1 Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. 2012, 4 (3): Alication of bi-directional static loading test to dee foundations Guoliang Dai 1, 2*, Weiming Gong 1, 2 1 School of Civil Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, , China 2 Key Laboratory for RC and PRC Structures of the Ministry of Education, Southeast University, Nanjing, , China Received 16 June 2011; received in revised form 7 August 2011; acceted 5 October 2011 Abstract: Bi-directional static loading test adoting load cells is widely used around the world at resent, with increase in diameter and length of dee foundations. In this aer, a new simle conversion method to redict the equivalent ile head load-settlement curve considering elastic shortening of dee foundation was ut forward according to the load transfer mechanism. The roosed conversion method was alied to root caisson foundation in a bridge and to large diameter ie iles in a sea wind ower lant. Some new load cells, test rocedure, and construction technology were adoted based on the alications to different dee foundations, which could enlarge the alication scoes of bi-directional loading test. A new tye of bi-directional loading test for ie ile was conducted, in which the load cell was installed and loaded after the ie ile with secial connector has been set u. Unlike the conventional bi-directional loading test, the load cell can be reused and shows an evident economic benefit. Key words: dee foundations; bi-directional static loading test; root caisson foundation; large diameter ie ile 1 Introduction In China, a number of major construction rojects, such as high-rise buildings, river- or sea-crossing exressway bridges, high-seed railways, wind ower lants, and harbors, are under construction or to be built in urban and coastal regions. Dee foundations are frequently observed in heavy-load and large-san construction rojects. For the large alied loads, the bi-directional static loading test can be adoted (Osterberg, 1984), and it is also called self-balanced test in China (Gong et al., 2002). The load cell in the bi-directional static loading test is basically hydraulically driven. The high caacity and one-off jack-like device is installed within the foundation unit at the chosen location, where it is tyical half way down the caacity length of the foundation (Osterberg, 1984, 1989, 2001; England, 2000, 2003). The Osterberg-cell (O-cell) based bi-directional loading test is now widely used around the world (Castelli and Fan, 2002; Castelli and Wilkins, 2004; Russo et al., 2003; Seol and Jeong, Doi: /SP.J * Corresonding author. Tel: ; daigl@seu.edu.cn Suorted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China ( ) and the Priority Academic Program Develoment (PAPD) Project of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions 2009; Fellenius and Ann, 2010). The bi-directional loading test results are used to lot an equivalent to-down load-settlement curve (Osterberg, 1998), and multilevel load cell test is now emloyed frequently (England, 2009). Generally, the ile head settlements in bi-directional static loading tests are calculated by (1) the side shear load-dislacement curve, obtained from the uward movement of the to of the load cell, and (2) by the end bearing load-dislacement curve, obtained from the downward movement of the bottom of the load cell. The original method roosed by Osterberg (1998) assumes that (1) ile is a rigid body, (2) the movements of the ile head and bottom are the same, and (3) the uward skin friction is equal to the downward skin friction. The equivalent ile head settlement is obtained by adding the side friction to the end bearing load at the same deflection. However, the ortion of the elastic shortening of the ile has significant effect on settlement accuracy for long iles (Lee and Park, 2008). The ile head settlement may be underestimated by this method. In order to overcome the limitations of the original method, Fellenius et al. (1999) adoted a numerical method to obtain the load-head settlement curves of rigid and non-rigid equivalent iles. The bearing caacities and the factors of safety decrease when elastic comressions of the iles are considered. Gong et al. (2002) roosed the recise and

2 270 Guoliang Dai et al. / J Rock Mech Geotech Eng. 2012, 4 (3): aroximate conversion methods based on the theory of elasticity. Numerous roject examles have indicated that the recise method is aroriate for the ractical rojects (Dai et al., 2005). Lee and Park (2008) roosed a simlified elastic method for constructing a realistic ile load-settlement curve. The shae factor deendent on skin friction distribution is considered for calculating the elastic shortening of the iles. The results obtained from the simlified elastic method are similar to those by static loading test, and the develoment of aroximate method is beneficial to the erformance study of ile tests. In re-holed foundation, the load cell can be embedded at the chosen location with reinforced cage and then concrete is laced through tremie ie. However, in the driven ie iles, esecially in oen-ended iles, the load cell is usually laced at the bottom of the ile, because it is not racticable to lace load cell in other locations during installation of the ile. So it is not suitable for ie iles, in which the end bearing caacity is less than the side friction. Therefore, a new bi-directional loading test should be develoed for large-diameter steel ie ile. Based on this, a relatively simle method is roosed in this aer. The engineering alications of bi-directional static loading test are also introduced to root caisson and ie ile foundations. 