1 SPIROVENT VACUUM DEGASSERS S P I R O V E N T A I R S U P E R I O R
2 FLUID AND GAS There are always a certain amount of gasses in a fluid, dependent on pressure and temperature. The British physicist William Henry demonstrated the relation between pressure, temperature and the amount of dissolved gasses in the 18th century. It simply comes down to the principle that there are less dissolved gasses in a fluid as the pressure decreases or the temperature increases. Do you recognise this? When gasses are not, or insufficiently removed, numerous problems and complaints will arise, such as: disturbing noises in radiators, heat exchangers, piping and pumps, difficult and time consuming commissioning, frequent manual venting, decreasing pump performance, insufficient heat delivery or cooling efficiency, for example at higher floors, early wear and tear to installation components such as heat exchangers, regulators, shut off valves and pumps, corrosion of the piping and installation components, failures in the installation and even a complete shut down, complaints of users/occupants and the necessary follow-up. Consequences of not, or insufficiently removing of gasses So these gasses need to be removed! Indeed, but this does not occur automatically. Gasses are often dissolved in the installation fluid or they are present in the form of very small bubbles (micro bubbles). Normal automatic air vents definitely cannot remove these gasses. They are carried away into circulation and will cause the problems mentioned earlier. Spirovent in line deaerators Two ways Gasses can be released from the fluid and removed from the installation in two ways: 1. Thermal degassing Because of temperature differences in an installation, dissolved gasses are released automatically. By means of so called in line deaerators, the released gasses can be removed from the fluid. Spirotech offers various solutions for this. 2. Vacuum degassing In case of vacuum degassing part of the installation fluid is temporarily put in an underpressure (vacuum) condition. The gasses dissolved in the fluid are released, separated and removed from the installation. The degassed, absorptive, fluid is returned into the installation and can absorb any present free gasses again. By repeating this process continuously almost all gasses will be released and removed. The fluid will now be undersaturated to such an extent, that no gasses will be released anywhere in the installation, so the problems mentioned before will not occur. Problems in places with a low flow velocity and a low overpressure are also solved in this way. When to apply a vacuum degasser? When an installation contains many branches, with a low flow velocity. In this case, the free, accumulated gasses will hardly be carried away with the flow, but will disappear slowly thanks to the fluid being made absorptive. In case of small temperature differences only a small amount of gas is released by the heating or cooling process, which can be removed by an in line deaerator. A vacuum degasser works independent of the fluid temperature. When an in line deaerator cannot be mounted for practical reasons. A vacuum degasser can be mounted at almost any place in an installation.
3 SPIROVENT AIR SUPERIOR AUTOMATIC VACUUM DEGASSER FOR HEATING AND COOLING INSTALLATIONS The Spirovent 'Air Superior is a fully automatic vacuum degasser for heating and cooling installations with a volume of up to 150 m 3 and a working pressure of up to 6 bar. Because of the fully electronic control, the Superior offers numerous facilities for reading system information, status and logged data. The device is supplied ready to use, complete with flexible connection hoses, fitted with coupling nuts. Mounting, connecting and commissioning can be done very easily and fast. By adjusting a number of parameters, in combination with adjusting 2 valves in the inlet and outlet piping, the Superior is optimally adjusted in a fast and easy way for any particular installation. Three versions The new Superior vacuum degasser is available in three versions: S6A Automatic, provided with a high-grade, vertical, multistage centrifugal pump and intelligent control. The comprehensive control offers numerous facilities for reading system information, status and logged data. S6A-R As S6A; extended with refill function. The S6A-R measures the installation pressure continuously and, if necessary, fills up the installation with degassed fluid. This keeps an installation on pressure continuously, without the need for additional devices. S6A-R 2P As S6AR; provided with a back-up pump for additional operational reliability of the refill function. Operation principle The Superior starts daily with the degassing process at a pre-set time. The process consists of two phases: The flushing phase: The fluid flows from the installation through the solenoid valve (D) in the degassing vessel (F). Any gasses present are permanently removed from the system by way of the automatic valve in the automatic air vent (M) during the flushing phase. The vacuum phase: This phase starts with closing the solenoid valve (D). The continuously working vertical multi-stage pump (I) keeps an underpressure in the vessel (F), which releases the dissolved gasses. These accumulate at the top of the vessel. The solenoid valve (D) opens again and a new flushing phase will start. The degassed, absorptive, fluid is pumped back into the installation and can absorb gas again. During the next cycle this gas too will be removed from the fluid. Inlet installation fluid Gas outlet Fluid inlet Outlet installation fluid = Only for S6A-R and S6A-R 2P = Only for S6A-R 2P Part of the installation fluid is put in underpressure in the vessel of the Superior. The gasses dissolved in the fluid are released, separated and removed. 