1 Black Watch Sightings Record World Cruise (Sydney Southampton) Whales Dolphins, Porpoises and other Marine Ocean Life Robin Petch - TheWhaleandDolphinMan.co.uk What a marvellous adventure we all shared! It was a huge pleasure to share our deck watches, usually on Deck 7 Forward, with so many people. Thanks also to everyone who contributed sightings to this record, who shared stories, asked questions or attended my lectures. Between us, so many great sightings were recorded, and these are now re-published here and in the first Record for Southampton - Sydney. Colour photos now included!
2 Sightings Record 5/3/16 9/4/16 5/3/16 No sightings on sail-away from Sydney. 6/3/ Dolphins on starboard side Passengers Shearwaters hunting near the ship, lots of Flying Fish today! Bottlenose Dolphins approached the bow and swam along starboard side Robin 7/3/16 2 Dolphins surfacing off starboard bow, entering Brisbane River Passengers Kite and 5 Pied Cormorants seen in Brisbane River during sail-away Robin 8/3/ very stealthy Dolphins appeared briefly at the port bow Kris & Robin 1130 Dolphin tail spotted re-entering the water, port bow Kris 1544 Dolphin surfaced off port bow, then off starboard bow Kris We suspect dolphins were often bow-riding but the Sea State 5+ made spotting them difficult! 1623 Small Sea-Snake swimming on starboard side Robin 1710 Beaked Sea-Snake swimming at the surface, starboard side Kris Shearwaters were seen on and off most of the day, also Brown Boobies & Australian Gannets 9/3/ Two Dolphins seen briefly off port bow, leaving Hamilton Island Kris 10/3/ Dolphins, c2 miles to port Kris Also a green hitchhiking Dove and Night Hawk Moth photographed on board! 11/3/16 No sightings leaving Cairns 12/3/16 Big flocks of Noddies and our first Frigate Bird in a while during the early afternoon Dolphins a short distance to starboard Robin Dolphins alongside to starboard then moved quickly away Robin Dolphins to starboard Robin 15 Dolphins passed down port side Oliver Dolphins on port bow then moved aft Robin 13/3/16* Dolphin, probably Bottlenose, on port bow Robin Dolphins, probably Bottlenose, on port bow Robin 1210 A feeding frenzy of fish, bubbling and splashing at surface Robin Bottlenose Dolphin at port bow Robin Bottlenose Dolphins, mother and calf, near port bow Robin Bottlenose Dolphins, near port bow Robin 1230 Leaping Tuna in huge feeding frenzy down starboard side Robin More Flying Fish being seen again now, as well as a small Sea Snake! 14/3/16 No sightings

6 Striped Dolphins leaping and surging 1mile to starboard Robin Large Dolphins leaping to port, aft Kris Striped Dolphins surging in the wake Robin 29/4/ Striped Dolphins, starboard side Robin Dolphins, probably Striped, 1mile to starboard Robin Striped Dolphins leaping in to port bow Robin 5 Striped Dolphins passing down port side Striped Dolphins to starboard bow Robin Striped Dolphins to port bow Robin Striped Dolphins in 4-5 groups, c1mile to starboard Robin 0925 Sea Turtle to starboard Passenger & Kris Lots of Gulls flying around Gibraltar Harbour and fishing in the wash Bottlenose Dolphins swimming alongside in Gibraltar Harbour Robin 30/4/16 I was busy with charity paperwork today so well done for the following sightings in the rough sea! Dolphins, starboard side Passengers 1220 Whale blowing, starboard side then aft Passengers 1/5/16 Unfortunately, I had to continue working on my Sea Watch paperwork but Kris spent a large part of the day on deck and saw ten or twelve separate groups of Common Dolphins, often with or even more in a group. That's over 500 Common Dolphins (which some passengers mis-identified as porpoises). Two passenger sightings were made Dolphin, port side Tom & others Dolphins, probably Common, very close to port side (not porpoises!)