2 Equivalent conversion method for the bi-directional loading test In the bi-directional loading test, the testing ile is loaded by the embedded load cell in uward and downward directions. According to the relationshi between the settlement s and the alied load Q, the uward and downward Q-s curves can be obtained. From the two Q-s curves and the corresonding s-lgt (t is the loading time) and s-lgq curves, the bearing caacities of both uer and lower segments of the testing ile can be determined. The equiments used for field cast-in-situ ile tests are shown in Fig. 1 (Gong et al., 2002). When the load is alied through the load cell, it works in two directions. The lower segment of the ile balances the alied load through end bearing load and side friction, while the uer segment through side friction. There are two stages to convert the bi-directional load-settlement curve to the equivalent ile head load-settlement curve, i.e. determining the equivalent load and obtaining the settlement of ile head. Data acquisition system Shaft side shear Dislacement transducers Reference beam Hydraulic um with ressure gauge Oil ie Steel telltale rods Telltale casings Load cell Shaft end bearing Fig. 1 Sketch of bi-directional static loading test. The equivalent load at the to of the ile can be determined from the bi-directional loading test results (Gong et al., 2002): Qu G Q Qdown (1) where Q u and Q down are the selected or interolated loads with resect to the selected dislacement in uward and downward load- dislacement curves, resectively; G is the deadweight of uer ile segment; is the conversion coefficient for uer ile segment from uward friction in the bi-directional loading test to downward friction in to-loaded test, which is deendent on soil roerties. If the selected dislacement is larger than the maximum dislacement of any other resistance comonent that does not reach the ultimate values, the extraolation method is necessary to obtain the load alied. The load-settlement curve for the ile can be fitted by a hyerbolic curve. The ile head settlement is the sum of the elastic comression ( s1 ) of uer ile segment subjected to the downward load ( Q down ), the elastic comression ( s2 ) of uer segment subjected to the ile side friction ( Q s ), and the net settlement of the uer ile. The net settlement of the uer ile is the total movement of the to of the lower ile ( s down ). Note that unit skin friction ( q sm ) is assumed to be constant at each segment (uer and lower side shears). Fig. 2 shows the comonents of the ile head settlement under static loading test.

With refabricated roots driven into soils through reserved holes in an installed caisson (Fig. 4), the small-size root caisson can give better load-dislacement erformances than tyical caissons or long iles. (c) Layout of roots. Fig. 4 Sketch of caisson (unit: cm). Comared with a tyical caisson foundation, the small-size root caisson has its benefits, including avoiding differential settlement of ile foundations and saving engineering costs. The detailed root caisson construction rocess is introduced as follows. First, the caisson is installed to a designed deth as a tyical caisson, excet that a olyethylene late matching the size of the root is ositioned at the location of root installation beforehand. During the

4 272 Guoliang Dai et al. / J Rock Mech Geotech Eng. 2012, 4 (3): caisson installation, the late must resist lateral earth ressure and revent water seeing into the caisson. When driving a root, the late must be easily smashed into small ieces with nothing left at the root ti; otherwise, the driving rocess would be much difficult due to an enlarged root ti. Second, after the caisson is installed, all refabricated roots must be driven into the soils by a hydraulic jack from the inside of caisson, starting from the bottom of the caisson to the to. After root enetration, the root end is welded to the caisson and the inner ring concrete is cast to form a whole caisson. Using a combination of conventional large caisson and long iles, the root caisson artly changes the load transfer mechanism along the caisson and shows a good global stiffness. To investigate the vertical bearing caacity of the root caisson foundation, four grous of field bi-directional static loading tests have been conducted in two root caisson foundations (caisson No. 5 with 6 m in diameter, 39 m in