1 Al-Aqidah Al-Wasitiyyah by Ibn Taymiyyah Translated by Abu Amina Elias Al-Aqidah Al-Wasitiyyah is a summary of the Atharī creed of Sunni Islam by Aḥmad ibn Abd al-ḥalīm Taqī al-dīn ibn Taymīyah. He approached us during the Hajj pilgrimage and he was among the people of virtue and religion. He complained of the people among him in that land under the Tartar government, of the prevalence of ignorance and oppression, the loss of religion and knowledge. He asked me to write a creed for him that he and his household could rely upon. I abstained from that and I said, People have written a number of credal texts, so take one of the creeds written by the Imams of the Sunnah. He persisted in asking and he said, I would like no one but you to write it. 2 The following presentation is the creed s text in Arabic alongside its English translation: متن العقيدة الواسطية The text of al- Aqīdah al-wāsiṭīyah In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful. ب س م هللا الر ح م ن الر ح يم الحمد هلل ال ذي أ ر س ل ر س ول ه ب ال ه د ى و د ين ال ح ق ل ي ظ ه ر ه ع ل ى الد ين ك ل ه و ك ف ى ب اهلل ش ه يدا All praise is due to Allah, who sent His messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it manifest over all religions. 3 القواعد األساسية في اإليمان بأسماء هللا وصفاته Fundamental principles of faith in the names of Allah and His attributes و م ن اإليم ان ب اهلل اإل يم ان ب م ا و ص ف ب ه ن ف س ه ف ي ك ت اب ه ال ع ز يز و ب م ا و ص ف ه ب ه ر س ول ه م ح م د صلى هللا عليه وسلم من غ ي ر ت ح ر يف و ل ت ع ط يل و م ن غ ي ر ت ك ي يف و ل ت م ث ي ل Part of faith in Allah is to have faith in the way He described Himself in His honorable book and in the way described by His messenger Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, without distortion and negation, and without asking how or likening Him to something else. ب ل ي ؤ م ن ون ب أ ن هللا ل ي س ك م ث ل ه ش ي ء و ه و الس م يع الب ص ي ر Rather, they believe that for Allah there is nothing like Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. (42:11) ف ل ي ن ف ون ع ن ه م ا و ص ف ب ه ن ف س ه و ل ي ح ر ف ون ال ك ل م ع ن م و اض ع ه و ل ي ل ح د ون ف ي أ س م اء هللا وآي ات ه و ل ي ك يف ون و ل ي م ث ل و ن ص ف ات ه ب ص ف ات خ ل ق ه They do not nullify what He was described with, nor do they distort the words from their proper places. They do not blaspheme against the names of Allah and His verses, nor do they ascribe a modality to Him, nor do they compare His attributes to those of His creation. ل ن ه س ب ح ان ه ل س م ي ل ه و ل ك ف ء ل ه و ل ن د ل ه For He, glory be to Him, has no likeness, no comparison, and no partner. و ل ي ق اس ب خ ل ق ه س ب ح ان ه و ت ع ال ى Nor is He measureable in analogy with His creation, glory be to Him, the Exalted. ف إن ه أ ع ل م ب ن ف س ه و ب غ ي ر ه و أ ص د ق ق ي ل و أ ح س ن ح د يثا م ن خ ل ق ه ث م ر س ل ه ص اد ق ون م ص د ق ون ب خ ل ف ال ذ ين ي ق ول ون ع ل ي ه م ا ل ي ع ل م ون Indeed, He knows Himself best, as well as everything else. He is the most truthful in speech, the best in address to His creation. 4 worlds, (31: ). He glorified Himself above what was described by those who opposed the messengers. He sent peace upon the messengers, as they described Allah free of any of the defects or faults that they claimed for Him. و ه و س ب ح ان ه ق د ج م ع ف يما و ص ف و س م ى ب ه ن ف س ه بين الن ف ي و اإل ث ب ات He, glory be to Him, combined what He described and named for Himself between negation and affirmation. ف ل ع د ول ل ه ل الس ن ة و ال ج م اع ة ع م ا ج اء ب ه ال م ر س ل ون ف إ ن ه الص ر اط ال م س ت ق يم ص ر اط و الص د يق ين و الش ه د اء والص ال ح ي ن ال ذ ين أ ن ع م هللا ع ل ي ه م م ن الن ب ي ي ن Hence, Ahl al-sunnah wal Jama ah do not deviate from what the messengers brought. Indeed, it is the straight path, the path of those whom Allah has favored among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. اإليمان بما وصف هللا به نفسه في كتابه Faith in what Allah described for Himself in His Book و ق د د خ ل ف ي ه ذ ه ال ج م ل ة م ا و ص ف هللا ب ه ن ف س ه ف ي س ور ة اإل خ ل ص ال ت ي ت ع د ل ث ل ث ال ق ر آن ح يث ي ق و ل ق ل ه و هللا أ ح د هللا الص م د ل م ي ل د و ل م ي ول د و ل م ي ك ن ل ه ك ف وا أ ح د Included in the entirety of this is what Allah described for Himself in Su rat al-ikhla s, which is equal to a third of the Quran, wherein He says, Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He does not give birth, nor was He born. And there is no comparison with Him. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him, nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His footstool extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not, for He is the Exalted, the Almighty. (2:255) abuaminaelias.com 4

5 و ل ه ذ ا ك ان م ن ق ر أ ه ذ ه ا ل ي ة ف ي ل ي ل ة ل م ي ز ل ع ل ي ه م ن هللا ح اف ظ و ل ي ق ر ب ه ش ي ط ان ح ت ى ي ص ب ح For this reason, whoever had read this verse in the night, Allah will not cease to guard him and Satan will not approach him until morning. صفة الحياة Attribute of life و ق و ل ه س ب ح ان ه و ت و ك ل ع ل ى ال ح ي ال ذ ي ل ي م و ت And His saying, glory be to Him, Rely upon the Living, He who never dies. (25:58) صفة العلم Attribute of knowledge و ق و ل ه س ب ح ان ه ه و ا ل و ل و ا لخ ر و الظ اه ر و ال ب اط ن و ه و ب ك ل ش ي ء ع ل يم And His saying, glory be to Him, He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He has knowledge over all things. (57:3) He is the Knowing, the Wise. (66:20) و ه و ال ع ل يم ال ح ك يم و ه و ال ح ك يم ال خ ب ير ي ع ل م م ا ي ل ج ف ي ا ل ر ض و م ا ي خ ر ج م ن ه ا و م ا ي نز ل م ن الس م اء و م ا ي ع ر ج ف يه ا He is the Wise, the Aware. He knows what enters the earth and what comes out from it and what descends from the heavens and what ascends therein. (34:1-2) و ع ند ه م ف ات ح ال غ ي ب ل ي ع ل م ه ا إ ل ه و و ي ع ل م م ا ف ي ال ب ر و ال ب ح ر و م ا ت س ق ط م ن و ر ق ة إ ل ي ع ل م ه ا و ل ح ب ة ف ي ظ ل م ات ا ل ر ض و ل ر ط ب و ل ي اب س إ ل ف ي ك ت ا ب م ب ين With Him are the keys of the Unseen, none knows them but Him. He knows what is on land and in the sea. No leaf falls but that He knows it. No grain is there within the darknesses of the earth, nor any moist or dry thing but that it is in a clear record. 6 ق د أ ح اط ب ك ل ش ي ء ع ل ما ع ل ى ك ل ش ي ء ق د ير و أ ن هللا ل ت ع ل م وا أ ن هللا That you would know Allah has power over all things and that Allah encompasses all things in Knowledge. (65:12) صفة القوة Attribute of might ه و الر ز اق ذ و ال ق و ة ال م ت ي ن و ق و ل ه إ ن هللا And His saying, Verily, Allah is the Provider, possessor of strength and might. (51:58) صفة السمع وصفة البصر Attributes of hearing and seeing و ق و ل ه ل ي س ك م ث ل ه ش ي ء و ه و الس م يع الب ص ي ر And His saying, There is nothing like him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. (42:11) ك ان س م يعا ب ص يرا ن ع م ا ي ع ظ ك م ب ه إ ن هللا إ ن هللا Verily, excellent is that with which Allah admonishes you. Verily, Allah is ever hearing and seeing. (4:58) صفة اإلرادة Attribute of will و ق و ل ه و ل و ل إ ذ د خ ل ت ج ن ت ك ق ل ت م ا ش اء هللا ل ق و ة إ ل ب اهلل Were it not that you entered your garden and said: As Allah has willed, there is no power but with Allah. (18:39) ي ف ع ل م ا ي ر يد و ل و ش اء هللا م ا اق ت ت ل وا و لك ن هللا If Allah had willed, they would not have fought each other, but Allah does what He wills. (2:253) abuaminaelias.com 6

