General information CleanAIR ARES CA-83 is a respiratory protective device which is supplied with a continuous flow of air and is designed for connection to a compressed air supply Applications The hood is specially designed to provide protection against harmful gases, radiation and spatter during welding, flame cutting, grinding and comparable work. It is particularly well suited if the user is doing hard or sustained work, and if the pollutants have poor warning properties or are particularly toxic. The design of the hood makes it useful for work in confined or inaccessible areas. The product is made of material which does not give rise to frictional sparks System description CleanAIR ARES CA-83 is designed for connection to a suitable source of breathable compressed air. The pressure in the hood prevents polluted ambient air from entering the hood. A compressed air supply hose approved for breathable air is connected to a control valve which is secured to the user s belt. The air flow rate to the hood can be adjusted by means of the control valve. From the control valve, the air flows through a breathing hose to a connection at the rear of the hood. From the connection, the air flows through a special air distributor to the front of the hood. The hood covers the user s head, neck, shoulders, chest and upper part of the back. It is secured to a head harness which is adjustable from the outside. Mounted on the hood is a safety helmet which the user can easily put on and take off as necessary. The welding cassette of the hood is fitted at the factory with an inner visor of clear polycarbonate. Before use, a welding visor of suitable shade number must be fitted to the cassette. When work is interrupted, the welding visor can be raised Breathable air Breathable air shall meet at least the following purity requirements: The pollutants shall be maintained at a minimum and must never exceed the hygienic limit value (standard EN ). The content of mineral oil in the air must be so low that the air will have no oil smell (the threshold of smell is around 0.3 mg/m3). The air shall have a sufficiently low dew point to avoid internal freezing of the equipment. In the event of uncertainty as to whether the above demands have been met, a filter unit such as the CleanAIR Conditioner should be connected. The CleanAIR Conditioner is a two stage stationary pressure air preparation plant. The device is made of a strong metal container with high capacity combined filter inside. In first stage the air passes through HEPA particle filter with efficiency at P3 level, in the second through the inner part with activated charge coal. The filter removes solid particles, fine oil and water aerosols, oil fumes and odors. Filter does not remove carbon monoxide which can be present in the pressured air if the compressor maintenance is neglected.

3 2. Use 2.1. Unpacking Check that the equipment is complete in accordance with the packing list, and that no transport damage has occurred Packing list Hood with breathing hose and safety helmet Control valve Belt Flow meter User instructions N.B. The hood is delivered without welding visor Welding visor Before the hood is used, a welding visor of suitable shade number should be fitted to the welding cassette Safety helmet If the safety helmet is unnecessary for the intended work situation, it can easily be removed Functional check Check that the hood is complete, correctly assembled, thoroughly cleaned and undamaged. Check that the air flow - measured through the hood - is at least 160 l/min. Proceed as follows: -Connect the breathing hose of the hood to the control valve. -Connect the compressed air supply tube to the control valve Putting the hood on Put the belt on and adjust the length. Arrange the control valve in a way that allows easy adjustment of the flow rate and a strict watch over the breathing hose, i. e. it must not be placed on the back of the waist. Connect the breathing hose of the hood to the control valve outlet. Unroll the compressed air tube and make sure that it is not twisted. Connect the tube to the control valve inlet. The hood is now being supplied with air, and can be put on. Adjust the head harness by means of the adjusting knob at the rear of the hood. Adjust the neck width of the hood by means of the elastic neck strap. Adjust the back, shoulder and chest protections. Then adjust the chest protection by means of the adjusting straps.

