Scope: Applies to all Central New Mexico Community College Employees (CNM) who hanle material. CNM Way Expert: Safety an Environmental Department Functional Units Involve-Responsibilities: A. Managers/Supervisors: a. Ensures all worksite epartments implement an maintain the provisions of the Material Hanling/MSD Prevention program. b. Ensures manual lifting equipment such as ollies, han trucks, lift-assist evices, jacks, carts, hoists provie for employees. c. Ensures use of provie manual lifting equipment by employees is enforce. B. Employees a. Complies with safe work proceures. b. Correctly uses the equipment provie by CNM, accoring to manufacturers recommenations. c. Reports to the supervisor any unsafe acts, unsafe tasks, unsafe conitions or equipment problems that create MSD hazars.. (See pages 2-7, MSD Ientification Form). 2) Work Controls a) Housekeeping: Material hanling an storage areas must be kept free of excess materials that create hazars (i.e. fire, explosions, slips, trips, or infestation by insects or roents.) b) Material Hanling Equipment: Aitional tools an equipment are when lifting or hanling material weighing over 50 pouns. Manual material hanling equipment shoul be use only for its esigne task an maintaine in goo conition. c) Hanling Heavy or Awkwar Loas: All employees are to lift safely an minimize manual hanling when possible: i) Where use of lifting equipment is impractical or not possible, two man lifts must be use. ii) All loas carrie on hancarts shall be secure. iii) All awkwar type loas shall be secure to prevent tipping over. iv) Aitional methos inclue: (1) Reucing the weight of the loa by iviing it into two manageable loas. (2) Reucing the capacity of the container. (3) Reucing the istance the loa must be hel away from the boy by reucing the size of the packaging. (4) Team lift the object with two workers.