7 ي ح ك م م ا ي ر ي د أ ح ل ت ل ك م ب ه يم ة ا ل ن ع ام إ ل م ا ي ت ل ى ع ل ي ك م غ ي ر م ح ل ي الص ي د و أ نت م ح ر م إ ن هللا Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock, except for that which is recited to you, hunting not being permitted while you are in the state of pilgrimage. Verily, Allah judges as He wills. (5:1) ف م ن ي ر د هللا أ ن ي ه د ي ه ي ش ر ح ص د ر ه ل إل س ل م و م ن ي ر د أ ن ي ض ل ه ي ج ع ل ص د ر ه ض ي قا ح ر جا ك أ ن م ا ي ص ع د ف ي الس م اء Whoever Allah intends to guide, He opens his heart to Islam. Whoever Allah intends to misguide, He makes his heart constricted as if he were ascending into the sky. (6:125) صفة المحبة Attribute of love And His saying, Do good, for Allah loves those who do good. (2:195) Be fair, for Allah those who are fair. (49:9) ي ح ب ال م ح س ن ين و ق و ل ه و أ ح س ن و ا إ ن هللا ي ح ب ال م ق س ط ين و أ ق س ط وا إ ن هللا ي ح ب ال م ت ق ين ف م ا اس ت ق ام وا ل ك م ف اس ت ق يم وا ل ه م إ ن هللا As long as they are upright to you, be upright to them. Verily, Allah loves the righteous. (9:7) ي ح ب الت و اب ين و ي ح ب ال م ت ط ه ر ين إ ن هللا Verily, Allah loves those who repent and He loves those who purify themselves. (2:222) Say: If you love Allah, follow me and Allah will love you. (3:31) ف ات ب ع ون ي ي ح ب ب ك م هللا ق ل إ ن ك نت م ت ح ب ون هللا ف س و ف ي أ ت ي هللا ب ق و م ي ح ب ه م و ي ح ب ون ه Allah will soon bring forth a people whom He loves and they love Him. 8 ي ح ب ال ذ ين ي ق ات ل ون ف ي س ب يل ه ص ف ا ك أ ن ه م ب ني ان م ر ص وص إ ن هللا Verily, Allah loves those who fight in His path in ranks, as if they were a firm structure. (61:4) He is the Forgiving, the Loving. (85:14) و ه و ال غ ف ور ال و د ود صفة الرحمة Attribute of mercy And His saying, In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful. (1:1) و ق و ل ه بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم ر ب ن ا و س ع ت ك ل ش ي ء ر ح م ة و ع ل ما Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge. (40:7) He is ever merciful to the believers. (35:43) My mercy surrounds all things. (7:156) Your Lord has prescribed mercy for Himself. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. (10:107) و ك ان ب ال م ؤ م ن ين ر ح يما و ر ح م ت ي و س ع ت ك ل ش ي ء ك ت ب ر ب ك م ع ل ى ن ف س ه الر ح م ة و ه و ال غ ف ور الر ح يم ف اهلل خ ي ر ح اف ظ ا و ه و أ ر ح م الر اح م ي ن Thus, Allah is the best of guardians and He is the most merciful of those who show mercy. 9 صفة الرضى Attribute of pleasure و ق و ل ه ر ض ي هللا ع ن ه م و ر ض وا ع ن ه And His saying, Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. (5:119) صفات الغضب والسخط والكراهية والبغض Attributes of anger, displeasure, disapproval, and hatred و ق و ل ه و م ن ي ق ت ل م ؤ م نا م ت ع م دا ف ج ز آؤ ه ج ه ن م خ ال دا ف يه ا و غ ض ب هللا ع ل ي ه و ل ع ن ه And His saying, Whoever deliberately kills a believer, then his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and Allah is angry with him and has cursed him. (4:93) و ك ر ه وا ر ض و ان ه ذ ل ك ب أ ن ه م ات ب ع وا م ا أ س خ ط هللا That is because they followed what displeased Allah and they hated His pleasure. (47:28) So when they angered Us, We took retribution from them. (43:55) Rather, Allah disliked them being sent, so He held them back. (9:46) ف ل م ا آس ف ون ا انت ق م ن ا م ن ه م و ل ك ن ك ر ه هللا انب ع اث ه م ف ث ب ط ه م ك ب ر مق تا عند هللا أن تق ول وا م ا ل ت ف ع ل ون Greatly detested in the sight of Allah is that you say what you do not do. 10 صفتي المجيء واإلتيان Attribute of coming و ق و ل ه ه ل ي نظ ر ون إ ل أ ن ي أ ت ي ه م هللا ف ي ظ ل ل م ن ال غ م ام و ال م آلئ ك ة و ق ض ي ا ل م ر And His saying, Are they waiting for Allah to come to them in the shade of the clouds, or the angels, and the matter would be settled? (2:210) ه ل ي نظ ر ون إ ل أ ن ت أ ت يه م ال م آلئ ك ة أ و ي أ ت ي ر ب ك أ و ي أ ت ي ب ع ض آي ات رب ك Are they waiting for the angels to come, or for your Lord to come, or for some of the signs of your Lord? (6:158) ك ل إ ذ ا د ك ت ا ل ر ض د ك ا د ك ا و ج اء ر ب ك و ال م ل ك ص ف ا ص ف ا Nay, when the earth has been pounded with a great pounding and your Lord and the angels come row upon row. (89:21-22) و ي و م ت ش ق ق الس م اء ب ال غ م ام و ن ز ل ال م لئ ك ة ت نز ي ل And the Day the heavens will break open with clouds and the angels descend, one after another. (25:25) صفة الوجه هلل سبحانه Attribute of the face of Allah, glory be to Him و ق و ل ه و ي ب ق ى و ج ه ر ب ك ذ وا ل ج لل و اإل ك ر ا م And His saying, The face of your Lord will remain, possessor of majesty and honor. 