1 Hw t Install a Tilet By See Jane DrillTM Cpyright 2013, All Rights Reserved Objective T learn hw t remve an existing tilet and install a new tilet. The steps described in these written instructins and in the accmpanying vide at seejanedrill.cm will enable the learner t cmplete this task safely, quickly and efficiently. Resurces Needed t Cmplete the Jb Tls & Equipment Adjustable Wrench Hand multi-tl OR a Phillips and flathead screwdriver Tngue-and-grve pliers (a.k.a. channel lcks) Utility Knife Clamp Scrapers (1 r 2) New Tilet, preferably an easy-installatin mdel. Imprtant Nte: Befre purchasing the new tilet, measure the distance between the wall and the flange blt n the existing tilet. This distance shuld measure 12 inches r 1 ft n mst tilets. Hwever, if yur tilet sits clser r further frm the wall, yu will need t special-rder a new tilet frm yur lcal hme-imprvement stre. 1 New water supply line that is the crrect length fr the distance between the tank f the new tilet and the water shut-ff valve (if needed) New tilet seat, if nt prvided in the package with the new tilet Wax ring and flange blts, if nt prvided in the package with the new tilet

2 General Supplies Paper Twels Bucket Large Spnge Plastic Garbage Bags General Supplies, cnt. Plastic Tarp (dispsable) Old Rags Dispsable Plastic Glves Anti-bacterial cleaner r wipes Blue masking r painters tape Special Requirements Allw yurself at least three hurs t cmplete this task. It may nt take that lng, but yu dn t want t rush yurself Installatin f the new tilet will require tw persns t cmplete that prtin f the jb Steps t Remve Old Tilet 1. General Ntes: It is a gd idea t clean the area arund the tilet with antibacterial cleaner, prir t beginning the jb. Als, wear cmfrtable clthing that yu dn t mind getting dirty. 2. Shut ff Water and Discnnect Water Supply Line: a. Turn the handle n the shut-ff valve t the water supply line t the ff psitin. Make sure it is tightly turned ff. If yu dn t have a shut-ff valve, yu will need t turn ff the water at the water meter. This wuld als be true if yur shut-ff valve is brken and/r stuck in the n psitin.

3 b. Flush the tilet t remve mst f the water frm the tank. c. Take lid ff the tank, and with a large spnge, sp up any remaining water in the tank, and dispse f the water. d. Check the bwl t see if there is any remaining water. If there is, sp up the water with a large spnge s that the bwl is nearly dry. e. Discnnect the water supply line frm the tank. Make sure yur bucket is handy. Depending upn the tilet that yu have, yu might be able t unscrew it by hand, r yu may need t use a tl n it such as channel lcks r an adjustable wrench. Water Supply Line Cnnectin t the Tank f. When yu pull ff the water supply line frm the tank, there may be water dripping frm it. If there is, just clamp the line t the bucket as shwn belw. 3

4 3. Remve the Existing Tilet: a. First, yu will need t remve the caps that are ver the tw flange blts that are hlding the tilet t the flr. Inspect the nuts. Depending upn their cnditin, their remval culd g quickly r culd be a bit time-cnsuming. The vide shws examples f bth a badly rusted nut, and ne that is in gd cnditin. i. Fr the gd cnditin blt: The nut shuld be easily remved with a wrench r channel lcks. Then remve the blt and the washer. ii. Fr the rusted blt: Attempt t remve the nut with channel lcks r a wrench. If that is nt pssible, yu will need t cut the blt ff with a hack saw r an scillating multi tl with a wd/metal flush-cut blade. Remval f the Rusted Blt with Channel Lcks b. Lay a plastic tarp next t the tilet, and then place an pened garbage bag n tp f the tarp. The idea is that the base f the ld tilet will be inside the garbage bag, with the bag wrapped arund it fr remval. i. Imprtant Nte: The tilet is very heavy (50-plus punds) and is awkwardly shaped. It is pssible t mve the tilet alne, as shwn in the vide, but if yu have help t mve the tilet, by all means use it.

