1. The Importance of PPE and Signage for SMEs GroFin invests in small and growing businesses (SGBs) that are legally compliant with relevant Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations and that offer workers a safe, healthy working environment. GroFin requires clients to identify OH&S risks/hazard areas and take adequate measures to protect workers from being injured or harmed as a result of these risks/hazards. GroFin assists SGB clients with identifying OH&S risks by supplying templates and basic guidance (e.g. GroFin Small Business Guide: Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan, GroFin Small Business Guide: Environmental Health & Safety Implementation and Monitoring Plan, and this document. In higher risk businesses, GroFin will require clients to consult, and be assisted by, OH&S experts. Best practice methods to protect workers from harm/injury include:
2. Business types/sectors that will typically require PPE Manufacturing (plastics, metal, woodwork) Bottling, canning plants Construction/development sites and companies Agricultural operations, farms, food processing facilities, animal rearing facilities Laboratories (including science/chemistry labs at schools) Chemical, pharmaceutical processing Transport and removal companies Warehouses, storage facilities Engineering works, garages, service stations Petrol stations, fuel depots, fuel transport Quarries, stone works, road works Engineering works, metal works Important Note: Some specialist businesses may require specialised/industry specific PPE e.g. kiln operators, beekeepers, abattoirs, hazardous chemical manufacturers, undertakers/burial services.
3. Basic principles of PPE
4. Hand Protection Factories, manufacturing sites, agricultural operations, some retail areas, wholesale and packaging, engineering works, garages/service stations anywhere where there is risk of cutting, crushing, burning or breaking fingers and hands. Cuts, abrasions and chemical burns to fingers/hands Crushed hands, losing fingers Spread of disease GLOVES that are appropriate for the activity and risk: RUBBER/PLASTIC GLOVES for food/chemical handling WELDING GLOVES - welding Strong LEATHER GLOVES for working with power-tools and heavy machinery INSULATED GLOVES when there is a risk of electrical shocks
5. Feet Protection Manufacturing, agricultural, quarries, garages/service stations anywhere where there is lifting and/or moving of heavy objects or risk of feet being crushed by objects, trolleys, lifts, machinery or vehicles. Or where there is exposure to liquids/liquid chemicals or excessive water. Physical injury to toes and feet. Chemical burns, scalding, and other injury from spills, leaks, splashing of harmful liquids/chemicals. Over-exposure to water can cause discomfort and illness. There is also the risk of slipping on wet surfaces. Steel-toed SAFETY SHOES/BOOTS Sealed, workgrade GUMBOOTS with soles that grip to wet floor surfaces
6. Head and Face Protection Building and construction sites, warehouses, retail storage areas, factories with overhead cranes/pulleys, forklift operators, quarries, engineering works. Operating machinery or tools that produces convective heat, sparks or the potential for splashing, spraying, or minor explosions. Objects or products falling on workers heads Flying objects Machinery failure Any situation where a worker s head is at risk of injury Burning/blinding from Welding Working with hazardous chemicals, heated or boiling liquids Any situation where workers full face is at risk of injury Well fitting, regulation HARD HATS Full face VISOR or FACE MASK (these are often attached to Hard Hats)
7. Eye Protection Machinery producing sparks or bright light (e.g. welding, angle grinding). Areas where there is potential for chemical spills and splashing (e.g. wash areas). Areas where there is potential for machinery failure or explosion. Physical injury to eyes from flying parts, products, liquids, excessive dust/particles Bright light damaging eyes Any situation where a worker s eyes are at risk of injury/damage Situationappropriate SAFETY GLASSES (e.g. dark/tinted glasses for bright light risk areas)
8. Hearing Protection Any work area or place of work that involves exposure to excessive/potentially damaging noise including manufacturing and construction sites where there is operation of machinery (presses, conveyor belts, bottling/ canning, boilers), some vehicles, and power tools (saws, angle grinders and drills). Hearing damage or loss EAR PLUGS, EAR MUFFS 9. Breathing Protection Manufacturing sites, agricultural operations (e.g. milling), chemical processing, construction sites where there is angle grinding and/or working with large amounts of cement powder anywhere where there is risk of workers breathing in dust, fumes, smoke. Damage to lungs and lung disease; Unconsciousness, asphyxia; Further injury because of disorientation or loss of consciousness. FACE MASKS or FULL RESPIRATORS (for working with dangerous chemicals, cement, fine dust materials such as cement).
10. Back and Body Anywhere where there is risk of workers harming their backs from excessive load/repetitive lifting. Sites where there is risk of spills harming or inconveniencing workers. Including restaurants, hotels, food and agricultural processing facilities. Harm and/or injury to workers backs; Associated risk of falling and causing further injury if back is suddenly disabled/harmed. Chemical or hot liquid burns; Damage to workers clothing. BACK SUPPORT BELTS/BRACES. APRONS and OVERALLS
11. Visibility Factories, manufacturing sites, quarries, transport companies, construction sites, some agricultural operations, wholesale and packaging anywhere where there is risk of being harmed or injured by not being seen properly. Harmed, injured or killed by humanoperated vehicles and moving machinery. BRIGHTLY COLOURED, and REFLECTIVE OUTER GARMENTS VESTS, OVERALLS.
12. A Few Examples of Best Practice PPE Combos Worker using Angle Grinder/Power Saw Welder Worker Moving Heavy Objects (e.g. moving boxes of food in a warehouse) Worker Operating Milling Machine (or other machinery with dust) Worker Mixing Chemicals in a Lab (or working with any hazardous substances) Worker at a Construction Site (or other heavy manual labour) Forklift Driver THICK protective LEATHER GLOVES EYE PROTECTION HEARING PROTECTION (for prolonged/constant use) THICK protective LEATHER GLOVES WELDING GOGGLES/FULL-FACE WELDING MASK Steel-toed SAFETY SHOES/BOOTS OVERALL/WELDING APRON Steel-toed SAFETY SHOES/BOOTS BACK SUPPORT/BRACE HIGH VISIBILITY VEST/TOP (if forklifts/vehicles being used) Protective LEATHER GLOVES EYE PROTECTION BREATHING MASK HEARING PROTECTION (for prolonged/constant use) OVERALLS RUBBER GLOVES EYE PROTECTION BREATHING MASK OVERALLS/LAB COAT Protective LEATHER GLOVES when using power tools EYE PROTECTION when using power tools BREATHING MASK when mixing chemicals/cement powder Steel-toed SAFETY SHOES/BOOTS HIGH VISIBILITY VEST/TOP Steel-toed SAFETY SHOES/BOOTS 13.