11 إثبات اليدين هلل تعالى Affirming the hands of Allah the Exalted و ق و ل ه م ا م ن ع ك أ ن ت س ج د ل م ا خ ل ق ت ب ي د ي And His saying, What stopped you from prostrating to what I created with My own hands? (38:75) و ق ال ت ال ي ه ود ي د هللا م غ ل ول ة غ ل ت أ ي د يه م و ل ع ن وا ب م ا ق ال وا ب ل ي د اه م ب س وط ت ان ي نف ق ك ي ف ي ش اء The Jews say the hand of Allah is tied. It is their hands which are tied and they are cursed for what they have said. Rather, His hands are outspread, spending as He wills. (5:64) إثبات العينين هلل تعالى Affirming the eyes of Allah the Exalted و ق ول ه و اص ب ر ل ح ك م ر ب ك ف إ ن ك ب أ ع ي ن ن ا And His saying, Be patient with the judgment of your Lord, for you are under Our eyes. (52:48) و ح م ل ن اه ع ل ى ذ ات أ ل و اح و د س ر ت ج ر ي ب أ ع ي ن ن ا ج ز اء ل م ن ك ان ك ف ر We carried him on planks and nails, sailing under Our eyes as a recompense for him who was denied. (54:13-14) و أ ل ق ي ت ع ل ي ك م ح ب ة م ن ي و ل ت ص ن ع ع ل ى ع ي ن ي I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye. (20:39) abuaminaelias.com 11

12 صفتي السمع والبصر هلل تعالى Attributes of hearing and seeing of Allah the Exalted س م يع ب ص ي ر و ق و ل ه ق د س م ع هللا ق و ل ال ت ي ت ج اد ل ك ف ي ز و جه ا و ت ش ت ك ي إ ل ى هللا و هللا ي س م ع ت ح او ر ك م ا إ ن هللا And His saying, Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. Allah hears your dialogue, for Allah is hearing and seeing. (58:1) ف ق ير و ن ح ن أ غ ن ي اء ل ق د س م ع هللا ق و ل ال ذ ين ق ال وا إ ن هللا Allah has heard the word of those who say Allah is poor, yet We are rich. (3:181) و ق و ل ه أ م ي ح س ب ون أ ن ا ل ن س م ع س ر ه م و ن ج و اه م ب ل ى و ر س ل ن ا ل د ي ه م ي ك ت ب و ن Or do they think that We do not hear their secrets and private conversations? Nay, our messengers are with them recording. (43:80) Verily, I am with you both. I hear and I see. (20:46) Does he not know that Allah sees? (96:14) إ ن ن ي م ع ك م ا أ س م ع و أ ر ى ي ر ى أ ل م ي ع ل م ب أ ن هللا ال ذ ي ي ر اك ح ين ت ق وم و ت ق ل ب ك ف ي الس اج د ين إ ن ه ه و الس م يع ال ع ل يم He who sees you when you stand and you turn in prostration. Verily, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (26:217) و ق ل اع م ل وا ف س ي ر ى هللا ع م ل ك م و ر س ول ه و ال م ؤ م ن ون And say: Work as you wish, for Allah will see your deeds, as will His messenger and the believers. 13 صفات المكر والكيد والم حال هلل تعالى على ما يليق بجالله Attributes of planning, plotting, and contravince as befitting His Majesty و ق و ل ه و ه و ش د يد ال م ح ال And His saying, He is severe in contrivance. (13:13) و م ك ر وا و م ك ر هللا و هللا خ ي ر ال م اك ر ي ن They planned and Allah planned, and Allah is the best of planners. (3:54) و ق و ل ه و م ك ر وا م ك را و م ك ر ن ا م ك را و ه م ل ي ش ع ر و ن They prepared a plan and We prepared a plan, while they did not perceive it. (27:50) و ق و ل ه إ ن ه م ي ك يد ون ك ي دا و أ ك يد ك ي دا Verily, they plotted a great plot and I plotted a great plot. Do you know of anything similar to Him? (19:65) And there is nothing comparable to Him. (112:4) So do not make partners with Allah while you know. (2:165) و ق ل ال ح م د هلل ال ذ ي ل م ي ت خ ذ و ل دا و ل م ي ك ن ل ه ش ر يك ف ي ال م ل ك و ل م ي ك ن ل ه و ل ي م ن الذ ل و ك ب ر ه ت ك ب يرا Say: All praise is due to Allah, who has not taken a son and has no partner in the dominion, who needs no guardian due to weakness, so exalt Him with great exaltation. 