2 SCYC wins US Sailing Award! We are proud to announce Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club was honored with The Captain Joe Prosser Award at the 2017 US Sailing Awards ceremony! SCYC's Sailing Director, Tomas Ruiz de Luque represented SCYC to receive the award at the Sailing Leadership Forum in St. Pete Beach, Florida, hosted by the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort on Thursday, February 1st, US Sailing Press Release "The Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) was honored with the Captain Joe Prosser Award for their exemplary contribution toward improving the quality and safety in the training or instruction of sailors. Seawanhaka has a strong reputation for providing high quality training programs to junior sailors. Founded in 1871, SCYC has consistently placed a premium on seamanship education, viewing it as a one of the main objectives for any member. While much of their success has come through competitive endeavors, the emphasis that they ve placed on developing life-long sailors of all interests is what set them apart. They run a multi-level youth program that is facilitated by talented coaches and supported by dedicated group of volunteers. In looking at the history of the Junior Sailing program, located on the Club s website, you will find the following passage: While some of our Juniors have triumphed in reaching the top level of competitive sailing, there are countless more who have never won a regatta, or even aspired to. These are the members who develop a love of sailing, crew on parents and members boats and later become members and officers of the Senior Club. This unsung, quiet group of junior sailors are some of our most valuable graduates. Without them, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club would not be able to maintain its preeminent reputation in the world of sailing. Source: US SAILING website

Sailors must be competent swimmers and pass a swim check on the first day of sailing class. In addition, sailors must always wear appropriate footwear at all times and a personal floatation device (PFD) while on, in, or near the water, docks and beach. All sailors must have a US Coast Guard approved type III PFD. - CURRICULUM & STAFF - The Junior Activities Committee overseas all Junior Programs. Juniors Mates Program Directors are certified educators that lead a staff of counselors, sports specialists, an art director, and lifeguards. Head Sailing Instructors hold the highest level of US Sailing certification and lead a staff of certified level I and level II instructors and coaches. The priorities of our curriculum are development and instruction with emphasis on safety, fun and learning. All activities are designed to be age-appropriate and engaging. - LOCATION & FACILITIES - SCJYC is located on beautiful Centre Island in Oyster Bay, New York. The Junior Club is the center of activity, ideal for classroom instruction, games and other indoor activities. The Rendezvous Deck is home to the Junior Mates activities. Juniors also have use of the Club s private beach and tennis courts.

19 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - I am not a member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, but I would like my children to be part of the Seawanhaka Junior Summer Program, can non-members participate? Yes, you may participate in the SCJYC Program if you are not a member of SCYC. However, you must have a member sponsor you for the junior program. There is also an additional $145 annual non-member fee for all non-member children. For further inquires or an introduction contact juniorclub@seawanhaka.org Will the program be cancelled if there is inclement weather? We will always put safety first at SCJYC but we will not cancel for inclement weather. Staff routinely monitors radar for thunderstorms, and all coaches are qualified to run classes that maximize training value based on the conditions. Class is inside during thunderstorms, but we will sail in all other weather. Come prepared! What does my child need to bring to the summer program? Every day, sailors need to bring: closed-toed shoes (i.e. tennis shoes, Crocs, neoprene sailing boots) a US Coast Guard (USCG) approved life-jacket, i.e. Personal Flotation Device (PFD) sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle. It is also recommended that sailors bring a towel, snack, change of clothes. There's a good chance that sailors will get wet every day. Are classes prorated if I have to miss part of a session? No, classes will not be prorated. We are committed to employing the best available local and international coaches in order to offer our sailors the best quality of coaching. Once the summer begins we are committed to them regardless if sailors attend or not. Under these circumstances, we cannot justify prorating. Do you have a carpool set up? No. We cannot organize carpools, nor can we give out personal information of other families in the program. If you would like to carpool, our race team meetings, preseason midwinter soiree, junior commissioning and/or the first day of class are good opportunities to meet other parents. Can I stay and watch my child sail? Parents are always welcome to watch from a distance. Experience has shown that most young sailors learn best without the distraction of a parent nearby. All of our coaches are trained to run safe and fun classes and appreciate your cooperation with this. Please contact the Sailing Director, Tomas Ruiz de Luque-TRuiz@seawanhaka.org if you have any questions. I lost my Did you find it? We have a lost and found bin near the entrance to the bathrooms. Please label everything very clearly with your name and phone number. With more than 100 Junior Sailors participating in our annual program, our lost and found is usually very full by the end of the summer. Unclaimed items are donated to Goodwill or discarded at the end of each season. *for more FAQ, visit the Junior Sailing section of SCYC s website,
