Appications The buit-in sensors of this watch measure direction, barometric pressure, temperature and atitude. Measured vaues are then shown on the dispay. Such features make this watch usefu when hiking, mountain cimbing, or when engaging in other such outdoor activities. Warning! The measurement functions buit into this watch are not intended for taking measurements that require professiona or industria precision. Vaues produced by this watch shoud be considered as reasonabe representations ony. ENGLISH The watch s Atimeter Mode cacuates and dispays reative atitude based on barometric pressure readings produced by its pressure sensor. This means that readings taken at different times at the same ocation may produce different atitude vaues due to changes in barometric pressure. Aso note that the vaue dispayed by the watch may be different from the actua eevation and/or sea eve eevation indicated for the area where you are ocated. When using the watch s atimeter whie mountain cimbing, be sure to perform reguar caibration in accordance with the oca atitude (eevation) indications. For more information, see To specify a reference atitude vaue (page E-46). Whenever you use the digita compass of this watch for serious trekking, mountain cimbing, or other activities, be sure aways to take aong another compass to confi rm readings. If the readings produced by the digita compass of this watch are different from those of the other compass, perform bidirectiona caibration of the digita compass to ensure more accurate readings. Direction readings and digita compass caibration wi not be possibe if the watch is in the vicinity of a permanent magnet (magnetic accessory, etc.), meta objects, high-votage wires, aeria wires, or eectrica househod appiances (TV, computer, cephone, etc.) E E-1 About This Manua Second Hand Mode Hand Crown Hour Hand Minute Hand Depending on the mode of your watch, digita dispay text appears either as dark fi gures on a ight background, or ight fi gures on a dark background. A exampes in this manua are shown using dark fi gures on a ight background. Button operations are indicated using the etters shown in the iustration. that the product iustrations in this manua are intended for reference ony, and so the actua product may appear somewhat different than depicted by an iustration. Using the Crown Crown Loosen The iustrations beow show the different crown operations. The crown of this watch is a screw in ock crown. Before using the crown, you must fi rst rotate it towards you to oosen it. After performing crown operations, be sure to press the crown in ighty as you screw it back in. To maintain water resistance and avoid impact damage to the crown, be sure to screw it back in when you are not using it. Pu out Rotate Push in E-2 E-3 High-speed Movement You can use either of the crown operations described beow to move watch hands or indicators at high speed. HS1: Can be used to move both hands and dispay indicators. HS2: Can be used when setting the hour and minute manuay to move the hands at high speed. To start HS1 high-speed movement Whie the crown is pued out, rotate it rapidy away from you (forward) or towards you (reverse) unti the desired HS1 high-speed movement starts. To start HS2 high-speed movement Whie HS1 high-speed movement is in progress, again rotate the crown rapidy, away from you (forward) or towards you (reverse) in the same direction as the HS1 movement unti HS2 high-speed movement starts. If you do not perform any operation for more than two minutes after puing out the crown, the indicator shown beow wi appear and crown operations wi become disabed. If this happens, push the crown back in and then pu it out again to re-enabe crown operations. Puing out the crown whie the watch is in a mode that does not aow confi guration of any settings wi cause the indicator shown beow to appear. If this happens, push the crown back in and ock it. The indicator shown beow aso appears when performing hand home position adjustment. See Hand Home Position Adjustment (page E-29) for more information. 1 second You can use high-speed movement in the foowing cases: when changing the time and/or date setting in the Timekeeping Mode, Word Time Mode, Countdown Timer Mode, or Aarm Mode, or when performing magnetic decination ange caibration, atitude caibration, barometric pressure caibration, or temperature caibration operations. To stop high-speed movement Rotate the crown in the direction that is opposite that of the current high-speed movement or press any button. E-4 E-5 Things to check before using the watch 1. Check the battery power eve. Hod down B for at east two seconds to enter the Timekeeping Mode and dispay the battery power eve. The battery power eve wi be indicated as H or M on the eft side of the digita dispay. NO Does any one of the foowing conditions exist? L fashing on the digita dispay. CHARGE is f ashing on the dispay. YES Battery power indicator Power is ow. Charge the watch by pacing it in a ocation NEXT where it is exposed to ight. For detais, see Charging the Watch (page E-12). Go to step 2. YES The watch is charged suffi cienty. For detais about charging, see Charging the Watch (page E-12). 