2 The trophy for the America s Cup does not weigh much. But it carries more weight than any other trophy in international yachting. In 2007, the BMW ORACLE Racing Team embarked on the challenge of winning this race. And like the America s Cup, where every manoeuvre requires absolute precision and total commitment, the 2007 BMW ORACLE Racing Collection is based on meeting the highest demands in terms of materials, workmanship, functionality and design. In honour of the illustrious history of the America s Cup, the individual garments in the Collection are named after legendary yachts like Atalanta, Intrepid, or Mayfl ower. Which, in a way, makes them ideal talismans to help you enjoy your own adventures at sea. 24 tons focused on a single goal: 134 ounces.

As the Canadian yacht Atalanta sailed to the start of the 1881 race in New York, the last planks were still being nailed to the deck. In order to get Reliance race-ready in 1903, the New York C. Oliver Iselin Syndicate invested $450,000. A fi nancial risk that was rewarded with the yacht s victory over Shamrock. But after an intense three months of racing, the yacht was no longer seaworthy. No other regatta is as hard on the crews and boats as the America s Cup. Stormy weather. Long before the start of the race.

The English yacht designer Laurent Giles introduced some spectacular innovations. His Flica II from 1939 featured aluminium masts. And coffee-grinder winches so called because of their mode of operation. American property developer Elizabeth Meyer proved that the fascination of these boats endures for many years. She completely restored Endeavour, a British yacht which had participated in the 1934 and 1937 America s Cup races not just the hull and sails, but also the boat s interior. The reward for this labour of love: on 22 June 1989, Endeavour took to the seas again. As stylish and majestic as 52 years before. Nothing makes more waves than a good idea.

6 A tailwind like no other: team spirit.

7 The path to success is narrow. But not necessarily a narrow bow. At the end of the 19 th century, many shipbuilders had the ambition to make their yachts ever longer and heavier and at the same time ever slimmer. For a short period, these slim giants were the be-all and end-all in yachting. In 1884, this trend culminated in the 80-ton British racing yachts Irex and Genesta. In the 1885 America s Cup, Genesta was beaten by the more lightweight and agile Puritan (USA), but then went on to win the Cape May Challenge Cup and the Brenton Reef Cup. In 1886, Irex triumphed in these races. But the America s Cup continued to be won by yachts that were wider, lighter and faster. Irex Yachting Wind Jacket Ladies
