Recreational swimming risks including injury and drowning A staff member will supervise students in the lake at all times, from the shore. Staff member will be equipped with a whistle for alerting attention of swimmers. Students to be counted in and out of the water. All students to remain within sight of staff at all times. Students not to go beyond waist deep during recreational swimming. Students briefed before entering water, reminded to look out for each other Supervising staff member will check: a. Supervision levels b. Water temperature c. Water clarity d. Depth indications e. Diving safety f. Changing facilities g. Behavioural codes

5 Risk of bilharzia Students advised of risk of Bilharzia best policy is avoidance. All staff and students advised to take bilharzias medication as appropriate. Risk of crocodiles Local croc situation assessed and reported to students upon arrival. Hiking Hazards? Incident involving a member of the public Students are to be accompanied at all times by a local guide and school staff Tell pupils the limits of their area of exploration. Assess the risk in terms of the nature of other visitors and take action accordingly Getting lost Determine the strategy pupils should follow if they get lost and tell the party Ensure that pupils are aware of location of NP office Ensure that pupils know where to re-group following if they become detached from group Hazards encountered if a pupil left the location Ensure good conduct of the party Determine points of exit that pupils might try and devise a preventative strategy Ensure a good staff presence Monitor more closely those thought likely to try Environmental and weather conditions Obtain a local weather forecast for the day, prior to the visit temperature and sun exposure risk Advise youngsters on appropriate footwear and clothing prior to the visit. Check clothing and footwear of the group on the day to ensure its suitability. Pupils to carry at least 2L of water

6 Ensure that there are suitable facilities available for toilet and washing. Suitable sun protection at all times Slippery surfaces Ensure good conduct Ensure that the environment is safe prior to starting the trip Ensure that the floor surface is appropriate Ensure students have hands free to support themselves throughout trip Walk slowly and hold the handrails Full attention given to safety briefings Stay sat down where possible Leaving someone behind All groups should be checked by group leader before disembarking and again afterwards.

7 SCUBA Hazards? (Please list) SEE ATTACHED RISK ASSESSMENT FROM SCUBA SHACK Pupils/Staff 2 Solutions to SCUBA Hazards? In Summary: During all diving-related activities students will be under the authority of fully qualified dive instructors and staff. It is strongly recommended that students are certified medically fit to dive. The dive centre is headed by one male Senior Dive Instructor who has logged 1,000s of dives. The dive staff also includes an experienced male instructor specialised in Emergency First Response and technical diving, a female instructor with many specialised dive qualifications and a license to train Drive Masters, and another three Emergency First Response and Rescue divers who are all very experienced in Lake Malawi. All boat skippers are also first aid trained. The maximum group size is 6 divers per group there will always be at least 1 instructor and a Rescue Diver for assistance per group. Often it will be 2 instructors per group. DETAIL THE HAZARDS IDENTIFIED WHO IS AT RISK? RISK LIKELIHOOD CONTROL MEASURES UNDERTAKEN Overall Hazard Rating?
