If work operations such as welding, cutting, or use of chemicals is required within a confined space, the conditions of the space will change and should be evaluated with EHS prior to entry. 2. Atmospheric monitoring always includes oxygen content, carbon monoxide, and flammable gasses or vapors, and other toxic air contaminants as deemed necessary based on the pre-entry assessment. 3. Although PPE options are outlined in the table, it is not all inclusive, and PPE will vary depending on the tasks and exposure risks. A full-body harness will be worn by employees entering confined spaces unless waived by the Office of EHS. Appropriate respiratory protection will be selected based on historic and direct read air monitoring results. Appropriate PPE will be considered and outlined in Section B (Pre-Entry Plan) of the Confined Space Permit located in Appendix D prior to entry. 4. Permit confined space entry will include retrieval system (full-body harness, tripod, ropes) and a hardhat unless deemed by the Associate Director of EHS to create additional hazards. 5. Manholes owned by utility companies are not secured or posted by the College. Bowdoin College Page 6 of 7 Revision
