3 1. Introduction The Mini-Pro series instruments are compact, lightweight, plug-n-play sensors designed for measurement of the partial pressure of gas in liquids. The Mini-Pro sensors are designed for applications involving immersion in water, oil, or water and oil mixtures. The instruments combine an oil resistant, advanced matrix interface (patent pending) with a compact temperature and pressure compensated NDIR detector. The Mini-Pro TM series operate through rapid diffusion of gas from liquids through a hydrophobic membrane to a non-dispersive infrared detector. Revision

The effect is two-fold, 1) particles and dissolved solids that are falling through the water column will not come to rest on the semi-permeable membrane through which the senor equilibrates with surrounding waters, and 2) it allows the release of any gas bubbles that become entrapped during deployment or formed in situ. 6 3. Maintenance and Calibration 3.1 Gas Transfer Interface The gas transfer interface is an advanced semi-permeable membrane. The membrane assembly should never be disassembled. The membrane and sensor face plate are engineered to minimize biofouling, however, under most conditions, biofilms will slowly develop on the surface of the membrane under operating conditions. This leads to two effects, 1) a slowdown of the equilibration rate due to decreased permeability of the membrane, and in rare instances, 2) the production of CO 2 by organisms forming biofilms can result in erroneous data. Care should be taken to ensure that the interface is not damaged through scratching or extreme gas overpressure. Small surface scratches on the interface can result in sudden failure and flooding of the instrument under large pressures, either hydrostatic or dissolved gas pressure. Cleaning of the interface, section 3.2, should be strictly adhered to. In areas when total dissolved gas pressure (TDGP) is substantially above atmospheric pressure, caution is required when removing the instrument from water. As water pressure compresses the membrane against a pressure plate when submerged, any gas pressure buildup on the inside can result in bulging of the membrane when removed from immersion. In cases of high TDGP, it is recommended to slowly bring the instrument to the surface while monitoring gas pressure. The excess gas pressure will slowly dissipate as the instrument approaches waters in equilibrium with the atmosphere. Revision

7 3.2 Cleaning the Interface Biofilms can develop on the interface and cause interference to the signal and response time of the instrument. Regular cleaning can minimize these effects. To clean the membrane interface: 1) Prepare a cleaning solution as follows. In an open container, add 50 ml of liquid laundry detergent to 20 liters of fresh water. 2) Place the instrument into the container and use a small water pump to direct the solution onto the membrane surface for 30 minutes. 3) Drain the container and refill with fresh water only. 4) Rinse the interface with freshwater using a water pump to circulate water across the membrane for 10 minutes. 5) Repeat steps 4 and 5. 6) If biofilms remains, repeat the process and extend step 2 from 30 minutes to 2-12 hours. Caution: Do NOT touch the membrane for any reason. The use of any object (sponge for example) to clean the interface can result in scratching by dragging particles across the membrane surface. 5.3 Storage of Instrument Before storage or periods between uses, the Mini-Pro sensor requires cleaning of the interface, see above. If the interface is not cleaned prior to drying, any biofilms present on the membrane will become much more difficult to remove. Once cleaned, the instrument can be stored, ensuring that the membrane interface is well protected from any potential damage. Revision

8 4. Warranty Pro-Oceanus Mini-Pro series instruments are covered by a 1-Year Limited Warranty 1. For a period of one year after the date of original shipment, products manufactured by Pro-Oceanus Systems Inc. are warranted to function properly and be free of defects in materials and workmanship. Should a Pro-Oceanus Systems Inc. instrument fail during the warranty period, please return it freight pre-paid to our factory. Pro-Oceanus Systems Inc. will repair it (or at our option, replace it) at no charge, and pay the cost of shipping it back to the customer. Modifications / Exceptions / Exclusions 2. Gas permeable membranes, rigid permeable membrane supports, support screens, absorbents, batteries, and other consumable/expendable items are not covered under this warranty. 3. Damage to the sensor or other internal electronics as a result of flooding from either a punctured membrane or an improperly applied o-ring seal is not covered under this warranty. Care must be taken to deploy instruments according to procedures described in this manual to minimize the possibility of damage due to flooding. 4. Corrosion damage is not covered under this warranty. Enhanced corrosion activity and damage may result from improper electrical isolation between the Pro-Oceanus instrument and any supporting platforms attached to the instrument. 5. Welded mounting tabs and other mechanisms used to mount Pro-Oceanus Systems Inc. instruments to ships, buoys, mooring lines etc., are not covered under this warranty. Pro-Oceanus Systems Inc. expects the best and safest engineering practices to be applied by knowledgeable and experienced persons during the deployment and recovery of their instruments and cannot be held liable for any injuries or damages incurred during use of their instruments. 6. This warranty is void if the instrument has been damaged by accident, mishandled, altered, or repaired by the customer where such treatment has affected its performance or reliability. In the event of such abuse by the customer, repair costs plus two-way freight costs will be borne by the customer. Instruments found to be defective should be returned to Pro-Oceanus Systems Inc., clearly marked as fragile goods, and carefully packaged in the transport/shipping box in which the instrument was sent from Pro-Oceanus.
