Safe Practices Prevention Stretch before practice and games. Proper Equipment Pitching helmets for all pitchers Catcher s gear (including cups and throat guard) Only one player in on deck circle No jewelry Field Maintenance Hydrate before, during and after game Lightning At the first sound of thunder stop play; play can resume 30 minutes after last sound of thunder

Safe Practices -cont.- Have parent s contact information in phone so you can easily contact them. First aid kits in each box Includes ice packs If you use an item notify Jason Fleming for replacement Coach is not to warm up a pitcher Catchers must wear full gear

First Aid Basics Principles of CPR C Circulation (AED if available and compressions) A Airway head tilt, chin lift B Breathing consider an obstruction (gum, sunflower) It s recommended that all adults be CPR certified. Primary goal of treating injuries Control Bleeding Stabilize wounds Assess need for immediate medical treatment

Injury & Treatment Head injury Go through concussion protocol If unconscious call 911 immediately and assess need for CPR Tooth injury Collect tooth and tooth fragments, do not handle the root of the tooth. Put tooth back in socket and lightly bite down on gauze. May also place between cheek and gum. Keeping the tooth and fragments in mouth prevents drying. If unable to keep in mouth place in soaked gauze but not on ice. Seek immediate medical treatment and wear gloves if assisting. Nose bleed Direct pressure under bony part of nose, sit and lean slightly forward so the blood does not run down their throat and cause aspiration. Hold for 10 minutes before checking. If you can t get bleeding under control; seek medical care. Wear gloves.

Injury & Treatment -cont.- Laceration Direct pressure to stop bleeding with gauze, do not remove gauze if blood soaks through, continue pressure and roll another gauze layer over top while continuing pressure. Wear gloves. Heat exhaustion Symptoms: Dizzy, lightheadedness, red face, rapid breathing, cramps Put in shade; lie down; loosen clothing, elevate legs; cold compress, hydrate. Heat Stroke: An emergency situation. Symptoms: Lack of sweating, face pale, disoriented. Call 911 and follow treatment steps for heat exhaustion until medics arrive.. Allergic Reaction: Call parents and locate the child s medication, call 911 if necessary. Bee sting: Epi pen Asthma: Inhaler

Fractures If an open fracture or disfigurement that is likely a serious fracture, call 911. For injury where a fracture is uncertain, release to parents to determine further medical evaluation. When in doubt call 911.

Quick Sports Injury Guideline PRICE guide to treating injuries: To be used during the 1 st 48 to 72 hours following an injury. Goal: Control swelling, prevent further injury & reduce pain. P Protection (protect from further injury with support or splint) R Rest I- Ice (15 to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours; never directly on skin) C Compression (with elastic bandage to limit swelling & movement) E Elevate (above heart level and keep supported)

Summary Points When in doubt; call 911 Tell the field you are on Appoint someone to go to street to flag down ambulance Make sure the call was made, tell someone specifically to make the call. Report all safety incidents to Jason Fleming. A copy of an incident report will be ed to you.