height and 14 layers of roots; caisson F with 6 m in diameter, 47 m in height and 17 layers of roots) in Maanshan Yangtze River Bridge. The arameters of caissons are listed in Table 1. The load cell is shown in Fig. 5. The distance between the adjacent layers is 200 cm, and six iles are installed in each layer. Using the roosed equivalent conversion method, the equivalent conversion curves of the caissons No. 5 and F with and without roots are shown in Fig. 6. The results show that the root caisson foundations have a larger vertical bearing caacity than common caisson foundations with imrovement amlitude of 52% for caisson No. 5 and 44% for caisson F, resectively. The root caisson foundation can be an alicable choice for the anchor foundation of susension bridge. 3.2 Large diameter steel ie ile The sea wind ower lant near the East Sea Bridge is the first sea wind ower lant in China with installed caacity of 102 MW at resent. It includes 34 offshore wind ower sets with caacity of 3 MW each. Each foundation is comosed of a concrete ile ca on 8 inclined steel ie iles of 1.7 m in diameter. The steel ie iles are made of Q345C steel. The uer ie wall thickness for steel ie ile is 30 mm, and the lower wall thickness is 25 mm. The uer art of the steel ie ile, 30 m below the ile head, is filled with concrete C30. The arameters of ie iles PZ1 and PZ2 are shown in Table 2. The site-secific soils are listed in Table 3. The bi-directional static loading test is used in reholed foundation. However, in the driven or jacked ie iles, the load cell cannot be welded on ie ile at the designed location, esecially in oen-ended ie ile. Therefore, a new bi-directional static loading test device is develoed for large diameter ie iles, as shown in Fig. 7. The testing rocedure is the same as that of the conventional bi-directional loading test. The installation rocedures of instruments including load cell are listed as follows: Table 1 Parameters of caissons. (3) The strain gauges are welded outside the steel ie ile under the rotection of the angular steel. (4) During the transortation of the secial junction, it should be ket horizontal, and heavy ressuring and crashing should be avoided to revent the distortion of ie ile. (5) The soil inside the steel ie ile over the junction should be cleared away, ensuring that no fillings above the bottom of secial junction are left. (6) The ile head should be covered to revent other sundries from falling inside after clearing u the soil. (7) The load cell and related dislacement instruments are mounted on the secial junction. The secial junction should be installed smoothly and slowly to avoid rotating. After the test, the load cell can be reused through susending the retractable claws by crane. The bi-directional loading test was conducted during August 7 16, The equivalent conversion curves are shown in Fig. 8 using the roosed equivalent conversion method. Table 4 shows the bearing caacity of iles. High-strain dynamic test of ile PZ1 was conducted on July 7, 2008 by PDA iling analyzer with D-220 diesel hammer. The test results of ile PZ1 are shown in Table 5. It is very close to the results obtained by the bi-directional loading test.

The develoment of the bi-directional loading test for the high bearing caacity of iles gives engineers a new and owerful tool to evaluate the bearing characteristics of iles. The bi-directional loading test results could be analyzed in the same way as the conventional test results using equivalent conversion curve. The following conclusions can be drawn: (1) A new conversion method is ut forward, which can consider the influences of conversion coefficient and elastic shortening on the bearing caacities and settlements. The equivalent ile head load-settlement curve can be calculated from bi-directional loading test, although the differences in load transfer mechanism from conventional loading test are observed. (2) To determine the bearing caacities of the root caisson foundation, the bi-directional loading test is erformed. Secial combined load cells are designed in the test which enlarges the alication scoes of bi-directional loading test. (3) A new technology of bi-directional static loading test has been develoed for large diameter steel ie iles comared with conventionally driven iles test. In the test, the secial junctions and load cells with retractable claws are designed. The new bi-directional loading test could be widely used in offshore latform with large diameter ie iles. Although the bi-directional static loading test is becoming a common ractice in dee foundations with large bearing caacity, there are some differences in load transfer between bi-directional loading test and conventional to-down loading test, for which further study to construct a reasonable equivalent to-down load-settlement curve is needed. Acknowledgements The authors would thank those individuals for their assistances and suorts in erforming the bi-directional static loading tests in many bridges and building rojects.