2. Check the Home City and the dayight saving time (DST) setting. Use the procedure under To configure Home City and summer time settings (page E-24) to configure your Home City and dayight saving time settings. Proper Word Time Mode data depends on correct Home City, time, and date settings in the Timekeeping Mode. Make sure you confi gure these settings correcty. 3. Set the current time. See Confi guring Current Time and Date Settings (page E-26). The watch is now ready for use. When L is fashing, the second hand wi jump at two-second intervas. The generated power charges a buit-in rechargeabe battery, which powers watch operations. The watch charges whenever it is exposed to ight. Charging Guide Whenever you are not wearing the watch, eave it in a ocation where it is exposed to ight. Best charging performance is achieved by exposing the watch to the strongest ight avaiabe. When wearing the watch, make sure that its face is not bocked from ight by the seeve of your cothing. The watch may enter a seep state (page E-18) if its face is bocked by your seeve even ony partiay. Aowing the watch to become very hot can cause its iquid crysta dispay to go bank (totay back or totay white, depending on the watch mode). The appearance of the LCD shoud become norma again when the watch returns to a ower temperature. Turn on the watch s Power Saving function (page E-18) and keep it in an area normay exposed to bright ight when storing it for ong periods. This heps to ensure that power does not run down. Storing the watch for ong periods in an area where there is no ight or wearing it in such a way that it is bocked from exposure to ight can cause power to run down. Expose the watch to bright ight whenever possibe. Power Leves Hod down B for at east two seconds to enter the Timekeeping Mode. You can get an idea of the watch s power eve by observing the battery power indicator on the dispay. Leve Battery Power Indicator Function Status 1 (H) A functions enabed. Warning! Leaving the watch in bright ight for charging can cause it to become quite hot. Take care when handing the watch to avoid burn injury. The watch can become particuary hot when exposed to the foowing conditions for ong periods. The f ashing L indicator at Leve 3 (L) tes you that battery power is very ow, and that exposure to bright ight for charging is required as soon as possibe. Once the battery reaches Leve 2 (M) after faing to Leve 5, reconfi gure the current time, date, and other settings. Dispay indicators reappear as soon as the battery is charged from Leve 5 to Leve 2 (M). Leaving the watch exposed to direct sunight or some other very strong ight source can cause the battery power indicator to show a reading temporariy that is higher than the actua battery eve. The correct battery eve shoud be indicated after a few minutes. A data stored in memory is deeted, and the current time and a other settings return to their initia factory defauts whenever battery power drops to Leve 5 and when you have the battery repaced. A dark environment whie battery power is at Leve 4 wi cause the eve to drop to Leve 5. Expose the watch to bright ight whenever possibe. The Home City setting reverts to the initia defaut of TYO (Tokyo) whenever the battery power eve drops to Leve 5 or when you have the rechargeabe battery repaced. If this happens, change the Home City to the setting you want (page E-24). Jumps at two-second intervas Low battery aert When battery power reaches Leve 3, the second hand of the watch wi jump at 2-second intervas in the Timekeeping Mode to et you know that charging is required. 3 Power Recovery Mode Performing mutipe sensor, iumination, or beeper operations during a short period may cause the recovery indicator (RECOVER) to start fashing on the dispay. This indicates that the watch is in the power recovery mode. Iumination, aarm, countdown timer aarm, houry time signa, and sensor operations wi be disabed unti battery power recovers. Battery power wi recover in about 15 minutes. At this time, the recovery indicator (RECOVER) wi stop f ashing. This indicates that the functions isted above are enabed again. Frequent f ashing of the recovery indicator (RECOVER) indicates that battery power is ow. Expose the watch to bright ight as soon as possibe. Even if battery power is at Leve 1 (H) or Leve 2 (M), the Digita Compass Mode, Barometer Mode, Thermometer Mode or Atimeter Mode sensor may be disabed if there is not enough power avaiabe. This is indicated when the recovery indicator (RECOVER) is fashing. Frequent f ashing of the recovery indicator (RECOVER) probaby means that remaining battery