1 UWCSEA Gap Year: Profile of Host Organization A note to participating organizations: The purpose of the document is to provide potential volunteers and their parents with sufficient details about each volunteer programme to make an informed choice about each UWCSEA gap year project. Kevin Morley UWCSEA Gap Year Coordinator Details of the host organisation Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation B Berth Victoria Quay, Fremantle, WA 6160 AUSTRALIA Volunteer Coordinator Adrian Griffith volunteer@sailleeuwin.com The work of host organization The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation, based in Fremantle, Western Australia, provides an opportunity for a life changing experience onboard sail training tall ship, Leeuwin II. The foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to youth development. The youth program has been running since 1986, and is designed to be both physically and emotionally challenging. The program helps young people reach their personal potential through the development of social confidence and relationship skills in 4 broad areas: 1. The concept of self 2. Communication skills 3. Teamwork 4. A sense of community The benefits of the program directly impact the individual s peers, their school, family and community. These benefits are transferable as young people phase into adulthood as future employees and as responsible citizens in our communities.

We are looking for volunteers who will assist us in delivering our youth development program as volunteer crew. Ideally our volunteers will: have an interest in sailing, be comfortable working alongside youth, be enthusiastic and committed, have a huge sense of humour, enjoy having fun, and be willing to make some great friends! Volunteering your time at Leeuwin can be rewarding in many ways. Not only do you have the chance to meet people with a similar interest, you can gain experience in a multitude of areas. We rely heavily on volunteers to assist us with many of the ongoing tasks of keeping the ship afloat. We believe that our success is a direct result of the committed and enthusiastic people who make up our organisation. The input and contribution of Leeuwin volunteers continues to define the Foundation as a unique and dynamic community asset. As a LEEUWIN Volunteer you are entitled to the following benefits: Sail as crew onboard the Leeuwin! Invitations to attend Leeuwin training and educational workshops. Social Activities: You will have the opportunity to attend a wide variety of social activities including quiz and movie nights put on by the Leeuwin Social Crew. Publications: You will receive The Leeuwin Challenge magazine and other information on Leeuwin activities. Refit: You can be a part of maintaining WA s only Square Rigged Tall Ship, helping to keep the ship running for future generations of youth. There are many different roles for volunteers at Leeuwin. A few of these are ship maintenance both above and below deck, assisting with engineering and electronics, rope work, crewing the ship and even office administration work, just to name a few. Sailing on Voyages 2

3 Our volunteer crew are responsible for supporting the permanent crew to smoothly sail the ship through the duration of the voyage and to support the learning and experiences of the trainees onboard. Each voyage requires a compliment of up to nine volunteer crew members: 4 x Watch Leaders 2 x Trainee Watch Leaders 1 x Purser 1 x Cook s Mate 1 x Bosun s Mate Your first voyage on board will be as a trainee, where you will learn the daily activities involved with a voyage, following that the ships crew will work with you to help you achieve one of the above ratings. Our volunteer scheme may be of particular interest to those wishing to study: Maritime studies, seamanship, navigation, catering and engineering. Sailing a tall ship Working with young people 3

4 Our conditions of service Minimum commitment: Three months and maximum of six. Times of year volunteers are needed: September through to June Insurance cover requirements: Must have their own full insurance cover Monthly costs for volunteers: NIL (they have to cover their travel costs) Visa requirements: Student working visa for Australia Number of volunteers required: Up to four Additional Information for volunteers and parents Local health care provision Accommodation, utilities and services Volunteers playing an active role in the daily functions of the ship are permitted to stay onboard the Leeuwin II ship, utilizing the ships accommodation and amenities free of charge. Those participating actively in ship life are also provided with meals, while not assisting in ship operations meals are at the cost of the volunteer. Local transport from accommodation to work placement Volunteers actively involved in the ships operations can stay onboard the Leeuwin II ship. Recreation facilities When in port the Leeuwin II vessel is located in Fremantle harbor, in Fremantle city. Fremantle city offers a wide range of recreational facilities including pools, gyms, shops, tourist attractions etc. Internet access and communications Limited access to internet services is available while the ship is in port. While out at sea Internet access is nil and communications are restricted. Additional expenses for volunteers All volunteers are required to have a red-shirt volunteer uniform shirt (preferably 2) at a cost of $27 each. Meals/activities outside of normal ship operation life are at the cost of the volunteer. 4
