36 The start strategy We are sailing he first race in a serie of 10 races. We will try to establish a solid result to have a good starting position for the second half of the races. We expect a continuous wind shift to the right. This is in accordance with the weather forecast. Therefore we should sail to the right side of the course as early as possible. The left side of the starting line is slightly favoured. This fact makes the starting corridor a little smaller. If we start on the left side, it will be difficult to cross to the right course area. It is important for us, to have the possibility to tack to the right, because our plan is to sail on the right side of the course. At the committee vessel it can be a little crowded. So a start in the middle of the line should be the best choice. Then we have the opportunity to sail to the right side of the course straight after the starting signal.

53 Windward mark - approaching The layline can be a curve, like in a constant wind shift (Film: fa005) In this case it is not easy to find the right moment to tack. Better slightly too far than too short.

54 Windward mark approaching, basic rules Approch from the middle of the course When entering the last quarter of the tacking leg, dont be close to the layline avoid approching the windward mark on port tack exception: you are clearly first or last ;-) go late enough to the layline on starboard, to avoid being too long in dirty air but, early enough to find a space in the row of boats approching on starbord Tack leeward of the other boats only, if you are sure to reach the windward mark