power is ow. Leave the watch in bright ight to aow it to charge. E-16 E-17 Power Saving When turned on, Power Saving enters a seep state automaticay whenever the watch is eft for a certain period in an area where it is dark. The tabe beow shows how watch functions are affected by Power Saving. For information about enabing and disabing power saving, see To turn Power Saving on or off (page E-89). There actuay are two seep state eves: dispay seep and function seep. Eapsed Time in Dark Hands and Dispay Operation 60 to 70 minutes (dispay seep) 6 or 7 days (function seep) E-18 Bank dispay, second hand stopped. Bank dispay, a hands stopped at 12 o cock. If the watch is aready in a seep state when 6:00 AM arrives, however, it wi remain in the seep state. The watch wi not enter a seep state whie it is in the Stopwatch Mode or Countdown Timer Mode. The watch wi not enter a seep state whie barometric pressure change indication is enabed (page E-63). To return to the Timekeeping Mode from any other mode, hod down B for about two seconds. Button operations are provided for direct access to the Timekeeping, Digita Compass, and Atimeter modes. Auto Return Features The watch automaticay returns to the Timekeeping Mode from other modes if the crown is not pued out or if no button operation is performed for a preset amount of time. 4 Configuring Home City Settings There are two Home City settings: actuay seecting the Home City and seecting either standard time or dayight saving time (DST). Second Hand City code To configure Home City and summer time settings 1. In the Timekeeping Mode, pu out the crown. CITY wi f ash on the digita dispay indicating that the Home City setting can be changed. For detais about city codes, see the City Code Tabe at the back of this manua. 2. Rotate the crown to move the second hand to the city code of the city you want you use as your Home City. 3. Press B to dispay the DST setting screen. 4. Rotate the crown away from you to switch between the DST settings as shown beow. DST off (OFF) DST on (ON) that you cannot switch between standard time and dayight saving time (DST) whie UTC is seected as your Home City. 5. After the settings are the way you want, push the crown back in. Dayight Saving Time is turned on when the DST indicator is on the dispay. After you specify a city code, the watch wi use UTC* offsets in the Word Time Mode to cacuate the current time for other time zones based on the current time in your Home City. * Coordinated Universa Time, the word-wide scientifi c standard of timekeeping. The reference point for UTC is Greenwich, Engand. E-24 E-25 Configuring Current Time and Date Settings To change the current time and date settings 1. In the Timekeeping Mode, pu out the crown. This wi cause CITY to f ash on the digita dispay. 2. Press D. This wi cause HOUR-MIN to f ash on the digita dispay. The second hand wi point to either A (a.m.) or P (p.m.) This is the time setting mode. In the foowing steps, each press of B cyces between settings as shown beow. City code Home City/DST Hour, minute Hour 3. Rotate the crown to change the minute setting. 4. Press B. This wi cause HOUR to f ash on the digita dispay. 5. Rotate the crown to change the hour setting. 6. Press B. This causes the currenty set year, month, and day to appear on the digita dispay, with the year setting f ashing. 7. Rotate the crown to adjust the year setting. 8. Press B. This causes the currenty set date (month, day) to f ash on the dispay. 9. Rotate the crown to adjust the month and day setting. Pressing B wi return to the hour and minute setting screen. 10. After the settings are the way you want, push the crown back in. This wi cause timekeeping to start from 0 seconds. Month, day Year E-26 E-27 For information about seecting a Home City and confi guring the DST setting, see Confi guring Home City Settings (page E-24). Whie 12-hour timekeeping is in use, P (p.m.) is dispayed from noon to midnight (11:59 p.m.) A (a.m.) is dispayed from midnight to noon (11:59 a.m.) These indicators are not dispayed whie 24- hour timekeeping (dispays times from 00:00 to 23:59) is being used. The watch s buit-in fu automatic caendar makes aowances for different month engths and eap years. Once you set the date, there shoud be no reason to change it except after you have the watch s rechargeabe battery repaced or after power drops to Leve 5 (page E-14). The day of the week changes automaticay when the date changes. To switch between 12-hour and 24-hour timekeeping 1. Pu out the crown. 2. Press B five times. This causes the current timekeeping setting (12H or 24H) to f ash on the digita dispay. 3. Rotate the crown to seect either 12-hour (12H) or 24-hour (24H) timekeeping. 