2 4: First Aid Measures General For advice, contact a Poisons Information Centre (e.g. phone Australia ; New Zealand ) or a doctor. Ingestion Eyes If person is conscious rinse mouth thoroughly with water first then give a glass of water to drink. If swallowed, DO NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, was out mouth again with water and give another glass of water to drink. Seek medical attention urgently. Act quickly failure to do so could cause blindness! hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek urgent medical assistance after this first aid treatment. Caustic soda feels soapy and slippery on the skin. Immediately flush skin/hair with running water. Remove contaminated clothing. Apply a dilute solution (1:8) of vinegar in water to the affected area to neutralize the caustic soda (DO NOT apply to the eyes). Continue to apply the vinegar/water solution until the stinging has gone (at least 10 minutes). Seek medical attention immediately. Whilst caustic soda is highly corrosive to the skin, it generally does not cause pain until major damage has been done act quickly! Inhalation Symptoms Caused by Exposure (Chronic) Medical Attention and Special Treatment Remove victim from exposure avoid becoming a casualty. An unlikely route of exposure other than from mists. Wash face and mouth (even nose) with large amounts of water. Seek medical advice. None Known Treat Symptomatically 5: Fire Fighting Measures Suitable Extinguishing Equipment Specific Hazards Arising from the Chemical Special Protective Equipment and Precautions for Fire Fighters Not combustible, however, if material is involved in a fire use: Fine water spray, normal foam, dry agent (carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder). The product is a strong alkali and will react with metals to produce hydrogen, a flammable gas. May liberate sodium oxide if involved in intense fires, which is highly corrosive to mucous membranes Residual material can decompose if involved in a fire, emitting toxic fumes. Contact with metals may liberate hydrogen gas which is extremely flammable. 3 6: Accidental Release Measures Personal Precautions Environmental Precautions Keep unnecessary personnel away If contamination of sewers or waterways has occurred advise local emergency services Spills and Disposal Small Spills Large Spills Wear personal protective equipment. Wash away with large quantities of water. Neutralise any residue with a dilute vinegar solution. Wear personal protective equipment chemicals goggles, face shield, impervious clothing (e.g. PVC suits), PVC, dust mask, nitrile or rubber gloves and boots. Slippery when wet. Shovel up, collect and seal in properly labelled drums for disposal. Residues may be washed away with water. Collect and place in sealed labelled containers (NOT in aluminium or galvanized metals). Wash down area with large amounts of water. Prevent run off into drains and waterways. 7: Handling and Storage Precautions for Safe Handling Always add product to water with stirring. Beware heat is generated when the product is added to water. Minimise direct contact with product. Conditions for Safe Storage Always replace lid on container after use. Floor of storage should be impervious. Keep away from acids, organic materials, oxidizing agents, food stuffs and ammonium salts.
