6 GAS METER CONVERSION KITS 3 With today s changing conditions, conventional mechanical gas meters do not comply the requirements of authorities. Authorities fix this shortcomings of mechanical meters with electronic conversion kit. New system saves time and money to the authorities and subscribers. In the electronic conversion kit used systems, mechanical meter continue to function as consumption metering. Conversion kit is a complementary unit to mechanical meter and installed series to the mechanical meter for controlling gas flow electronically. SYSTEM INFRASTRUCTURE In the system, gas authority install electronic conversion kit to the gas network as series connection to the mechanical meter. Connection between conversion kit and mechanical meter is established by a data cable. Conversion kit receives consumption information from the pulse signal output of mechanical meter. In the system all subscribers have one smart card defined with their control kit. Subscribers can not use their smart card with other control kits, these works only with their matched control kit. Conversion kit, converts mechanical metering system info to prepayment. Subscriber purchase credit from credit sales points. Purchased credit is transfered to the conversion kit via smart card. After loading of credit from smart card to conversion kit, there is no need to keep the card inside the unit. Subscriber will not use the smart card till next billing cycle. Conversion Kit Application Advantages 1. Absolute consumption information collection and efficient follow-up of the consumed gas amount 2. Elimination of billing process which will lead to saving from personnel and stationary costs 3. Solution of payment and collection problem between authorities and subscribers 4. Consumption, payment, information collection and control operations are automatically performed in the system.

11 ULTRASONIC GAS METER Human ear can detect sound which has below 20 cycles per second frequency range, it is referred to as infrasound. Ultrasound (ultrasonic) waves have a frequency range that is greater than the upper limit of human hearing, that means, it is higher than 20 khz. History of ultrasound technology started with measuring distance under water using sound waves, it is calling SONAR (Sound Navigation an Ranging.) Today, ultrasound technology is mostly using in biomedical, SONAR, RADAR, cleaning, sonochemistry and also metering sectors. GENERATING ULTRASOUND WAVES Transducers help us to generate ultrasound waves. A transducer is a device, that converts one type of energy or physical attribute to another for various purposes including measurement or information transfer. In metering, transducers convert electrical energy into ultrasound waves by using piezoelectrical crystal. Typical ultrasonic transducer switches back and forth many times a second between acting as an actoator to produce ultrasonic waves, and acting as a sensor to detect ultrasonic waves. 8 An ultrasonic flow meter operating principle depends on measuring velocity of liquid or gas via transducers. The flowmeter operates by alternatively transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signal pulses between the two transducers. The signal travels faster when moving with the flow stream rather than against the flow stream. The difference between the two transit times is used to calculate the flow rate. APPLICATION OF ULTRASOUND IN METERING Ultrasonic meters have been around for many years in primarily water measurement. Now we can see ultrasonic technology for metering natural gas. Ultrasonic gas meters come within many advantages. Unlikely conventional mechancal gas meters (diaphragm gas meters) they have no moving parts. That means mechanical factors do not effect measurement, so there is no mechanical faults. Also this point increases lifetime and decreases upkeep expenses. Ultrasonic gas meters measure very small difference in time that it takes an ultrasonic pulse to travel with and against gas stream. That s measurement is more accurate than classical conventional gas meters. Measurement is slightly affected by environmental parameters like temperature, ultrasonic gas meters operate more stable than mechanical meters. So in metering this new technology is very economical solution than previous technologies.

The meter designed according to electronic operating principle, so it does not include any moving part except shut-off valve. Shut-off valve enables controlling the gas consumption status, switches on/off position. Ultrasonic meters measure the velocity of gas of gas inside the measurement path. The digital ultrasonic gas meter has ultrasound technology. Thsi technology needs transducers to generate ultrasound waves. There are two transducers placed inside the measurement path. Ultrasound waves transreceive in each transducers. Gas flow is determined from the difference between the times of flight. The velocity of the gas flow is calculated by using electronics. Electronics calculate the volume of the gas by multiplying the velocity of the gas by the cross-sectional area of the flow path. A digital display is operative to indicate the volume of gas used, and an electricel power supply is used for driving the apparatus. The times of flight are measured by an electronic clock. Finally, a data interface facilitates the feeding of data to or from the meter. The ultrasonic gas meter has highly accurate temperature correction system and extensive diagnostic capability. The meter s volume and mass is smaller than the classical mechanical diaphragm meters. Therefore its compact size reduces installation, maintenance and labor cost. It also has higher safety functions and reliability by real time and keeps measurement accuracy for long time and high volumes. It is very quiet due to no moving mechanical parts.
