6 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION No adverse health effects expected if the product is handled in accordance with this Safety Data Sheet and the product label. Symptoms or effects that may arise if the product is mishandled and overexposure occurs are: Acute Effects: Ingestion: Swallowing can result in nausea, vomiting and central nervous system depression. If aspirated into the respiratory system during ingestion or vomiting, aspiration pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs) may result. Inhalation: Material may cause irritation to the respiratory system (mucous membranes and respiratory tract). Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure through inhalation. Inhalation of vapour can result in headaches, dizziness and possible nausea. Inhalation of high concentrations can produce central nervous system depression, which can lead to loss of co-ordination, impaired judgement and, if prolonged, unconsciousness. Eye contact: May be an eye irritant. Skin contact: A skin irritant. Will have a degreasing action on the skin. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may lead to allergic contact dermatitis. However, for the constituent: n-hexane: Oral LD50 (rat): mg/kg Toxicological data suggests that methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) interacts with n-hexane and enhances the neurotoxicity of n-hexane (which is metabolised to the neurotoxic metabolites 2,5-hexandione and 2,5- hexanediol). Exposure to n-hexane air concentration varying from as little as 30 up to 250 ppm has been reported to result in clinical neuropathy. A rapid onset may occur particularly if exposure has been to high air concentrations for periods in excess of eight hours per day. In most cases a gradual onset has been noted. Cases of peripheral neuropathy have been reported amongst Japanese sandal workers and Taiwanese pressproofers exposed to n-hexane levels of approximately 50 and 100 ppm respectively for periods in excess of eight hours per day. 7 Several cross-sectional studies have independently reported mild sub-clinical effects in workers exposed to ppm n-hexane.
