2 COMMODORE S COMMENTS. 28 Twenty Eight. That is the number of HIYC members that were listed on the agenda to report at our HIYC Spring Quarterly meeting. Twenty Eight members volunteer for responsibilities and report either to the board, or the membership on a regular basis. Twenty Eight members assume a leadership role to assist in taking care of our property, clubhouse, club boats, docks, programs, daily operations and board administration. Also on the day of our Spring Quarterly meeting, over 50 members cleaned the shoreline, kitchen cabinets, painted the deck, replaced light bulbs, did maintenance on our club boats, checked the docks, cooked and prepared lunch, and polished the silver in our trophy room. A newer member assumes the responsibility of washing every window inside and outside our clubhouse each clean up day. Awesome And that is not all. We have volunteer members at our club each week, running our racing program, sea scouts program, preparing for Sail Camp, taking special groups sailing like middle school students and handicapped groups. Members help members to launch their boat, climb a mast, rescue on water, advise with repairs, or help a new skipper with rigging and knot tying. One of the hallmarks of HIYC is the volunteer spirit. By the time you read this article the 5th Annual O L Shultz Alive Hospice Regatta will be in our history books. This event, the largest sailing regatta in our state. It requires months of planning and preparation to execute not only the racing, but also the special events like the silent auction, memorial burgees, and Club Celebration dinner on Saturday night. Special thanks to Vice Commodore Bob and first mate Terri for your leadership and hard work and the many volunteer members they recruited. In this issue of The Anchorline you will also see the Annual Budget. Many thanks for our Treasurer Fred Beesley, the board, and each of our committee members who projected needs and expenses for this year. Due to the good stewardship of our club, we were able to fund program request and allow a small emergency contingency fund, without raising dues! Plus we replaced the icemaker with money already in the bank. We are in good shape. Looking Ahead Chuck Konesky Great River Race, Cheeseburger in Paradise Party with live music, 4 weeks of Sail Camp, 4th of July Events, Y-Flyer nationals, and 25 Year Celebration of our Sea Scouts program at HIYC.. and sunset sails with my first mate with favorite wine and cheese.. 17 Sea Scout News It works best when I sit down and shut up and let the kids do it. And one of the hardest things for me to do is sit down and shut up. This is something I have said for many years and it holds just as true today as it did when I first said it. At the meeting before the second hospice Regatta weekend I watched as our Scouts directioned each other in practicing the tolling of the Bell ceremony that they would be conducting two days later. They were not satisfied with how the ceremony had gone the week before and they wanted the next one to be perfect. And what they achieved that evening was simply fantastic. And best of all they did it on their own including coming up with what was to be said as an introduction to the ceremony. Yes it works best when I sit down and shut up. May 5th our Scouts will be running the annual Sea Scout Pfeffer Regatta at Boxwell Boy Scout camp on Old Hickory Lake. Work on this started a couple of months ago. And it provides a wonderful learning experience for all involved. Including the P.R.O. which again will be one of our Scouts. And then May 12th we will be holding a bilge sale in front of the West Marine store in Hermitage. Please come out to help support these youth in this fundraising opportunity. We meet every Thursday evening starting at 6 p.m. and this time of the year weather allowing we're on the water. But as word of our program has spread our numbers have increased. And this is a good thing except that we found ourselves without enough equipment to get all the kids out on the water. Then a couple of weeks ago our commodore Gene Lovelace completed negotiations with the Vanderbilt Sailing Club allowing us use of 4 of their flying Junior sailboats. Allowing us to put 12 youth on the water at one time. To say that we are thrilled is an understatement. Thank you so much. Additionally with the loss of so many moorings due to the corps regulations there is no longer room for us to receive donated boats. Which was our major source of funding for well over 20 years. And yes this has hurt us deeply. But our wonderful HIYC board has risen to the challenge and now included us in the budget with enough money to pay for our insurance, boat registration and light boat maintenance. And previous commodore Dave Brandon is now in charge of helping us to raise additional monies for items such as youth and adult training which we have always paid for out-of-pocket. And hopefully soon we ll be able to raise enough for the kids to take another big sailing trip. Again these efforts are greatly appreciated. Andy Griswold
18 A huge HIYC thanks to event chairman Bob Carlton, PRO Bruce Richards and crash boat crew, to Cindy and Gene Lovelace. Auctioneer Nelson Miller, and all who turned out to support this important event. A special thanks to our Sea Scouts and leader Andy Griswold.