4. After the setting is the way you want, push the crown back in. Hand Home Position Adjustment If the watch is exposed to strong magnetism or impact, its hands can go out of aignment with the time on the digita dispay. The watch periodicay adjusts hand aignment automaticay. You can aso use the procedure beow to execute the adjustment operation manuay. To adjust home positions Wait unti a of the hands move to 12 o cock. 1. In the Timekeeping Mode, pu out the crown. 2. Hod down A for at east fi ve seconds unti HAND SET f ashes and then HAND ADJ appears on the digita dispay. This indicates the hand home position adjustment mode. Before performing step 3, beow, make sure that a hands have returned to the 12 o cock position. Pushing the crown back in whie any hand is not at the 12 o cock position wi not perform home position adjustment. 3. Push the crown back in. This wi cause a of the hands (mode, hour, minute, second) to return to their norma positions. After performing home position adjustment, enter the Timekeeping Mode and check to make sure that the anaog hands and the dispay indicate the same time. If they do not, perform home position adjustment again. E-28 E-29 Moving the Hands for Easy Viewing of the Digita Dias You can use the procedure beow to move the anaog hands in order to better view the digita dispay. The anaog hands wi not move whie battery power is ow. To shift the hands and view digita info Whie hoding down L, press B. This wi cause a hands to move to 2 o cock. To return the hands to their norma positions Press any one of the foowing buttons: A, B, C, or D. The hands wi aso return to their norma positions if you do not perform any operation for about 10 seconds. If the hands have moved to 2 o cock because you pued out the crown,* they wi return to their norma positions when you push the crown back in. In this case, the hands wi return to norma timekeeping when you push the crown back in. * The hands wi not move to 2 o cock if you pu out the crown whie confi guring the city code setting (pages E-24, E-82) or the summer time setting (pages E-24, E-82), or whie confi guring time and date settings (page E-26). Auto Hand Shift If the hour hand and/or minute hand is over the digita dispay when a dispayed atitude, barometric pressure, or temperature reading is updated, the hand(s) wi shift automaticay (to 4 o cock or 8 o cock) and provide a better view of the information on the dispay. The hands wi return to their norma position after about three seconds. E-30 E-31

5 Taking Direction Readings You can use the Digita Compass Mode to determine the direction of north, and to check your bearing to a destination. For information about what you can do to improve digita compass reading accuracy, see Caibrating the Bearing Sensor (page E-35) and Digita Compass Precautions (page E-39). To take a direction reading 1. Make sure the watch is in the Timekeeping, Digita Compass, or Atimeter Mode (page E-20). 2. Pace the watch on a f at surface. If you are wearing the watch, make sure that your wrist is horizonta (in reation to the horizon). 3. Point the 12 o cock position of the watch in the direction whose reading you want to take. 4. Press C to start. COMP wi appear in the dispay to indicate that a digita compass operation is in progress. Starting a digita compass operation wi cause the second hand to move momentariy to the 12 o cock position. After that, it wi indicate magnetic north. Bearing to Objective: Northwest N: North E: East W: West S: South Objective North Bearing Indication Meaning Bearing Ange to Objective E-32 E-33 The watch wi return to the Timekeeping Mode about 60 seconds after the direction reading operation is compete. To restart a reading operation from the beginning, press C. Pressing B wi return to the Timekeeping Mode even is a reading operation is in progress. If the second hand does not point exacty at 12 o cock after you perform step 4 above, perform the operation under Hand Home Position Adjustment (page E-29) to adjust it. If the digita dispay contents start to f ash after you perform a reading operation, it means that abnorma magnetism has been detected. Move away from any potentia source of strong magnetism and try taking a reading again. If the probem occurs when you try again, continue to keep away from the source of strong magnetism, perform bidirectiona caibration, and then try taking a reading again. For more information, refer to To perform bidirectiona caibration (page E-37) and Location (page E-40). Digita Compass Readings After the first reading is obtained, the watch wi continue to take digita compass readings automaticay each second for up to 60 seconds. After that, the reading operation wi stop automaticay. The margin of error for the ange vaue and the direction indicator is ±11 degrees whie the watch is horizonta (in reation to the horizon). If the indicated direction is northwest (NW) and 315 degrees, for exampe, the actua direction can be anywhere from 304 to 326 degrees. that taking a direction reading whie the watch is not horizonta (in reation to the horizon) can resut in arge