We have completed the first KISS series of the season and the results are ready. The competition is fierce in both Spinnaker and Non-spinnaker Fleets. The races have had really good turnout and more boats are expected to join the racing fun for the upcoming KISS Series, Summer I, starting on Tuesday night. DAINGERFIELD ISLAND SAILING CLUB Washington Sailing Marina 1 Marina Drive Alexandria, Va The Mt. Vernon Chase Regatta was held Saturday, Cinco De Mayo. It was great to see all the boats out racing, which is challenging, especially knowing how much work goes into preparing your boats and finding available crew in the middle of a KISS series. Now we eagerly wait for the Sailors of the Sea to certify the regatta at the Participant level. The Mt. Vernon Chase Regatta got off to a slow start as boats headed under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and were redirected by Harbor Police to the center span due to a search being conducted for someone in the water. Later the person was rescued by a civilian boat, causing a few racers to get to the starting line late. Racers with their start times in hand headed to the start line in front of the National Harbor midchannel buoy, R90, at their assigned start time. The slowest rated Spin and Non-Spin boats started at 11:00. With a northerly breeze, boats in the Spinnaker fleet hoisted their kites at the start, the wind now blowing them south across the line. Faster boats were preparing behind them and at their assigned time hoisted their chutes and then took off. The Non-Spins were off racing on a course nearly 2 miles short of the 9 plus miles sailed by Spin boats. Dark Star, skippered by Doug Savage, barreled down on the spinnaker fleet from behind and was ahead of all of the boats in the class before rounding the down river mark. Doug and the Star managed to keep the lead. Although the wind shut down for a bit, it did not keep them from taking a bullet. Too Many Cooks sailed smoothly and was fast. She followed Dark Star around the course and ended the race in second place. Rio Mar was the next Spinnaker boat and managed to move into a strong 3 rd place position, except that all changed on the trip home. The wind shifted 180 degrees and the spinnakers went back up. Iris positioned in 4 th was catching up to Rio and giving a good chase looked like she would overtake her. At the finish Rio Mar and Iris went head to head. Rio Mar finished barely a foot ahead of Iris, which is all it took for 3 rd place. The rain held back and did not cause any problems. There was enough wind and sometimes light but was still enough to get everyone back to the cookout by 15:00 hours. Andy Shotwell planned and provided for the barbecue and Maria Brady was on hand to cook up some dogs and burgers. Continued page 3 Black Squirrel Iris 2

3 Commodore s Corner (continued from page 3) The trophies were handed out to the 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place finishes in both Spinnaker and Non- Spinnaker Fleets. 4 2018 coming up RACING Saturday, June 9th GEICO Cup 2018 brings us the 12th annual GEICO Cup, being held on Saturday, June 9 th. A great big thank you goes out to our event organizers, Karl and Janice Hobart, and our sponsor GEICO. Fun T-Shirts and Swag Bags for Skippers and Crew Every year this sponsored event brings some fun, excitement and swag bag items for each of the registered boat s Skippers and Crew. Karl and Janice organize this annual event and it always brings a smile to everyone. Very soon, Skippers will be asked to provide T-Shirt sizes for their crew. The Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions are being finalized and will be ready soon and will be available on the DISC website: After racing, an awards presentation for 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place will be held for both Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker boats.
