1 Packraft Rescue Crash Course The Swiftwater Safety Institute is providing 2 Packraft Rescue Crash Courses just prior to the American Packraft Association Round up. We thank Aspen Kayak Academy for working with us on permitting issues. Space is limited to 20 students. Lead instructor is Scott Solle and assisted by Dan Thurber. This class is designed for adventurers who are new to packrafting and need or want structured training on self-rescue, companion rescue, and basic paddling technique. Class fills up fast so register early. When: Monday/Tuesday, June 4 th & 5 th, and Wednesday/Thursday, June 6 th & 7 th 2018 at 8:30 AM Class Cost: $275 for 2 Days Where: Carbondale, CO (8:30 AM Meeting time until 4:30 PM) We will meet at the boat ramp on the Roaring Fork River just downstream of the bridge on HWY 133. Access is from HWY 82 about a mile downstream of the bridge. See page 2-5 maps for better details. There will be a land-based discussion to start class so no need to be suited up and ready to get into the water. Registration: Prerequisites: Contact Swiftwater Safety Institute at Paddlers/Swimmers must be physically capable Required Equipment: Type III or appropriate Type V PFD, SSI is strongly recommending a Drysuit due to snow runoff and a wetsuit with splash gear is a minimum, appropriate Helmet (climbing or bicycle helmets are not appropriate), Footwear with sturdy soles, Thermal Protection for under a drysuit (warm fleece works best), and Eye protection (sunglasses with retainer), Sun protection, and of course everyone needs a packraft and paddle. Bring a lunch for both days that you can take in your packraft. Drysuits are available for rent through Scott Solle for $75/class, call to reserve one. Objectives: SSI Rescue Philosophy - "Simple is smooth and smooth is fast, Hazard Identification, Lowrisk to high-risk rescue techniques, Self-rescue, Throwbag Rescues, Contact Rescues, Shallow Water Crossings, Hydrology, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Swimming (Passive and Aggressive), Foot Entrapment Extrication, Strainers. Packraft Specific skills will be self-rescue (Wet Exit, Wet Entry), Companion Rescue, Group travel and dynamics, Rapid Scouting. (Working on the river is a dynamic environment. Effort is made to cover each topic. Water levels, weather, student retention, and other elements may make some skills unworkable. No guarantees are made that all skills will be practically performed). Notes: Completion of this course will not provide any certification. This is a quick course to get basic skills for packrafters hoping to get on the water. There are minimal rope skills taught in this class which is very different than a Swiftwater Rescue Class, and this is not a course that is intended to teach you how to travel light. This class is heavy on swimming so plan on getting wet both days. Additionally, we will ask the group for assistance in running a shuttle both days, thanks for any consideration. More Class Information: Contact Lead Instructor Scott Solle by at moabrescuetech@gmail.com or call (801) More class and instructor information available at the SSI website
