Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island SpraySkirt Kit Installation Instructions Copyright 2011 by R. E. & D. L. Conlon Kit Contains: Right & Left SpraySkirts 3 Long Black Wire Ties* 3 Short Black Wire Ties* 1 3/16 Anchor Shackle 2 - Small Loops of Line *only 2 of each are needed the others are spares Tools You May Need: Cutting Pliers (or scissors) Pliers(for tightening the wire ties) Phillips Head Screwdriver (for Option 2B) Silicone Adhesive (for Option 2B) To prevent the small parts from being lost or misplaced, the loops and wire ties are fastened together with a small wire. You ll need to cut open the fastened wire tie just be sure not to cut any parts! Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 1 of 8
Basic Instructions: These are the minimum installation instructions, and allow for quick removal of your sprayskirts. The Additional Installation Options are for a semi-permanent installation. First, take a look at a sprayskirt that has not been installed yet: The labels explain the points on the sprayskirts that are referred to throughout these instructions. 1. Remove anything from the TI, from the bow to the forward cockpit pockets (such as a bow line) that might be in the way when installing the sprayskirts. 2. Lock the akas and amas in place, as if you are ready to sail. 3. Determine which sprayskirt is the right side and which is the left side. The underside of the fabric is slightly smoother, and you can feel the raw edges of the fabric in the seams. The outside corner looks like this: 4. Lay the two halves right side up along the bow and stretch the bow loops out flat, with no twists in the line. Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 2 of 8
5. Unscrew the anchor shackle. Insert the loops of line from narrow edge of the sprayskirts through the anchor shackle. The sprayskirts should now be taut, but not under pressure. As shown above, the preferred placement is for the inside lines to exit the top of the anchor shackle make sure there are no twists in the lines. 6. Affix the anchor shackle to the bow metal pad eye and tighten securely. 7. Move back along the boat, sliding the sprayskirts under the akas. Hook the back corner loop of each sprayskirt over the eyelet post in the center of the each forward mesh pocket. 8. On both sides, pull the outside corner tab under the aka and around the aft side to hook the loop over the aka/ama pad eye. This wraps the line halfway around the aka and stretches the sprayskirt. This completes the Basic Installation of the Sprayskirts. Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 3 of 8
Additional Installation Options If you expect to use your boat in higher wind and waves, or wish to have a more permanent installation, also consider the following options. 3. Starboard (right) Side: Feed a long wire tie behind the bow (front) side of the sheet line pulley. Option 1 (recommended): Use 2 long wire ties. 1. Undo the outside corner tab to take the tension off the sprayskirt. 2. Port (left) Side: Under the aka crossbar, feed a wire tie through the sprayskirt fabric so you capture the line inside the wire tie. a. Feed the wire tie through the sprayskirt fabric so you capture the line inside the wire tie. a. Wrap the wire tie around the aka crossbar support and secure tightly. 4. Secure the wire tie so it holds the sprayskirt at the middle of the pulley so the sheetline does not rub on the sprayskirt, above or below. b. Use pliers if necessary to grab the end to tighten it. 5. Clip the excess wire tie ends. Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 4 of 8
Option 2a: For easier removal of the sprayskirts: 1. Unhitch the bungee on the front hatch. 4. Clip the loose wire tie ends. Re-attach the bungee. 2. In line with the hatch bungee hold, feed a short wire tie through the sprayskirt, capturing the line inside, and feed through the loop, and secure. Use pliers if necessary to grab the end to tighten it. Option 2b: This replaces Option 2a, for a semi-permanent installation of the sprayskirts, and this is how we do it in Hawaii. The silicone adhesive we prefer is DAP Auto/Marine Sealant 100% Silicone: 3. Place the loop over the hatch bungee hold. But, you can use what you prefer for the seal. This is used to seal any holes you need to make in the hull. 1. Disconnect the front hatch and set aside. Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 5 of 8
2. Unscrew the hatch bungee hold. 5. Place one of the included loops around the screw hole. Be sure to hold the underside to prevent the inside bungee hold from falling away. 3. Wipe the area with a rag or paper towel to clear away any debris. 6. Reattach the hatch bungee hold, screwing it in place until almost secure. 4. Apply a dab of sealant over the screw hole. 7. Tug on the loop to bring it tight toward the screw. 8. Continue to secure the screw tightly, but be sure not to over tighten there is no nut on the underside. Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 6 of 8
9. Feed a short wire tie through the sprayskirt, capturing the line. 10. Loop the wire tie around the knot (or through the loop) and pull to secure. A properly installed SpraySkirt will look like this: 11. Repeat on the other side of the boat. 12. Trim the loose wire tie ends. 13. Replace the front hatch and re-attach the bungees. Stowing the Sprayskirt for Storage If you are going to leave the Sprayskirts on the boat, you can stow them a couple different ways to keep them secured. Option 1: 1. Unhook the outside corner tab from the aka/ama pad eye. 2. Roll up the sprayskirt from the outside corner inward toward the boat, leaving all other attachments in place. 3. Unhook the front hatch bungee and loop it over the sprayskirt roll. Option 2: 1. Unhook the outside corner tab from the aka/ama pad eye. 2. Leave all other attachments in place. 3. Pull the outside corner tabs toward the mast cup, forward of the front aka cross bar. 4. Tie or clip the loops of the outside corners to the crossbar. We use our front Mirage Drive leash quick snap clip for this. Repeat on the other side. Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 7 of 8
Adjusting Tightness on your Sprayskirts After your first sail or two, all knots will tighten, and the lines may stretch slightly. You may need to tighten your lines at this point. Add a knot or two to the single line that goes to the Outside Corner Tab. Each knot will take up about 1/2 3/4 of slack. Questions, Missing Parts, Replacement Parts, Suggestions... If for some reason the fit still doesn t seem to be right, or any other questions or problems, please us at bob@kayakingbob.com for more help. Broken Wire Ties Wire ties are meant to break under excess stress. Replace them with a similar sized black (UV protected) wire tie. User Modifications Folding in the Ama Quick Release: If you often fold in your amas, such as you would when fishing, you ll need to modify your sprayskirts to allow them to release quickly. This is easily done by replacing the existing lines that go to the Outside Corner Tabs with longer (user supplied) lines. Tie a new line to the Outside Corner Loop, then bring it around the eyelet post on curve of the aka, then bring it back to the side of the hull. Install a jam cleat or Harken Cam Cleat on the gunwale to capture the line. The purple line in the photo below shows this option: Bungee: Some users have replaced the Outside Corner Lines with bungee so they didn t have to release their sprayskirts when folding in the amas. The bungees stretch when the amas are folded in. Kayaking Bob s Tandem Island Sprayskirt Kit Page 8 of 8
