1 Lake Charles Yacht Club The Tacking Times Newsletter JUNE 2014 THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE LAKE CHARLES YACHT CLUB Commodore s Corner Thanks to the juniors for very successful sailing lessons last week. About thirty people were introduced to the fun and excitement of sailing. Great comments were heard from the students who praised the instructors for being both thorough and patient. As usual, the lessons have brought new members to our club. The weekly Wednesday races are seeing good participation. Also, this weekend the lake was colorful as sailboats competed in the Flag Day Regatta. The race was joined by three larger boats as Scott Cesar and Bob Dilmore ran away from yours truly in our cruising boats. Thanks goes to the Unglaubes, who hosted their third annual Cheeseburgers in Paradise social. Fine food and great entertainment such as music, dancing and games were enjoyed by adults and children. Special kudos for the great rum punch! A short business meeting was held, where a motion was passed to reduce the initiation fee for participants in this years sailing lessons. A work party is being planned for July 26th to address some things needed for both the clubhouse and grounds. As details are developed, I encourage our members to volunteer for some of the work details. I wish fair winds and full sails to all. Members, the board approved this policy for hurricane season, READ and BE READY to take action once a hurricane enters the GULF and has any projected path to SW LA. NOTE that LCYC will tend your boat if you do not and will CHARGE YOU for the tending if needed. PROPOSED HURRICANE EVACUATION PLAN; ONCE a Hurricane enters the GULF and poses any threat to SW LA, all members must prepare their boats to either withstand the hurricane or be removed from the LCYC property. Owner must maintain his vessel in a state of readiness for movement in case of hurricane or other emergency evacuation. Owner will notify LCYC if propulsion machinery is inoperative and will remain so for more than 48 hours, and will advise of action being taken to restore machinery to operable condition. In an emergency, LCYC reserves the right, but not the responsibility, to take action necessary and prudent to safeguard Owner's vessel and adjacent vessel and property of LCYC. Owners agree to pay LCYC all charges for damages to LCYC property and services rendered on behalf of Owner and Owner's vessel in an emergency situation, to include charges for LCYC and materials and/or the costs of hiring a contractor to move or remove the vessel and to make any repairs required to make the vessel safe and free from defects which may endanger life, property or natural environment. 6 THE TACKING TIMES NEWSLETTER Page 6 Race to Prien Regatta May 24th The big event for me and others was a LARGE ship heading out to sea being assisted by two BIG tugboats. I think everyone has a story to tell about it. A boat passing like this causes an enormous turbulence field around it. In a relatively narrow channel this turbulence lasts a while. It takes a while to get any speed up again. I was in the channel by the casino and could use the extra width to tack going toward the bridge. Doss and I were both in this area and managed ok. John was at the bridge and had difficulties but also managed ok. Rice and Jones were just around the corner from the first set of docks and had trouble getting back into a sailing routine. They went back to the club. Everything turned out ok though. The multihull boats had already passed by this time. I was really amazed at the large number of boats of all kinds in the ship channel and the activity at the casino. I even saw one kayak out there. Quite a few people were enjoying the club. 7 THE TACKING TIMES NEWSLETTER Page 7 On the Lake Florida 120 David Sargent I completed the Florida 120 in Donna Renee'. It was a great time and met a lot of nice folks. I launched at Shoreline Park on Thursday morning and sailed east to Specter Island. Friday most of us sailed back west to Navarre Beach. Saturday's destination was Sand Island just west of Pensacola Pass. Sunday had us going back to Shoreline. There are more pictures on the Florida120 facebook page. Cheers, David Sargent

All were used on sailboats. All have tanks as part of the motor. 7 hp Sears: This is an older Sears motor. It is air cooled and is standard shaft length. It has a neutral clutch. (F and N) It is rough looking but runs fine. Two cycle. $300. The vent screw is messed up and doesn t seal very well. 2 hp Honda: This is an air cooled, 4 cycle, long shaft, and twist grip throttle motor with idle clutch. Rotate for reverse. This is a sweet little motor but I have a love/hate relationship with it. The fuel ports must be very tiny and clog up occasionally and must be sent to the shop for carburetor cleaning. Right now the motor runs but the choke must be on for the motor to run properly. Someone familiar with carb cleaning can probably take care of it. $ ½ hp Mercury: I bought this motor to use on my Mariner 19 to replace the Honda. I then sold the Mariner but the buyer didn t need a motor. This motor is long shaft, 4 cycle, twist grip throttle, F/N, rotate for reverse motor. It is practically unused. $900. 9 Board News THE TACKING TIMES NEWSLETTER An estimate was received and approved by the board to rent equipment to move the sand from the North side of the club to the south beach area. This is needed to restore the beach area on the south side of the club. The equipment is scheduled for all day on July 26th. Your help on this effort is needed and appreciated. Please make sure the pick up after yourself and put up boats and gear after use. Last Tuesday afternoon there was a Sunfish, un-rigged, on a dolly, on the beach at the waters edge. The nose of the boat was in the water and if the tide would have came in or water rose it may have floated off. Please put up gear and boats when finished using for others to enjoy. At the June 14th social and membership meeting, LCYC members passed a motion to allow those that completed sailing lessons the week of June 9, 2014, and wish to join LCYC a reduced initiation fee. The motion was to have a $100 initiation fee versus $300 that can be prorated with quarterly dues. The board is pursuing the installation of a rental ice machine to be used by club members. Thanks to those that helped repair the Sewer Pump. The board is pursuing estimates for the replacement of the wood deck on the 2nd floor of the clubhouse. The board is also reviewing options on painting the club house. The board member phone numbers are listed by the LCYC phone at the club house. Board Meetings are normally at the Club House on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm Page 9 Please Remember Lock the gate when you leave. Please clean the clubhouse after use Please do not leave the air conditioners running. If you took it out (boats, gear, sails, silverware, whatever), put it back. Pick up your trash and dispose of it in the garbage cans or the dumpster. For extra credit, you can pick up someone else s trash they left out If something on a club boat breaks, report it to a member of the Board or Ship to Shore so that repairs can be made
