31 Ideas for reading Learning objectives: Track text in the right order; read high frequency words; use a variety of cues when reading; use terms fiction and non-fiction, noting differing features; ask and answer questions about why things happen and how they work. High frequency words: the, can, a, big, on, it, and Interest words: wind, blow, windmills, soft, strong Resources: flash cards (The, can, a, big, on, It, and) Word count: 82 Getting started Look at the title page together and read the title. Ask the children what happens in the playground when it is windy. Walk through the book up to p183, looking at the pictures. Ask the children whether this book is fiction or non-fiction and to explain how they can tell (e.g. use of photos). Ask them to read the flash cards and then point to these words in the book (The, can, a, big, on, It, and), drawing their attention to the capital letters in The and It. What helps them to read the words? (Looking for shape, initial sound, letters from their own names, repeated words). Reading and responding Ask the children to read the book aloud independently. Prompt and praise children s tracking of words in the right order. Remind the children to use a variety of cues for unfamiliar words (e.g. picture cues for windmills and sand, word within a word for into, repetitive pattern and initial sound for blow). Ask them to discuss how waves are made and what windmills are for. When you ve read the book, look at pp Ask the children what the pictures show. Check they understand what the chart is saying. Why is there an arrow? What other words could we use for soft or strong? Returning to the book Ask the children to read the whole book together again as a group. Discuss how they solved tricky words like down and dunes. Ask each child to point at and read one or two high frequency words in the book. Show the children the flash cards and ask them to read each word to check they can read it out of context. 200 G2_Volume_A.indb 200
32 Checking and moving on Ask the children to recap what they ve learnt about the wind, and how it affects things. Choose one child to answer questions. The rest of the group ask what the wind can do or make (e.g. blow windmills, make waves). Show the children how to make a simple windmill. What happens when you blow on it? What happens when you hold it in the wind? Ask the children to make a poster chart similar to pp showing what happens in the playground on a windy day. leaves blow trees bend hats blow off 201 G2_Volume_A.indb 201
