1 Sep 2017 Annapolis, Maryland Volume 76, Number 9 Commander s Message Cdr Jeffrey Short, JN I have been racing Wednesday nights on the Magothy River for many years now and I found the spring to be a lot colder for a lot longer. We were wearing long pants and jackets well into the season. Then the summer hit with a vengeance. I can t remember a single Wednesday night race ever being canceled but this year so far there have been three races cancelled due to storms or lack of wind. During one canceled race, we rafted up with a few other multihulls in the middle of the Magothy River and though we had never dropped an anchor, the raft up didn t move an inch for three hours! No breeze, no waves, no current. It was incredible. On the other extreme there were at least two occasions when we were caught in colossal squalls the likes of which I had never seen on the river before. During one squall the wind veered suddenly and went from 8 knots to 30 knots in a matter of seconds and resulted in one trimaran capsizing. We even had not one, but several water spouts on the bay this summer. This was certainly a boating season with all kinds of excitement. Boat show season is now upon us. District 5 is once again providing a booth at both the Sailboat and Powerboat shows in Annapolis and ASPS is hosting. We have posted the link to the volunteer schedule. Please take a look at the schedule and Tony Martin with the shifts that you would like to volunteer for. We will fill in the schedule as we get your preferences. First come, first choice. As the shifts are taken we will constantly keep the link updated. These boat shows are a huge District 5 undertaking and we look forward to everyone s participation. We had some amazing ASPS events this summer thanks to Noni and Lacey. We plan to keep the events coming throughout the Fall and Winter. ASPS has done nearly 170 VSCs thus far and we want to get more in before folks start heading south. I m hoping that we hit the 200 mark this year. Our marketing effort is really paying off. We have had some great member profiles in the Spinsheet and Proptalk magazines thanks to Tony Martin. These two widely distributed magazines have a lot of material they can choose from and for them to highlight members of ASPS in print is truly an honor. You can find our calendar of events in these magazines as well. We have 223 members in our ASPS MeetUp group and they are excited about the upcoming education offerings that Mike has put together for the Fall and Winter. 2 Executive Officer Lt/C Anthony Martin, JN As we come closer to September, we begin to set our sights on activities and events for the Fall. First on the list is our upcoming Crab Feast; which I am sure you will hear more about from our Administrative Officer. Almost immediately thereafter is the Annapolis Sail and Power Boat Shows, where District 5 will be hosting a booth. We do this in an effort to introduce and remind local boaters who we are, what we do and how we can help them be safer on the water. For those of you interested in helping with the Annapolis Boat Show booth in October, please note the following links: Sail Boat Show Power Boat Show These links will direct you to the schedule for either the Sail or Power Boat Show. Please note they are case sensitive. Once there, you will see available dates and time slots. Choose the one most convenient to your schedule and send an to admartinesq@gmail.com. Thereafter, your selection will be confirmed and listed accordingly. If for some reason you are not able to keep your commitment, please let us know as soon as possible, so that someone else can cover that slot. Wear Khakis with your USPS or Squadron Apparel, name tag and cap with emblem, if you have them. It will help get you into the Boat Show, in the event your paper work or registration as an exhibitor gets lost or otherwise not entered into the data base. When you arrive, confirm that the Display Table has tri-fold brochures, info cards, handouts and a few DNR pamphlets. With respect to the table; when talking to people, do not have the table between you and your audience. Needless to say, the table should not be used for picnicking. Please do not eat or drink in the booth area. In terms of Do s and Don ts, while manning the booth, the following should be kept in mind. When visitors are nearby, do not talk to your fellow squadron members, focus on the visitor. Listen twice before speaking once. Find out what their interests and needs are, before explaining who we are, what we do and how we can help them become more competent and confident on the water. Engage in an informal exchange that is not a hard sell. Handouts should be given only to those who really seem interested. Don t chase people or insist that they take a handout. If a course and seminar schedule is not available, mention the Anchor Watch Publication or MeetUp Calendar. For those living out of the local area, reference the USPS Web Site and/or the D5 Web Site. As you give your visitors a handout, remind them that we hold Classes and Seminars, do VSCs, and some on the water training. We also enjoy Picnics, Raft Ups, Dinners and other social events. If they are interested, get their contact information. Make sure you check it for legibility and zip code. Then make sure you get that to our membership chair; Kathy Slattery ASAP! Comm cont. from page 1 Lastly, I participated in the District 5 Summer Council in Portsmouth, VA. I really had a great time. News from National is that we are now officially called United States Power Squadrons; America s Boating Club. District 5 has been promoting this effort for quite some time but it is now official. We even have a new logo. There are many new national marketing materials coming out including some new videos starring ASPS members. These sure are exciting times. Lets continue to make the water a safer place. United States Power Squadrons - America s Boating Club Page 2
3 ASPS had another great season of water activities and attendance, even when challenged by the weather. It does seem many owners had boat issues, causing cancellation or delays, so remember to take that Engine Maintenance Course when offered. The last raft-up turned rendezvous at Cox Creek started with small craft warnings and a few boats had to cancel. Once again Puff-On was late to the party due to engine difficulties it wouldn t start and sailing into an anchorage for the first time unadvisable. We let our fellow boaters know of our dilemma and location. After what seemed like an eternity of troubleshooting the culprit was found a fuse in the ignition switch. ALWAYS have spares onboard (which we did). As we motored into the channel who do we see but M/V Persistence with Captain Gary Antonides at the helm and the LUX Crew aboard. When they could not hail us on the VHF or phone they came looking. Be sure to keep in contact, have the radio turned up and do file a sail plan when leaving your home port. All good things must come to an end not really! As the official end of Summer approaches (Labor Day) the Fall boating season on the Chesapeake kicks into gear. Gone is the heat, stillness and stifling humidity that characterizes the middle of the summer. Just because the Annapolis Sail and Power Squadron has no official boating events on the calendar consider reaching out to a member and make your own impromptu raft-up or rendezvous. Remember, the membership roster may be downloaded from wintergull@hotmail.com for the password. Fall is the start of our Membership dinners at the Elks Club every 1 st Thursday. We have a terrific line-up of Speakers. Consider bringing a guest. Volunteers for set-up and clean-up are needed for the Crab Feast. LUX crew is always there to help but let s allow them to take a break this time! A sign-up sheet will be at the dinner meeting. SPEAKER LINE-UP FOR UPCOMING MEETINGS Mark your calendar NOT TO BE MISSED: October How to Choose a PFD and Deploy a Life Raft There will be an actual demonstration November Sailing in the Mediterranean - Our very own Julia LaJoie and Purnell Delly will share their adventures aboard Tigerlily this past summer December Holiday Party and Santa (no Speaker) UPCOMING EVENT: Administrative Officer Lt/C Noni Rondeau, JN Saturday, 30 September starting at 1300, the ASPS Annual Crab Feast. It will be held at the Bay Ridge Community Center near the marina. Volunteers are needed to help set-up. Details on page 8 of the Anchor Watch. We hope to see many of our members at these events.