15 ت ب ار ك ال ذ ي ن ز ل ال ف ر ق ان ع ل ى ع ب د ه ل ي ك ون ل ل ع ال م ين ن ذ يرا ال ذ ي ل ه م ل ك الس م او ات و ا ل ر ض و ل م ي ت خ ذ و ل دا و ل م ي ك ن ل ه ش ر يك ف ي ال م ل ك و خ ل ق ك ل ش ي ء ف ق د ر ه ت ق د يرا Blessed is He who revealed the Criterion (the Quran) upon His servant that he would warn the worlds, He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and has not taken a son and has no partner in the dominion. He has created all things and measured them with precise measurement. If so, each god would have taken what it created and some would have surpassed others. Glory be to Allah above what they describe. Knower of the Unseen and the seen, Exalted is He above what they associate. (23:91-92) ي ع ل م و أ نت م ل ت ع ل م و ن ف ل ت ض ر ب وا هلل ا ل م ث ال إ ن هللا So do not strike comparisons for Allah. Verily, Allah knows and you do not know. (27:74) ق ل إ ن م ا ح ر م ر ب ي ال ف و اح ش م ا ظ ه ر م ن ه ا و م ا ب ط ن و اإل ث م و ال ب غ ي ب غ ي ر ال ح ق و أ ن ت ش ر ك وا ب اهلل م ا ل م ي ن ز ل ب ه س ل ط انا و أ ن ت ق ول و ا ع ل ى هللا م ا ل ت ع ل م ون Say: My Lord has only forbidden immoralities, what is public of them and what is private, and sin, transgression without right, that you associate with Allah that to which He has not delegated authority, and that you say about Allah what you do not know. (7:33) استواء هللا على عرشه Rising of Allah above His Throne و ق و ل ه الر ح م ن ع ل ى ال ع ر ش اس ت و ى And His saying, The Merciful rose above the Throne. 16 إثبات علو هللا على مخلوقاته Afirming the highness of Allah over His creatures And His saying, O Jesus, I will take you and raise you unto Me. (3:55) Rather, Allah raised him unto Himself. Or do you feel secure from He who is in the heavens that He might rain stones upon you? You will soon know how was the warning! 17 is with them wherever they are. Then, He will inform them of what they did on the Day of Resurrection. Verily, Allah knows all things. (58:7) Do not grieve, for Allah is with us. (9:40) I am with you both, I hear and I see. (2:253) When Moses came at Our appointed time, his Lord spoke to him. (7:22) و ي و م ي ن اد يه م ف ي ق ول م اذ ا أ ج ب ت م ال م ر س ل ين The Day He will call them, saying: What was your answer to the messengers? (28:65) و إ ن أ ح د م ن ال م ش ر ك ين اس ت ج ار ك ف أ ج ر ه ح ت ى ي س م ع ك ل م هللا If one of the idolaters seeks your protection, then grant him protection that he might hear the word of Allah. (9:6) و ق د ك ان ف ر يق م ن ه م ي س م ع ون ك ل م هللا ث م ي ح ر ف ون ه م ن ب ع د م ا ع ق ل وه و ه م ي ع ل م و ن A sect among them had heard the word of Allah, then they distorted it after understanding it while they knew. 19 و ات ل م ا أ وح ي إ ل ي ك م ن ك ت اب ر ب ك ل م ب د ل ل ك ل م ات ه Recite what has been revealed to you from the book of your Lord. There is none to change His words. (18:27) إ ن ه ذ ا ال ق ر آن ي ق ص ع ل ى ب ن ي إ س ر ائ يل أ ك ث ر ال ذ ي ه م ف يه ي خ ت ل ف ون Verily, this Quran narrates to the children of Israel most of that over which they disagree. (59:12) و إ ذ ا ب د ل ن ا آي ة م ك ان آي ة و هللا أ ع ل م ب م ا ي ن ز ل ق ال وا إ ن م ا أ نت م ف ت ر ب ل أ ك ث ر ه م ل ي عل م ون ق ل ن ز ل ه ر وح ال ق د س م ن ر ب ك ب ال ح ق ل ي ث ب ت ال ذ ين آم ن وا و ه دى و ب ش ر ى ل ل م س ل م ين و ل ق د ن ع ل م أ ن ه م ي ق ول ون إ ن م ا ي ع ل م ه ب ش ر ل س ان ال ذ ي ي ل ح د ون إ ل ي ه أ ع ج م ي و ه ذ ا ل س ان ع ر ب ي م ب ين When we replace a verse in place of another, and Allah knows best what He has revealed, they say: Indeed, you are a fabricator! Rather, most of them do not know. Say: It has been sent down by the Holy Spirit from your Lord in truth, to make firm those with faith and as guidance and glad tidings for the Muslims. We know that they say: Indeed, he has been taught by a man! Yet the tongue of the one they speak of is foreign, while this is in a clear Arabic language. (16: ) إثبات رؤية المؤمنين لربهم يوم القيامة Affirming the looking of the believers at their Lord on the Day of Resurrection و ق و ل ه و ج وه ي و م ئ ذ ن اض ر ة إ ل ى ر ب ه ا ن اظ ر ة And His saying, Faces on that Day will be radiant, looking at their Lord. Who is asking Me that I might give? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him? He looks at you continuing to despair, so He continues to laugh knowing that relief is coming soon. It is a fair tradition. في إثبات الرجل أو القدم Affirming the leg or foot of Allah و ق و ل ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم ل ت ز ا ل ج ه ن م ي ل ق ى ف يه ا و ه ي ت ق و ل: ه ل م ن م ز يد ح ت ى ي ض ع ر ب ال ع ز ة ف يه ا ر ج ل ه و ف ي ر و اي ة ع ل ي ه ا ق د م ه ف ي ن ز و ي ب ع ض ه ا إل ى ب ع ض ف ت ق و ل ق ط ق ط م ت ف ق ع ل ي ه. And his saying, peace and blessings be upon him, Hell will continue to be filled and will say: Are there any more? Until the Lord of honor places His leg (and in another narration: His foot) over it and some of its parts retreat from each other and it says: Enough! Enough! It is agreed upon. في إثبات الكالم والصوت Affirming the speech and voice of Allah و ق و ل ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي ق ول ت ع ال ى ي ا آد م ف ي ق و ل ل ب ي ك و س ع د ي ك ف ي ن اد ي ب ص و ت إ ن هللا ي أ م ر ك أ ن ت خ ر ج م ن ذ ر ي ت ك ب ع ثا إل ى الن ار م ت فق ع ل ي ه And his saying, peace and blessings be upon him, Allah the Exalted will say: O Adam! Adam will say: I am here at Your pleasure. A raised voice will call out: Verily, Allah commands you to send a group of your progeny to the Hellfire. It is agreed upon. و ق و ل ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم م ا م ن ك م م ن أ ح د إ ل س ي ك ل م ه ر به و ل ي س ب ي ن ه و ب ي ن ه ت ر ج م ا ن And his saying, peace and blessings be upon him, There is none among you but that his Lord will speak to him without any translator between them. Holy is Your name, Your command is in the heavens and on the earth. As Your mercy is in the heavens, place Your mercy upon the earth. Forgive our mistakes and our sins. You are the Lord of all who are good. Send down mercy from Your mercy, healing from Your healing, upon this pain that it might pass. It is a fair tradition narrated by Abu Dawud and others. و ق و ل ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ل ت أ م ن ون ي و أ ن ا أ م ين م ن ف ي الس م اء ح د يث ص ح ي ح And his saying, peace and blessings be upon him, Will you not trust me while I am trusted by Him in the heavens? It is an authentic tradition. و ق و ل ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم و ال ع ر ش ف و ق ال م اء و هللا ف و ق ال ع ر ش و ه و ي ع ل م م ا أ ن ت م ع ل ي ه ح د يث ح س ن ر و اه أ ب و د او د و غ ي ر ه And his saying, peace and blessings be upon him, The Throne was above water, and Allah is above the Throne. He knows what you do. It is a fair tradition narrated by Abu Dawud and others. و ق و ل ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم ل ل ج ار ي ة أ ي ن هللا ق ال ت ف ي الس م ا ء ق ا ل م ن أ ن ا ق ال ت أ ن ت ر س ول هللا ق ا ل أ ع ت ق ه ا ف إ ن ه ا م ؤ م ن ة ر و اه م س ل م And his saying, peace and blessings be upon him, to the slave girl, Where is Allah? She said, In the heavens. He said, Who am I? She said, You are the Messenger of Allah. He said, Free her, for she is a believer. Rather, let him spit to his left or beneath his feet. You will have no difficulty seeing Him. If you are able to avoid missing a prayer before sunrise and before sunset, then do so. And He, glory be to Him, is with them wherever they are. He knows what they do, as this is all mentioned in His saying, It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then He rose above the Throne. He knows what enters the earth and what comes out from it and what descends from the sky and what ascends therein. He is with you wherever you are, for Allah sees what you are doing. (57:4) و ل ي س م ع ن ى ق و ل ه أ ن ه م خ ت ل ط ب ال خ ل ق ف إ ن ه ذ ا ل ت وج ب ه الل غ ة ب ل ا لق م ر آي ة م ن آي ات هللا م ن أ ص غ ر م خل وق ات ه و ه و م و ض وع ف ي الس م اء و ه و م ع ال م س اف ر و غ ي ر ال م س اف ر أ ي ن م ا ك ان His saying, He is with you, does not mean that He is mingling within the Creation, for this is not what is necessitated by the language. It is placed in the heavens and it is with the traveler or resident wherever they are. و ه و س ب ح ان ه ف و ق ع ر ش ه ر ق يب ع ل ى خ ل ق ه م ه ي م ن ع ل ي ه م م ط ل ع ع ل ي ه م إ ل ى غ ي ر ذ ل ك م ن م ع ان ي ر ب وب ي ت ه و ك ل ه ذ ا ال ك لم ال ذ ي ذ ك ر ه هللا م ن أ ن ه ف و ق ال ع ر ش و أ ن ه م ع ن ا ح ق ع ل ى ح ق يق ت ه And He, glory be to