2 Executive Officer Lt/C Jeffrey Short, P Onboard fires are one of the two most common reasons boaters are forced to abandon ship (other than the obvious one of having your boat sink). Fire extinguishers protect you, but most boaters tend to ignore them. What are the three most common types of fire on a boat? Class A fires leave an ash all combustible solid materials, such as paper, wood, cloth, rubber, and many plastics including the fiberglass reinforced plastic used for decks and hulls. Class B fires boil all flammable liquids, including stove alcohol, grease, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, oil, oil based paint, teak oil, paint thinners, acetone, varnishes, and flammable gases or fumes. Class C fires involve a charge all energized electrical equipment. Class C fires are identified for their potential to electrocute or shock a person if you apply electrically conducting water-based extinguishing agents. Question: Quick! if you have an electrical fire (Class C) on your boat, what MUST you do in order to put the fire out with your fire extinguisher? Answer: You MUST turn off the electricity! Even if you have the correctly rated fire extinguisher for an electrical fire (Class C) and even if it is large enough to last long enough to cover the entire base of the flames, it will NOT go out until you turn off the power. Turning off the electricity is the top priority when fighting a Class C fire. Usually you can turn off the main battery switch. Safe and effective circuit protection is likewise crucial for preventing Class C fires. Cutting the power will change the status of a Class C fire to a Class A and/or B fire. Depending on the size of our boat, the Coast Guard requires that you have a minimum number and size of fire extinguishers mounted on your boat: Up to 26': One B-I size extinguisher. Fire extinguishers are not required on outboard-powered pleasure boats less than 26' in length, not carrying passengers for hire, without permanently-installed fuel tanks, that do not have spaces where explosive or flammable gasses or vapors can collect. From 26' to 40': Two B-I extinguishers (or one B-II extinguisher) From 40' to 65': three B-I extinguishers (or one B-I and one B-II) These are the minimum requirements. It is advisable to have an extinguisher mounted and easily accessible in every cabin to allow an occupant to fight their way out if needed. ASPS is featuring District 5 s own BullEx fire extinguisher trainer at the USPS booth at the Annapolis Boat Shows this year. You definitely need to stop by the booth and try it out. You are guaranteed to learn something from this training aid. The training takes only a few minutes and covers all three classes of fires likely to occur on your boat. You will see that it takes longer to put out a fire than you ever thought. You also will be surprised how very quickly the average fire extinguisher runs out and leaves you standing there with an empty canister. This is a great learning opportunity! Better yet, volunteer for a shift at the boat show teaching others how to use a fire extinguisher. Also discuss with them the importance of wearing their personal floatation devices (PFDs) and other safety issues. This is a great chance to spread the word about safe boating and to recruit new members to the ASPS and USPS squadrons in the district and across the nation. I hope to see you at the boat shows! 3 Administrative Officer Lt/C Gary P. Antonides, AP We can look back on a very active boating event season during the summer. We had rendezvous at St. Michaels and Herrington Harbor South, and raft-ups on the Severn (for the Blue Angels) and on Aberdeen Creek. They were all well organized by Noni and well attended. The Squadron cruise, due to unforeseen circumstances was the exception. Squadron Cruise Our Squadron cruise was a little later than usual this year, September It visited Knapp s Narrows, Cambridge, and Oxford, and the weather was great. Unfortunately, some of the participants got sick or had other emergencies, so there were only a handful of boats participating. These boats participated for some or all of the cruise: Wanderlust (Ron and Karen Ricketts), Phase Two (Judy and Ralph Michaelson), Sway (Sandrine and Joel Hilden and Ferderica Fico), Persistence (Gary Antonides), and Kaskazi (PurnellDelly and Julia La Joie). In Cambridge, where we planned to have our Commander s dinner, there were only three people on two boats (Persistence, Phase Two) and we had to cancel the dinner. Noni did a great job changing the arrangements as boats had to drop out, but we were all disappointed with our extremely bad luck. The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race The last boating event of the season will be the Schooner Race. The WOODWIND will take passengers to the start of the race on Thursday, October 13 th. See the flier in this issue of the for details. Crab Feast The crab feast has not taken place as this is written, but we are looking forward to a special event at the Bay Ridge Pool Clubhouse. Many thanks in advance to the Maszczenskis, Slatterys, Carol Rechner, Cupples, McGeehans, Lindenhalls, and Jonathan Jacobs for their excellent work in organizing the event. Member Dinner Meeting The next dinner meeting is October 6 th. Join us at the Elks Lodge in Edgewater. Social hour starts at 6, and dinner at 7. Our speaker will be Capt. Mike Schneider from the Liberty Ship SS John W. Brown. The John Brown is one of only two remaining operational Liberty Ships in the country. The other is in San Francisco. There are two entrees to choose from as well as a vegetarian option. Be sure to include your choice in the comments section of the online form or in your message on the hotline. The choices: 1. Stuffed Orange Roughy with Crab Imperial 2. Bone-in Stuffed Pork Chop 3. Veggie Marinara Penne Pasta The cutoff time for RSVPs is 4:00pm, October 4 (Tuesday) through our website at ASPSdinner or by calling ASPS Voic at , Option 4. Dinner Cost: $27/ per person, cash or check at the door. ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON 3

4 September Dinner Meeting By Georgiana Maszczenski, S Did you miss the September Annapolis Sail and Power Squadron dinner meeting? If you did, you missed the opportunity to meet and greet friends you might not have seen this summer. You missed some great tales of adventures on the water and trips on land. And, you missed the opportunity to listen and learn from our speaker. Although ASPS looks for speakers throughout our larger boating community, we do not neglect the talent and knowledge of our own membership. ASPS is very fortunate to have so many members interested in learning about and sharing information. Our September 1 meeting featured Terry Slattery sharing what he has learned about installing and using lithium batteries on a boat. Here is a sampling of the information he shared: Currently, you will most often find lithium batteries used on racing boats. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are safe for use on boats. One regular 4D lead acid battery weighs 131 pounds. The lithium battery weighs 52 pounds. Although lithium batteries are three times as expensive as lead acid batteries, they last four times as long. Looking for a new tool for your boat? An infrared thermometer is a great addition to your tool kit. Next time you see Terry at a meeting, ask him about the uses for this device! Michael Maszczenski, our SEO, talks with Commander Edie Chapman of Kent Narrows Sail and Power Squadron. Edie Chapman joined us for the September dinner meeting. At the end of the meeting, she was lucky enough to win our 50/50 drawing. Edie donated her winnings to our squadron. Thanks, Edie! If you are interested in reading more about lithium batteries, Terry has a list of resources he used for research. You can him at tcs@ccci.com to get his bibliography. Remember, our meetings offer more than just food. Our speakers always offer the opportunity to learn more about boats, boating, and the great waterways. And, don t hesitate to offer yourself as a speaker if you have something to share. Join us and see for yourself at our next meeting. We hope to see you on October 6 th.