4 Use the control valve knob to set the air flow rate to suit your current work intensity. In the fully closed position (turn the knob anti-clockwise), the flow is about 170 l/min. In the fully open position (turn the knob clockwise), the flow is more than 350 l/min Taking the hood off Release the chest protection adjusting straps. Release the neck strap by releasing the Velcro tape. Grip the top part of the hood with both hands and pull the hood upwards/forward. Releasing the air tubes: The couplings are of safety types and are released in two stages, i.e. push the coupling towards the nipple, at the same time pulling the locking ring back. After every period of use, check that no defects have occurred, and clean the equipment Warnings/limitations Warnings As a general rule, the user must always be able to retreat to safety without risk if the air supply should cease or if he/she must take off the equipment for some other reason. The equipment must not be used: If the ambient air does not have a normal oxygen content. If the pollutants are unknown. In environments that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH). With oxygen or oxygen-enriched air. If the user finds it difficult to breathe. If you can smell or taste the pollutants. If you experience dizziness, nausea or other types of discomfort. If the air supply is lower than recommended. Limitations A person working in an explosive or flammable environment must follow any local regulations that may be in force for such conditions. At very high work intensity, a partial vacuum may occur in the equipment during the inhalation phase, which may cause ambient air to be drawn in. Use of the equipment together with spiral hose is restricted to situations in which there is little risk of damage to the hose and if the freedom of movement of the user can be restricted.

5 The air supply system should be equipped with an appropriately rated and adjusted pressure relief safety valve. 3. Technical specification Air flow rate: 160 l/min to 280 l/min measured in the hood. Manufacturer s minimum design flow: 160 l/min. Hood: The hood is made of leather. The equipment has a shelf life of 5 years from the date of manufacture. Sizes: Made in one size. The head harness is adjustable and will fit most head sizes. Sound level: Below 80 db(a). Temperature range: Storage temperature: from 0 C to + 45 C and a relative humidity below 80 %. Service temperature: from 10 C to + 60 C and a relative humidity below 80 %. Weight: Weight with helmet (without control valve): 1280 g. Working pressure: 3 10 bar ( kpa) measured at the connection to the control valve. 4. Maintenance Personnel who are responsible for the maintenance of the equipment shall be trained and shall be well acquainted with this type of work Cleaning Clean the hood with a mild solution of soap and water at a temperature not exceeding 30 C. Use a sponge or, if the hood is heavily fouled, a scrubbing brush. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow the hood to dry slowly in air, preferably at a cool temperature. Inspect the hood and replace any worn parts Storage After cleaning, store the equipment in a dry and clean area at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight.

6 4.3. Maintenance schedule Schedule below shows the minimum requirements on maintenance routines to assure the user that the equipment will always be in usable condition Spare parts Welding cassette Proceed as follows to change the welding cassette. Release the welding cassette by removing the six screws retaining it. Use a screwdriver and adjustable spanner. Place the new welding cassette in place and then fit the screws and nuts. Carefully tighten the screws Protective visor/welding visor Proceed as follows to change the visor. Use your fingers to release the retaining clips. Place the protective visor in the inner, fixed part of the welding cassette, and the welding visor in the outer, hinged part. Fit the retaining clips and check that they are in position. The visors should be CE marked and of standard size, i.e. 60 x 110 mm Head harness Proceed as follows to change the head harness. Release the head harness which is secured by means of six screws: two at each helmet mounting, one immediately above the welding cassette, and one in the adjusting knob. Use a screwdriver, adjustable spanner and slip-joint pliers. Remove the head harness from the hood. Place the new head harness in the hood and then fit the screws. Carefully tighten the screws Sweatband Proceed as follows to change the sweatband. Fit the toweling sweatband with the Velcro tape towards the outside of the head harness Safety helmet Proceed as follows to fit/remove the safety helmet. The helmet mountings are sprung at the top edge. To remove the safety helmet, compress the helmet mountings one at a time, at the same time pulling the helmet upwards. To fit the helmet, align the mountings with the holes in the helmet. Then press the helmet down. Check that the helmet mountings have sprung out and locked in position Control valve The control valve is a complete, sealed unit. Never attempt to repair or modify it Breathing hose To change the breathing hose, proceed as follows: Cut away the protective sheath over the hose clip. Use a pair of pincers, for instance, to cut off the clip. Pull the hose off.

7 The new hose is supplied with a hose clip and protective sheath. Thread these onto the hose and connect the hose to the hose nipple on the hood. The protective sheath can be left out, which will not affect the performance of the equipment. Use a pair of pincers, for instance, to secure the hose clip. The protective sheath is made of shrink plastic and should be secured in position, if required, by means of a warm air gun. By pulling the hose, check that it is firmly secured to the hood. 5.