4 INTELLIGENT AND EFFICIENT SmartSwitch The SmartSwitch, integrated in the control, always registers when gasses are removed. When the SmartSwitch has not registered anything in 10 minutes, it means that the amount of dissolved gasses has reached the minimum value. The degassing process will then be stopped automatically and resume at the next pre-set time. So the Superior is in operation only when really necessary. This has great advantages concerning energy consumption, wear and tear and technical lifespan of costly components. Filling, pressure monitoring and refilling (types S6A-R and S6A-R 2P) These types Superiors can also be used, before commissioning, to fill the system with degassed water fully automatically. This makes the commissioning of an installation much faster and easier. The Superior monitors the system pressure continuously. If the pressure reaches a value below the pre-set value, the refilling process is started. This always precedes the degassing process. The filling fluid (mostly mains water) is degassed first, before being pumped into the installation. As soon as the system pressure has reached the required value, the refill process is stopped and the Superior continues its normal process. Refilling can be started and stopped in three different ways: by means of the built in pressure sensor in the Superior, by means of the Building Management System or by means of an external device, such as an expansion system. Diagram of the working of the Superior. The bottom right shows that the SmartSwitch shuts off the Superior when no gasses have been released during 10 minutes. The Superior will go in stand-by and will restart at the pre-set time. Stand-by Fully electronic control. Optimally adjustable for any particular installation and numerous facilities for reading system information, status and logged data. Control: When developing the Superior, much attention has been paid to the control and a user-friendly interface. Parameters can be adjusted and read-out fast and easy for: Cutting-off times Refill pressure Start times Refill alarms Maximum system pressure Desired system pressure Operation time Status Refill history Failure data Degassing history Degassing in practice Fluid in an installation contains a certain amount of gasses, dependent of pressure and temperature; the fluid is saturated. When the Superior is turned on, the amount of dissolved gasses will decrease, until the SmartSwitch registers during 10 minutes that the minimum level has been reached and the degassing stops. This minimum level differs in each installation, but anyway the fluid is undersaturated to such extent, that there will be no more gas-related problems. In practice the concentration of dissolved gasses increases slowly after the vacuum degassing has stopped. Gasses will enter the installation again for several reasons, such as diffusion, micro leakages and membranes of expansion systems. The fluid will do everything to take in the gasses, because it is so strongly undersaturated. The Superior will start degassing at regular intervals, so that the level of dissolved gasses is kept as low as possible. Vacuum degassing is therefore no temporary solution, but a necessary continuous process. Where to install? A Superior is always connected as a sidestream device in the main piping of an installation. The Superior can be connected at almost every point in the installation, as it releases, separates and removes the dissolved gasses. It is recommended, however to connect the Superior to the return piping of the system. Dissolved gasses (theory) Dissolved gasses (in practice) Minimum level ml/l Removed gasses (cumulative) [l] Superior On 0 T Heating installation Cooling installation Simplified graphic of the typical result of practical measurements on various installations. During a period of initial degassing, after commissioning or at a new start-up of an installation, the gas level is reduced to the minimum level, after which the Superior switches itself off. Then the gas level increases slowly. By starting the Superior at regular intervals the level of dissolved gasses is kept at a minimum level, so that problems are prevented.
5 SPIROVENT AIR SUPERIOR AUTOMATIC VACUUM DEGASSER FOR HEATING AND COOLING INSTALLATIONS Multifunctional, for optimal fluid conditioning For heating and cooling installations with a volume of up to 150 m 3 and a working pressure of up to 6 bar. Degassed filling Degassing during start-up Automatic degassed refill Sustained pressure Continuous optimal degassing with SmartSwitch Protected against unwanted refilling Cooperates problem-free with all common expansion systems Degassed well = Clean = Efficiency Good degassing decreases corrosion and fouling. Because of this, failures and wear and tear will occur less or even not occur at all. In a well degassed system the efficiency of pumps and other installation components will be maintained. Plug&Play The Superior is easy to mount and to commission; it comes ready to use, complete with flexible connection hoses and is optimally adjustable for any installation. Optimal degassing Large degassing capacity and supplied with a very reliable and leakage-free degassing mechanism. Energy-saving Thanks to the SmartSwitch the device is in operation only when really necessary. Cost reduction A considerable cost reduction shall be realised because of fast and easy commissioning, fast adjustment of the installation, the switching off of the Superior by the SmartSwitch and the absence of failures and wear. Certainty and comfort for: Consultants & designers Contractors Commissioning engineers Property owners End users Occupants Facility management REACTIONS OF USERS: "Before the Superior was installed we had to vent all radiators every two weeks, especially on the higher floors. Now the Spirovent Superior provides continuously deaerated water and a maximal heat comfort for the mostly elderly occupants." Technical Manager housing and healthcare complex "The adjustment of a complicated installation was carried out in a remarkably short time. It was much easier for us to adjust all the parameters correctly, because all air had already been removed. We regularly meet problems that can be traced back directly to the presence of air in the installation. Especially in locations far removed from the boilerhouse it can be very difficult to reach the required temperatures. In this case it was no problem at all." Managing Director commissioning firm "Thanks to the use of a Spirovent Superior we did not have a single failure caused by air in our installation this winter. Working only a few hours a week, the Superior ensures that many problems that previously occurred every year stay away now. The Superior is worth more than its investment." Project Leader Housing "The very extensive installation network in our hospital had many air problems. After seeing the results of the first Superior I immediately ordered 7 additional Superiors. A super device!" Technical Manager Hospital "With other devices you are busy assembling and mounting for a considerable time. The Superior is completely assembled and can be mounted fast and easy. This is much simpler and reduces time considerably." Employee Installer
