. Sailing s certification system. As the sailors progress, instructors will sign off on the skills mastered. Class availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrations will also be accepted online, via mail, or fax. MEMBERS: Seattle Yacht Club Members will be able to register March 17th - 19th online, via fax, mail, or in person. After the 19th, the policy will be firstcome, first-served. We ask that you use your SYC membership number for billing purposes. Member prices include Members Children, Grandchildren, or Junior Members. FEES & CANCELLATION POLICY: Class fees shall be paid in full and accompanied with completed application forms to guarantee registration in the desired class(es). To maintain a quality program, there will be a $50 charge for class changes once registration has been processed. There will be a $100 cancellation charge for any cancellations or changes up until one week prior to the class date; after that time there will be no refunds.
