Diederich Group Safety Information Safety and Good Practice (1) Website of HCI Safety Commission: Everybody has to comply with the rules of Safety and Good Practice in the Laboratory (Laborsicherheitskonzept D-CHAB) available at the Schalter D-CHAB. Before doing any work, you have to inform yourself on location and use of fire extinguishers, fire blankets, emergency showers, eye showers, and other safety equipment. The eye showers located next to the sink in each lab should be rinsed at least once a month to prevent rust or other corrosion products from forming inside the fittings. The senior doctoral student in each lab should take care of this job. September 9,

Safety and Good Practice (2) Never work alone in the lab. If nobody else is around in your lab (for example at night or on weekends), make sure to tell somebody in a neigbouring lab that you are working and ask the person to look after you from time to time and to tell you when he or she is leaving. Look also after other people who do labwork. Students (in particular Praktikanten and students carrying out their Diplomarbeit ) must never work alone. A designated supervising person must always be present in the same lab. Before students do any experimental work, the tutors have to instruct the students on location and use of fire extinguishers, fire blankets, emergency showers, eye showers, and other safety equipment. Safety and Good Practice (3) Goggles must be worn at all times in the lab. People with correction glasses must wear safety goggles on top of them (larger model, see lower left). Safety goggles with correction glasses are an alternative. For further information, see September 9,

Safety and Good Practice (4) Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly forbidden in the lab. Gloves must not be worn outside of the lab (contamination risk!). Setups that run overnight must be safe (setup labeled, collecting tray under setups stirred at r.t., heating regulated by contact thermometer, coolant tubings fastened with clamps, etc.). Keep lab doors always shut (no unmounting of springs!). Doors of emergency balconies must stay shut in order to maintain a pressure difference between inside and outside of the building (important for the ventilation to work properly) and to prevent potential fires from spreading quickly! Safety and Good Practice (5) Store chemicals that may react with each other in separate places! House vacuum must never be used without trap, not even for simple vacuum filtrations (see below, pictures of compounds sucked into the vacuum system)! Hg! September 9,

Safety and Good Practice (6) Hose adapters should be tightenend only by hand (never with a wrench or other tool damages the valves) Safety and Good Practice (7) As soon as you have hose connectors mounted on the coolant in- and outlets, there must be a closed loop (tubing or coil of glassware) between them. Otherwise they may leak. Don t forget to turn off the coolant circuit when you don t need it (helps to prevent floodings). Always fasten your tubings with clamps so that they won t slip off the connectors (helps to prevent floodings). inlet (shown here without hose connectors) outlet on/off Dosage Note that there are no drains to take up leaking water and that floodings constitute a major source of trouble and damages in the labs!!! September 9,

Don t use connectors of this type: they can fall apart This kind of tubing should be used preferentially for coolant. Never use rubber tubing for coolant. Clamps missing Fume Hoods Vertical sash should be lowered whenever possible Better efficiency (s. picture: velocity of air current as a function of sash position) Mechanical protection from explosions, etc. September 9,

In Case of an Accident... (1) If necessary, make an emergency call (central emergency office ETH) Move people out of dangerous area Administer first aid - Who calls? (Name, address, phone number) - What ist the situation? - When and where did the accident happen? (where is/are the injured now?) - How many people are concerned? In Case of an Accident... (2) September 9,

In Case of An Accident... (3) For details, see Safety and Good Practice (D-CHAB) booklet... and Emergency call. 1 st priority: Phone no. 888 (central emergency office ETH). Ask precisely for what you need. If necessary, stress urgency of case, need for ambulance, etc. If ambulance/external paramedics are coming, somebody has to wait in front of the building and bring them to the injured. 2 nd priority (if 888-call fails) call directly for external paramedics or ambulance: [see previous slide]. Somebody has to wait in front of the building and bring the paramedics to the injured. First-Aid room HCI E3.3 on-call service (via phone no. 888): you must call for an internal paramedic (volunteering ETH employees) to come and provide assistance. In Case of An Accident... (4) Treatment or check-up at the hospital (Waidspital is the closest hospital): a) If necessary, ask emergency office (phone 888) to organize your transport (ambulance). b) In less severe cases, take bus no. 69 to the stop Waidspital. The injured must always be accompanied by a 2 nd person. c) If you go by car: have 3 rd person drive you (driver cannot take care of injured!) The Waidspital has no ophthalmology department Eye injuries must be treated at the Universitätsspital! (Frauenklinikstrasse 24, 8091 Zürich, take bus no. 69 to the stop Milchbuck, then tram no. 9 [direction Triemli ] or 10 [direction Hauptbahnhof ] to the stop ETH - Universitätsspital ). Inform ETH emergency office (phone 888) when all problems have been solved and your case can be closed. September 9,

In Case of An Accident... (5) All accidents (even small ones) must be reported to the HCI Safety Commission ( report to Carlo Thilgen: see next slide). The use of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers etc. (where? what?) must be reported as well ( replacement!). If you have an accident that needs medical treatment, you have to report it also to Irma Näf at your earliest convenience to assure coverage by your work accident insurance (accident declaration form at If you use items from the 1 st aid kits, make sure they are replaced later on. Accident Report Send report to Carlo Thilgen by Name(s) and position of the person(s) involved Date & time of the accident Building, room-number What happened? (facts only, no interpretation) What was the result? What measures were taken? What was the result? What is the current status? Will additional med. treatment (checkup) be required? What safety equipment was used? (description, location necessary for replacement!) Property damage has to be reported in detail (necessary for possible coverage by insurance). September 9,