5 c. Lift the tilet up and set it n the pened plastic bag. d. Nte: There are several ways t dispse f an ld tilet. Yu can take it t the dump, r yu can break it dwn int pieces and dispse f it in the trash. Steps t Install the New Tilet 1. Clean-up and Remval f Old Wax Ring a. Imprtant Safety Nte: Place an ld rag inside the pening t the sewer line, t prevent sewer gasses frm entering the huse. b. Wearing rubber glves, scrape up and dispse f the ld wax ring. Depending upn the cnditin f the ld wax ring, this culd g quickly r take a few minutes. c. If the plastic prtin f the wax ring has separated frm the wax, remve and dispse f it. d. Clean up the area arund the flange, preferably with anti-bacterial cleaner. 2. Imprtant Nte abut the flange and the surrunding flr area: Yur flange and flr may be in gd cnditin, as thse in the vide were. In the event that the flange is damaged, yu may need t replace the flange r install an adaptable flange ver the ld flange. Flanges are available frm mst large hme-imprvement stres. Please nte that it is critical that the flr beneath the tilet be in sund cnditin. If there are signs f rtted wd in the flr (such as if the ld tilet was rcking) the rtted wd will need t be replaced. If yu feel cmfrtable with remving the rtted wd and replacing it, this is the time t d s. If nt, yu will need t seek assistance in replacing the rtted wd. 3. Distance frm the wall: Duble-check t ensure that the pening t the flange n yur tilet is 12 inches r 1 ft frm the wall. (See resurces list fr instructins regarding tilets that are situated further r clser frm the wall) 5

6 4. The flange blts. The existing flange blts may be in gd cnditin, in which case yu will nt have t install new nes. If yu d need t install new flange blts, yu will nte that the flange blt is blngshaped t match the hle in the curved channel in the flange. Insert, slide, and twist the blt. If the flange blt is wbbling, yu can steady it with a washer, but it may nt be necessary. See picture belw. Installed Flange Blt with Nut and Washer 5. Measure and mark the flr. Make sure the flange blt is 12 inches frm the wall. Mark the spt with a heavy black marker, and then lay a blue tape line as well. Extend yur mark alng the tape. The blue tape line will assist yu with psitining the new tilet ver the flange blts during the installatin, as yu will nt be able t see the flange blts frm abve. 6. Install the new wax ring. There are tw ptins fr ding this. Yu can either stick it n the bttm f the tilet (as mst manufacturers suggest) r lay it ver the flange. Either chice will wrk. 7. Imprtant Nte: The next step, installing the new tilet, requires tw peple. 8. Lift the tilet and put it int psitin, making sure that the slts n the new tilet line up with the flange blts.

7 9. Sit n the tilet t cmpress the wax ring and ensure that it seals prperly. 10. Blt the tilet t the flr by installing the flange blt nuts that cme with the tilet, as per the manufacturer s instructins. It is imprtant t nt ver-tighten the nuts, as the prcelain culd crack. 11. Install the new caps ver the flange blts/nuts. 12. Attach the tank t the tilet. a. Install bwl gasket t the bttm f the tank Installing Tank Gasket b. Attach the tank t the bwl. Nte that the tank shwn cmes with pre-installed blts. Yu will pilt thse blts int the apprpriate hles n the tilet, and line up the gasket with the large hle in the center. c. The parts inside the tank: The tilet shwn is an easy- installatin mdel, which means that all the parts inside the tank are pre-assembled. See Jane Drill recmmends that if pssible, yu purchase a mdel that 7

8 cmes with the tank parts installed, as this is a huge timesaver. d. Tighten the blts that are hlding the tank t the tilet base. The tilet shwn came with a special tl t accmplish this easily, but different mdels may have different hardware. 13. Attach the tilet seat. a. Line up the tabs n the tilet seat with the hles in the tilet base. b. Lift the caps n the tabs and insert the blts in the hles c. Attach the nuts n the bttm f the blts. Hld the blt still with a screwdriver, and tighten the nuts frm the bttm by hand 14. Attach the water supply line a. Attach the water supply line cnnectr t the tank, fllwing the manufacturer s instructins. b. (If yu are using a new water supply line) discnnect the ld water supply line at the wall, if yu haven t already dne s. c. (If yu are using a new water supply line) attach the water supply line t the valve at the wall, using a wrench. (Nte: If the valve is leaking after yu have tightened it with a wrench, yu may want t use Tefln tape r pipe dpe n it, prir t installing the water supply line) d. Turn n the water at the shut-ff valve 15. Check t be sure there are n leaks and that the tank is filling up with water 16. Flush the tilet nce t be sure the tilet is perating crrectly