Him, is above His Throne, observing His creation, guarding over them, and aware of them, including other features of His Lordship. All of this discourse, which Allah mentioned, such that He is above the Throne and that He is with us, is true in its reality. ل ي ح ت اج إ ل ى ت ح ر يف و ل ك ن ي ص ان ع ن الظ ن ون ال ك اذ ب ة م ث ل أ ن ي ظ ن أ ن ظ اه ر ق و ل ه ف ي الس م اء أ ن الس م اء ت ظ ل ه أ و ت ق ل ه و ه ذ ا ب اط ل ب إ ج م اع أ ه ل ال ع ل م و اإل يم ان It is in no need of distortion. Rather, it should be preserved against false speculation, such as one who speculates that the literal meaning of His saying, In the heavens, is that the heavens contain Him or limit Him. This is false according to the consensus of the people of knowledge and faith. ف إن هللا ق د و س ع ك ر س ي ه الس م و ات و ا ل ر ض و ه و ي م س ك الس م و ات و ا ل ر ض أ ن ت ز و ل و ي م س ك ب إ ذ ن ه و م ن آي ات ه أ ن ت ق وم الس م اء و ا ل ر ض ب أ م ر ه الس م اء أ ن ت ق ع ع ل ى ا ل ر ض إ ل For the footstool of Allah extends over the heavens and the earth. He keeps the heavens and the earth from passing away and He keeps the heavens from falling to the earth. Among His signs are that the heavens and the earth are sustained by His command. يدخل في اإليمان باهلل أن ه قريب من خلقه Part of faith in Allah is that He is near to His creation و ق د د خ ل ف ي ذ ل ك اإل يم ان ب أ ن ه ق ر يب م ج يب ك م ا ج م ع بين ذ ل ك في ق و ل ه و إ ذ ا س أ ل ك ع ب اد ي ع ن ي ف إ ن ي ق ر ي ب و ق و ل ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم إ ن ال ذ ي ت د ع ون ه أ ق ر ب إ ل ى أ ح د ك م م ن ع نق ر اح ل ت و م ا ذ ك ر ف ي ال ك ت اب و الس ن ة م ن ق ر ب ه و م ع ي ت ه ل ي ن اف ي م ا ذ ك ر م ن ع ل و ه و ف و ق ي ت ه ف إ ن ه س ب ح ان ه ل ي س ك م ث ل ه ش ي ء ف ي ج م يع ن ع وت ه و ه و ع ل ي ف ي د ن و ه ق ر يب ف ي ع ل و ه Included in all of that is faith in His nearness and answering supplications, as all this is mentioned in His saying, If My servants ask you about me, then verily I am near, (2:186). And his saying, peace and blessings be upon him, Verily, He whom you call upon is closer to you than the neck of your riding animal. And what is mentioned in the Book and the Sunnah of His nearness and His omnipresence do not negate what we mentioned of His highness and transcendence. For He, glory be to Him, is not like anything else in all of His qualities. He is exalted in His proximity and near in His transcendence. abuaminaelias.com 27

28 اإليمان بأن القرآن كالم هللا منز ل غير مخلوق Faith in the Quran as the revealed, uncreated Speech of Allah و م ن اإل يم ان باهلل و ك ت ب ه اإليمان ب أ ن ال ق ر آن ك لم هللا م ن ز ل غ ي ر م خ ل وق م ن ه ب د أ و إ ل ي ه ي ع ود و أ ن هللا ت ك ل م ب ه ح ق يق ة وأ ن ه ذ ا ال ق ر آن ال ذ ي أ ن ز ل ه ع ل ى م ح م د صلى هللا عليه وسلم ه و ك لم هللا ح ق يق ة ل ك لم غ ي ر ه Part of faith in Allah and His books is faith that the Quran is the word of Allah, revealed and uncreated. It originated from Him and to Him it will return. And that Allah speaking it is reality, and that this Quran which was revealed to Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is the word of Allah in reality, not the speech of anyone else. و ل ي ج وز إ ط لق ال ق و ل ب أ ن ه ح ك اي ة ع ن ك ل م هللا أ و ع ب ار ة ب ل إ ذ ا ق ر أ ه الن اس أ و ك ت ب وه ف ي ال م ص اح ف ل م ي خ ر ج ب ذ ل ك ع ن أ ن ي ك ون ك لم هللا ت ع ال ى ح ق يق ة ف إ ن ال ك ل م إ ن م ا ي ض اف ح ق يق ة إ ل ى م ن ق ال ه م ب ت د ئا ل إل ى م ن ق ال ه م ب ل غا م ؤ د يا It is not permissible to claim it is an allegory of the of the word of Allah, or an expression of it. Rather, if people read it or write it in the scriptural copy (al-mus h af), that does not exclude it from being the word of Allah the Exalted in reality, for speech is only attributed in reality to whoever said it first and not to the one who later announced it or declared it. و ه و ك لم هللا ح ر وف ه وم ع ان يه ل ي س ك لم هللا ال ح ر وف د ون ال م ع ان ي و ل ال م ع ان ي د ون ال ح ر وف It is the speech of Allah, its letters