2 SUNSHINE BAY YACHT CLUB 30 YEARS OF CONT D FROM PAGE ONE "I look at those statistics from a different viewpoint," said current SBYC Commodore Neil Herbst. "While they might apply to the development of dinghy sailing, I don't think that applies to the fixed-keel sailing that's done at Wabamum Lake. The proof is in the pudding for this club. We have a two-year waiting list for membership, assuming a normal turnover of people either moving or retiring out-of-province or taking up other hobbies. People hear about us primarily by word of mouth and our club hasn't really been adversely affected by the most recent economic downturn. "Growth has really come from the enthusiasm of the members; a sense of camaraderie. "Plus, the location here is really lovely, with a sheltered bay and up-to-date facilities," said Herbst. "There's certainly been increased interest since the new clubhouse was finished in The club also tries to encourage families, and is in fact fixing up the old green clubhouse so kids can have a place to hang out. There's every effort to make this club family-friendly." Sailing has an undeserved reputation as being the domain of wealthy elites, but Herbst challenges that notion. "It is, in fact, very affordable. The average boat in this club dates to the mid-1980s. Fibreglass boats, if cared for, last a long time, so it's not terribly expensive to get into -- no more expensive than golf, by the time you factor in the cost of a golf membership and equipment. Most people start off with a smaller boat, get a feel for sailing, and then progress to something larger." Sailing can be as laid-back or as competitive as you want it to be, he said. "There's a good race program for anyone who's interested, and a friendly rivalry between this club and others on the lake." Our Commodores over the years...! 1981! John Hill 1882! John Hill 1983! New Classified Section In our upcoming newsletters we will feature a Classified Ad section where you can advertise sailing items for sale. Contact John Stobbe jstobbe@macrealty.com or Stuart Sherwin studads@gmail.com with your items for sale.
