1 Topic: Rescue Carries and Drags Reference #: DG Level of Instruction: In service personnel Time Required: 3 hours Instructor Preparation: This drill requires basic preparation in order for it to be successfully conducted. Preparation includes having a safe location to conduct the drill, preferably a drill tower, but this can all be done in a station dayroom, classroom or station bays. Safety is a must during the duration of this drill, and caution must be exercised with spotter personnel to assist during evolutions to reduce the chance of injury. Goals: The goals of this drill are: To review the adverse conditions under which rescues from burning buildings are undertaken. To review the carries and drags to remove victims from a burning building. Emphasize the difficulty of such efforts and labor intensiveness of them. Materials: Rescue dummy if available (can be hose dummy) o NOTE: If you don t have a hose dummy, this would be a good time to make a one. 2 Standard turnout gear and SCBA References: Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, 3 rd edition (Jones & Bartlett) Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, Chapter 14. Instructor Set-up: Other than possibly making a hose dummy, this is a relatively simple drill that doesn t take much time at all to set up and involves a minimal amount of equipment. Take care if the drills are in the station to prevent damage to furniture, walls, etc. Student Motivation: Firefighters #1 goal is saving life, and as labor intensive as search is, the removal of a victim once found can really tax the personnel on scene. This drill will show the difficulty and personnel needs as well Drill: 1. Review each technique shown. Exercise extreme caution if a person is used in lieu of a rescue dummy. Spotters should be utilized for the Standing Drag. 2. Practice with SCBA worn. Using the mask and air is a good option. 3. Depending on class size, break into groups to practice different drags and carries. 4. Clothes Drag one of the more simple methods, but note firefighter s height in the environment may be too high depending on smoke and heat. Sunglasses on the victim are optional as they will probably be inside a building. FETI Drill Guide /2014 Page 2 of 6

Blanket Drag utilizing materials on scene where you find the victim such as a blanket or bedspread, you rapidly roll the victim into the material, and keeping their head off the ground you drag them to the exit. The blanket or bedspread allows the victim to be slid more easily across the floor. Note the firefighter in this picture like the previous may be too high for conditions. 6. Standing Drag - one of the most common methods used, by lifting the victim s upper body off the floor the resistance dragging the person across the floor is greatly reduced. Like the above two, heat and smoke conditions may preclude this method (illustration next page). Use caution not to hurt the rescuer or victim in training, proper lifting technique is extremely important to reduce the chance of injury to the rescuer. FETI Drill Guide /2014 Page 3 of 6

4 7. The Webbing Sling and Firefighter Drag are both suitable for adverse conditions. The Webbing Sling method allowing for two firefighters at the head. Both stress the need to carry a section of webbing in your turnout gear. FETI Drill Guide /2014 Page 4 of 6

5 The Skill Drills are from Jones & Bartlett s Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, 3rd edition and are used with permission. Future Drill Guides will go over victim removal out windows and using ladders no live rescue dummies should be used for those exercises. Review: Clean up the equipment and return to service. Then come together in the meeting room or location of choice and take the time to have open discussions on what worked for teams and what didn t.