and its meaning. The speech of Allah is not letters without meaning, nor meaning without letters. اإليمان بأن المؤمنين يرون ربهم يوم القيامة Faith that the believers will see their Lord on the Day of Resurrection و ق د د خ ل أي ضا ف يم ا ذ ك ر ن اه م ن اإل يم ان ب ه و ب ك ت ب ه و ب م ل ئ ك ت ه و ب ر س ل ه اإليم ان ب أ ن ال م ؤ م ن ين ي ر و ن ه ي و م ال ق ي ام ة ع ي انا ب أ ب ص ار ه م ك م ا ي ر و ن الش م س ص ح وا ل ي س ب ه ا س ح اب و ك م ا ي ر و ن ال ق م ر ل ي ل ة ال ب د ر ل ي ض ام ون ف ي ر ؤ ي ت ه ي ر و ن ه س ب ح ا نه و ه م ف ي ع ر ص ا ت ال ق ي ام ة ث م ي ر و ن ه ب ع د د خ ول ال ج ن ة ك م ا ي ش اء هللا ت ع ال ى Included also in what we mentioned of faith in Him, His books, His angels, and His messengers, is faith that the believers will see Him on the Day of Resurrection with the vision of their eyes, just as they see the sun on a clear day without clouds. Just as they see the full moon at night, they will have no difficulty in seeing Him. 29 اإليمان ب ك ل ما أخبر به النبي صلى هللا عليه وسلم م م ا يكون ب ع د الم وت Faith in everything the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, reported of what occurs after death و م ن اإل يم ان ب ال ي و م ا لخ ر اإليم ان ب ك ل م ا أ خ ب ر ب ه الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم م م ا ي ك ون ب ع د ال م و ت ف ي ؤ م ن ون ب ف ت ن ة ال ق ب ر و ب ع ذ اب ال ق ب ر و ن ع يم ه ف أ م ا ال ف ت ن ة ف إ ن الن اس ي م ت ح ن ون ف ي ق ب ور ه م ف ي ق ال للر ج ل م ن ر ب ك و م ا د ين ك و م ن ن ب ي ك Part of faith in the Last Day is to have faith in everything reported by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, of what comes after death, so they believe in the trials of the grave, in the punishment of the grave and its blessings. As for the trial, people will be interrogated in their graves. It will be said to a man, Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet? في ث ب ت هللا ال ذ ين آم ن وا ب ال ق و ل الث اب ت ف ي ال ح ي اة الد ن ي ا و ف ي ا لخ ر ة ف ي ق ول ال مؤ م ن ر ب ي هللا واإل س ل م د ين ي و م ح م د صلى هللا عليه وسلم ن ب ي ي و أ م ا ال م ر ت اب ف ي ق و ل ه اه ه اه ل أ د ري س م ع ت الن اس ي ق ول ون ش ي ئا ف ق ل ت ه ف ي ض ر ب ب م ر ز بة م ن ح د يد ف ي ص يح ص ي ح ة ي س م ع ه ا ك ل ش ي ء إ ل اإل ن س ان و ل و س م ع ه ا اإل ن س ان ل ص ع ق Allah will keep firm those who had faith in the unshakable word in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. The believer will say, My Lord is Allah, Islam is my religion, and Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is my prophet. As for one who doubted, he will say, Oh oh! I do not know! I heard people saying something so I said it! Then he will be struck with an iron bar and he will scream. It will be heard by everything except human beings, for if they heard it, they would faint. القيامة الكبرى وأهوالها The Greater Resurrection and its horrors ث م ب ع د ه ذ ه ال ف ت ن ة إم ا ن ع يم و إ م ا ع ذ اب إ ل ى أ ن ت ق وم ال ق ي ام ة ال ك ب رى ف ت ع اد ا ل ر و اح إ ل ى ا لج س ا د Then after this trial, whether it is blessed or whether it is punishment, the Greater Resurrection will be established and the souls will return to their bodies. و ت ق وم ال ق ي ام ة ال ت ي أ خ ب ر هللا ب ه ا ف ي ك ت اب ه و ع ل ى ل س ان ر س ول ه صلى هللا عليه وسلم و أ ج م ع ع ل ي ه ا ال م س ل م و ن ف ي ق و م الن اس م ن ق ب ور ه م ل ر ب ال ع ال م ين ح ف اة ع ر اة غ ر ل و ت د ن و م ن ه م الش م س و ي ل ج م ه م ال ع ر ق ف ت ن ص ب ال م و از ين ف ت وز ن ب ه ا أ ع م ال ال ع ب اد ف م ن ث ق ل ت م و از ين ه ف أ و ل ئ ك ه م ال م ف ل ح ون و م ن خ ف ت م و از ين ه ف أ و ل ئ ك ال ذ ين خ س ر وا أ نف س ه م ف ي ج ه ن م خ ال د و ن The Resurrection will be established, which Allah conveyed in His book and on the tongue of His messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and over which the Muslims have a consensus. People will rise from their graves in front of their Lord barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised. The sun will draw near to them and sweat will pour over them.
