The format is a single race on the river at Maylands. Racing open to members and visitors. The race is open to Laser, Minnow, Mirror, Sabre, and Hartley boats. Other Dinghy Classes are welcome. Great viewing points for spectators from the jetty or the foreshore. Entrants and guests please join us for food and drinks after the race in the Maylands clubhouse. 5 uctions.html Racing starts at 2pm, sign on and briefing at 1.20pm Further Information: Steve Rose: Web: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CITY OF BAYSWATER REGATTA 2017 The schedule for the day will be: 1pm - Sausage Sizzle, Official Opening and Welcome 1:20 - Sign on and race briefing. The course map will be shown during sign-on. 2pm - Race Start (in the order Mixed Fleet; Sabre; Laser; Hartley) 3:30 - Approximate time racing completed 4:30 - Presentations; food and refreshments Racing will be held on a course in front of the Maylands clubhouse. There are good vantage points to watch the racing from the jetty, the clubhouse and the foreshore.

6 Cash prizes will be awarded in each class (except Hartley) for first and second places plus a surprise placing ( Splash for Cash ). There will be an additional prize for the overall first over the line sailor who successfully retrieves the pennant from the finishing buoy ( Dash for Cash ). Once racing is complete there will be presentations in the clubhouse, with food and refreshments (no charge for food, and drinks can be purchased at the bar). Many thanks to our sponsors City of Bayswater Commodore s Comments: It s unbelievable how quickly the end of the season is approaching with only five more races to go. The short course races on the 12 th March will have already been held by the time this newsletter comes out, but I am hoping that our student sailors will have been able to get a taste of racing. There is nothing quite like the melee of the start line to make a sailor forget port from starboard! (Ed see race report below, we only got one start in before the lightning and thunder hit the course!) City of Bayswater Regatta Could all members please make a special effort to attend. As mentioned above, Sunday 19 th March is the big day for the City

7 of Bayswater Regatta. Besides the cash prizes for first and second place in each class (except Hartleys), there is a special prize for a mystery placing ( Splash for cash ) so even if you are not at the front you could win! The class starts will be set to encourage close finishing, and will make for great spectator viewing, so that fast sailors from any of the classes has a chance to be first over the line! Once the racing is over we will be offering food and drinks (pay at the bar for drinks) in the clubhouse, and will present the prizes, so please could I ask all members to attend the post race formalities. Upcoming Races 1. There will be a line start on the 26th March. 2. The race on 2nd April will be changed from the planned short courses to a championship long course race, to replace the race cancelled in February due to the river floods. 3. The final race, and last Championship race, will be held on 9th April. Also remember that the end of the summer season means it will be the start of the winter season! A new sailing program will be put up, but basically the winter program is racing on the first Sunday of each month, from May to September, starting at 1pm. Maylands has been invited to put forward a team to compete in the Interclub Championship 7 th -9 th April. We are looking for a team of 6 if all men, or 7 if the team includes women and under- 23s. The racing will be on Foundation 36 yachts provided by Swan River Racing. Racing on the 7 th is for Veterans (over 50 s); racing on the 8 th is for women; racing on the 9 th is for open teams. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to be part of a Maylands team.

8 AGM & Season Wind Up The club AGM will be held on 9 th April at the clubhouse at 12:30 before racing. A club is only as strong as its committee. We have been very fortunate to have a strong and dedicated committee made of volunteer members to run the racing and maintain the clubhouse. New committee members are very welcome. Once the season closes we will be holding the season wind-up and presentation evening on the 6 th May more details to follow soon! 9 Looking Good Doug! CITY OF BAYSWATER REGATTA This Sunday members of the Training Group are encouraged to once more have a go on this important day. We want to show the Council that we are an active club very worthy of their continued support the more boats we can have on the water the better.

10 Happy sailing Ken Patterson Race Reports What a strange Summer we have had - strong sea breezes very early in the season, then cooler temperatures and more rain than we normally see in Winter! To top it off, we had lightning and thunder aplenty last weekend just after starting the first of two short races. Last Sunday it was great to see 5 or 6 Mirrors (in their own fleet) made up of the Sunday training sailors plus Doug and Rolna. It looked to be a close start too. 5 Sabres and 6 or 7 Lasers made for an interesting second start followed by the Hartleys. We would have seen some close racing if we had been able to complete more than 2 legs. In fact, most boats headed straight for the club house after one leg was completed after Aerodrome mark and we headed to Suicide (aptly named mark!). Lightning seemed to be edging closer and closer to the course from over St John of God hospital. Most of the fleet got back to shore before the heavens opened up and further sailing was, of course, cancelled for the day. Sunday 26th February - Laser/Sabre Start

Saturday and the opening races were held in the afternoon in light conditions with 15 Mirrors on the line. She, Wookie and Transom Note took the honours and looked hard to beat for the championship. Sunday was full of surprises with building conditions with frequent white caps on the inlet, but very few spinnakers and conservative sailing the order of the day. Broken gaff (Rabbit), rudders (Old Salt and Transom Note) and tiller, (Kraken) were all casualties in the heavy conditions. 2 Pudd got a second place as their best result but came 3rd on handicap and 4th overall by the

15 slimmest of margins. If the regatta continues to grow, Lasers, Sabres and Mirrors will need to book early as the weekend is full of rivalry, friendship and the willing sharing of ideas to make your sailing more fun and efficient. Walpole in the trees regatta is one not to miss! 16 Come along this Sunday to see this 1923 "Maylands Cup" restored to the Maylands Yacht Club as part of our long history of sailing "from the jetty" that dates back to before WWI.
