Gary Sharla Sparks Bill Gary IV Ann Donnelly Best Wishes to Rich Bush Richard Bush joined Green Turtle Bay in May of Having served in the Marines, Rich brought a no-nonsense get er done work ethic to our Dry Stack operation that was a welcome breath of fresh air. When his predecessor chose another career path, I leapt on the opportunity to promote Rich into the managerial position. The rest of the GTB ownership quickly realized that this was the absolute best fit for Dry Stack going forward. It s great when we sing the praises of our employees, but it s a greater honor when our customers do it for us, just like this. Back in 2001 the concept of dry stack was a new one to me. But then again, in 2001 the concept of boating in general was new as well. Fortunately for me I met a guy who was all too familiar with both. Not only did that experience start the process of providing me with an invaluable boating education, but it also helped to form the beginning of what has become a wonderful friendship. that guy was Richard Bush, the now Manager of GTB Dry Stack. Over the years I have come to recognize and respect Rich as one of the hardest working people I know. Not only is he hard working and willing to do just about anything to help a customer or a friend, but he has always done so with a wonderful attitude and kind-hearted Kentucky spirit. I found out a few weeks ago that after 20+ years at Green Turtle Bay, Rich has decided to retire and try his hand at something else. I am certain that Rich s departure from GTB will be bittersweet for him as it will be for all of us who relied on him as the face of dry stack and as a dear friend around the resort. I know that he will be missed by the Gary family and by the rest of the staff around the property. And, of course, by all of the dry stack patrons who have undoubtedly become spoiled by Rich s commitment to customer service! Thank you, Rich for all of your help and for your friendship! You have done so much for so many over the years and I know that all of those you have touched join me in wishing you nothing but the best as you move to the next chapter in your life. Marc Sanders GTB Pier V Rich, thank you for being such an integral part of Green Turtle Bay s success. The Green Turtle Bay Board of Directors, Dad, Bette, Vida, Bill Huffman, myself & Machelle, and Tom Moodie wish you the best and hope to see you often. Bill IV

6 2018 CYC BOARD OFFICERS & DIRECTORS OFFICERS Commodore: Sharla Sparks Vice Commodore: Danny Cope Rear Commodore: Gina Yegerlehner Recording Secretary: Suzy Pence Treasurer: Rick Jewett Immediate Past: Jerry Koerner Commonwealth Yacht Club Monthly Newsletter Summer is not over yet. The Fall Equinox is on Sunday, September 23rd. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the moment when the sun stands directly above the equator while crossing from the North to the South. It is also the moment Summer ends and Autumn begins. By the way, the Northern Hemisphere is where nearly 90% of the world s population lives. The temperatures begin to drop and the days start to get shorter than the nights. Even with shorter days, we still have plenty of time to enjoy our outdoor activities. Living in the Mid-West allows us to enjoy the cooler days and nights while we enjoy the fall foliage season. The CYC cruise to the Paducah riverfront on August 11th had 11 boats in the flotilla. The cruise was very enjoyable but we did have our share of adventure. For some of us it was the first time we locked our boats through locks. What an experience that was! The one consolation was all the boats except one stayed in the flotilla and locked through together going back home. So, there was safety in numbers. We all fully enjoyed walking around downtown Paducah taking in all the shops and restaurants. We had our pick of where to eat Saturday evening as there are a variety of restaurants in downtown Paducah. I certainly hope everyone attended Green Turtle Bays celebration of Marina Day on August 18th. This is a fantastic celebration with food stands, activities for the kids, terrific entertainment and unbelievable fireworks to end the day. CYC s 13th annual Commonwealth Cup Regatta will be on September 29th & 30th with registration at Green Turtle Bay s conference center on September 28th. Our title sponsor for the regatta is 1st Kentucky Bank. This is a weekend of racing and fun. Classes include JAM A, JAM B, Spinnaker, Cruising and J22/One Design. 7 Welcome New Members! THOMAS & CYNTHIA KING, JIM & KYLE LIVINGSTON, MITCH & JANICE LAMPKINS To promote and encourage fellowship, friendship and camaraderie among our members and guests, by creating, organizing and providing boating activities for our club members and the surrounding water communities. Commodore s Corner Why I Sail By now it s no secret you all know I am crazy about sailing. Here is a question I hear all the time: Why would you want to work so hard to spend time on the water, when you could easily just turn the key on a different boat to get that wind whipping through your hair a lot sooner? Sharla Sparks Come to think of it, working in the biggest and best yacht brokerage on the lakes, I do have Commodore access to quite a variety of high quality and high performing boats. All I would have to do is pick one and sign on the dotted line! My answer is usually some version of, Oh, it s not that much work! We are all willing to put in different amounts of work to different ends. It shows up in all facets of our lives. How tall is the grass in your front yard? Do you buy your tomatoes or grow your own in the summer? Did you ever hear the question, what s it worth to you? That s not (necessarily) a question about buying boats. A long time ago, as a child who was discovering a passion for creating music, I learned very quickly that the quality of my creation was directly impacted by the amount and type of effort I was willing to put in. Whether I was practicing fundamentals for the sake of training or preparing a piece of music for a public performance, the more work I put in, the richer the reward became. It is clear to me now that I became a kind of junkie; I was addicted to the process. The rich harmonies, the mathematical alignment of the rhythms, and the sheer emotional power I felt in the melodies combined to leave me powerless to step away. Add in my sense of achievement when I was able to make it all come together, and further consider the applause and praise heaped upon me by folks who could never do something like that, and you have the monster that is me. I could never do something like that. Sailing is too much work. It turns out that for me, it really is not work at all. Much like my willingness to spend days working out one small passage of music, I find myself addicted to the process all over again. Only this time it is the mercurial winds, the mathematics of sail shape and all the intricacies of the rigging combined with the sounds of the water, wind, and waves, that keep me coming back for more. Don t miss CYC s next recital, oh I mean race: September 1, 15, and 30; and the Commonwealth Cup Regatta September See you on the lake! We would like to emphasize that all CYC members are welcomed at any CYC-sponsored event. Get more information on specific events at: SEPTEMBER 7
