1 Tell Tale Winter 2014 Upcoming Events February 22 Mardi Gras Party March 15- St. Patrick s Day Party 2013 Rose Regatta April 12- Crawfish Boil and Membership meeting Commodores Briefings Dues and Fees Increase May 3- Rush Hour Regatta / Cinco de Mayo Making changes to the fee structure of any organization can often be a difficult task. I want to thank everyone who contributed their input regarding the impending changes to the dues and fees for our club. After further discussion of our previously proposed changes from the Fall 2013 Tell Tale, we decided that those increases were too dramatic to implement right away. Therefore, beginning April, we will increase the membership dues, all slip fees, and dry storage fees by $5.00. We believe this is a reasonable increase and will provide us with some of the funds needed to continue the improvement projects we hope to accomplish soon. See the last page for full fee schedule. With these changes in mind we would like to make efforts to better organize and keep track of the boats and trailers that are being stored on the TYC grounds. There is a book in the club house with pictures of each trailer currently on the grounds of TYC. We would like to attempt to pair the trailer with the owner so that we can tag the trailer. If it needs to be moved for some reason we will then be able to contact the appropriate person to inform them. Please make an attempt to locate your trailer in the book. If you know you have a trailer but cannot get out to the club send an to: commodore@tyleryachtclub.org and I can send you the pictures via . I appreciate everyone s effort in making this happen! 2 Vice Commodore- Good ol Boys Club Vice Commode Cindy Bolding So, I ve heard it said that the Tyler Yacht Club is a hangout for guys. Although on the surface it could appear that way, nothing could be further from the truth. For starters, the board invited a woman to join them. For the first time in Tyler Yacht Club history a woman has been elected to the board. What could that mean? Do they need new curtains, decorations or someone to cook and clean up after them? Apparently not, look who they chose. I couldn t make curtains if I tried and some men are the best cooks. Were they so desperate to just fill the seat? Maybe, but upon joining them, all I heard from the members was how much they looked forward to having a woman on board. Although some gender generalities hold true, many do not. I thought I would take a lighthearted look at a few of the similarities and differences in what I like to call, A woman s view from the club. Bugs: Where bugs are concerned, women may be a slight bit more reactive than men. For instance, if a bug happens to land on someone s head during a board meeting, a man would either ignore it or mention it calmly to the person. Hey Bob, there is a mosquito on your head. A woman however, may jump from her seat, fly across the table and swat the bug dead as if she is saving a life. I call it problem solving. Sorry Bob and Steve. Women sail too: Did you know that we have women who sail? No, seriously, not just crew, but actually sail. They know the technical names for the thingamajigs and ropes and everything. They know how to head in to the wind and watch for puffs too. They may not join in all the races, but they are here. We also have women members that kayak. They come out to the club on their own, without a man and enjoy a water sport. Amazing! Now, some of our women members aren t interested in water activities, but they do enjoy the community social events. No matter the level of involvement, one truth remains, women are welcome. It s not a boys club. Communication tips for men and women sailing together: *Disclaimer: Do not read further if you are easily offended or argumentative. Men: Do not assume the woman on board knows points of sail and/or captain s commands. In fact, do not use the word command EVER and maybe not captain either! Women: Don t get your feelings hurt in the first or last few minutes of sailing. They are just focused. Men: Women do not respond well to quick orders barked aggressively. Women: Try not to be nervous when the boat heels. Men: Taking time to pack beverages and snacks is important. You will be Caption thankful describing once picture you or are graphic. on the water. 3 Harbor Master and Racing Harbor Master & Race Coordinator Steve Hancock Racing - The 2013 Fall Series closed out in December. It s a testament to the health of our racing program that we had 18 skippers compete in the series (about 25% of total membership) sailing in months when most clubs are huddled against the winter winds sipping Captain Morgan and arguing about some right-of-way controversy last July. The final results are posted below and on the racing page of the website. Our 2014 Winter Series got off to a strong start last Sunday with 9 boats braving the gusty January winds. Harbor Master- As many of you have noticed, the lake is the highest it s been since Spring of With the rising water, our ramp has become useable again for many boats. A C22 was successfully launched and retrieved last weekend. With luck, this spring the lake may make it to the spillway for the first time since July, As the lake returns to normal levels, we ll be working to get everyone back to their assigned slips in hopes that we ll all be able to stay there for a while.