direction reading error. You can caibrate the bearing sensor if you suspect the direction reading is incorrect. E-34 Any ongoing direction reading operation is paused temporariy whie the watch is performing an aert operation (daiy aarm, Houry Time Signa, countdown timer aarm) or whie iumination is turned on (by pressing L). The direction reading operation resumes for its remaining duration after the operation that caused it to pause is fi nished. Caibrating the Bearing Sensor You shoud caibrate the bearing sensor whenever you fee that the direction readings being produced by the watch are off. You can use any one of two different bearing sensor caibration methods: bidirectiona caibration or magnetic decination correction. Bidirectiona Caibration Bidirectiona caibration caibrates the bearing sensor in reation to magnetic north. Use bidirectiona caibration when you want to take readings within an area exposed to magnetic force. This type of caibration shoud be used if the watch becomes magnetized for any reason. To ensure correct direction readings by this watch, be sure to perform bidirectiona caibration before using it. The watch may produce incorrect direction readings if you do not perform bidirectiona caibration. Magnetic Decination Correction With magnetic decination correction, you input a magnetic decination ange (difference between magnetic north and true north), which aows the watch to indicate true north. You can perform this procedure when the magnetic decination ange is indicated on the map you are using. that you can input the decination ange in whoe degree units ony, so you may need to round off the vaue specifi ed on the map. If your map indicates the decination ange as 7.4, you shoud input 7. In the case of 7.6 input 8, for 7.5 you can input 7 or 8. E-35 Precautions about bidirectiona caibration You can use any two opposing directions for bidirectiona caibration. You must, however, make sure that they are 180 degrees opposite each other. Remember that if you perform the procedure incorrecty, you wi get wrong bearing sensor readings. Do not move the watch whie caibration of either direction is in progress. You shoud perform bidirectiona caibration in an environment that is the same as that where you pan to be taking direction readings. If you pan to take direction readings in an open fi ed, for exampe, caibrate in an open fi ed. To perform bidirectiona caibration 1. In the Digita Compass Mode, pu out the crown. This wi cause 1 to appear on the digita dispay, with up arrow ( ) f a s h i n g. 2. Whie keeping the watch horizonta, press C. WAIT wi be shown on the digita dispay whie caibration is in progress. OK, Turn180 wi appear on the digita dispay if caibration is successfu, and then 2 wi appear. If ERR appears on the dispay, press C again to restart the direction reading operation. 3. Rotate the watch 180 degrees. 4. Press C again to caibrate the second direction. WAIT is shown on the dispay whie caibration is being performed. When caibration is successfu, the dispay wi show OK. 5. After caibration is compete, push the crown back in. E-36 E-37 To perform magnetic decination correction 1. You can turn off (OFF) magnetic decination correction by pressing A and C at the same time. The iustration, for exampe, shows the vaue you shoud input and the direction setting you shoud seect when the map shows a magnetic decination of 1 west. 4. After caibration is compete, push the crown back in. Setting a map and finding your current ocation Having an idea of your current ocation is important when mountain cimbing or hiking. To do this, you need to set the map, which means to aign the map so the directions indicated on it are aigned with the actua directions of your ocation. Basicay what you are doing is aigning north on the map with north as indicated by the watch. that map reading skis and experience are required to determine your current ocation and destination on a map. Digita Compass Precautions Magnetic North and True North True north The northery direction can be expressed either as magnetic north or true north, which are different from each other. Aso, it is important to keep in Magnetic north mind that magnetic north moves over time. Magnetic north is the north that is indicated by the neede of a compass. True north, which is the ocation of the North Poe of the Earth s axis, is the north that is normay indicated on maps. The difference between magnetic north and true north is caed the Earth decination. The coser you get to the North Poe, the greater the decination ange. E-38 E-39

6 Location Taking a direction reading when you are near a source of strong magnetism can cause arge errors in readings. Because of this, you shoud avoid taking direction readings whie in the vicinity of the foowing types of objects: permanent magnets (magnetic neckaces, etc.), concentrations of meta (meta doors, ockers, etc.), high tension wires, aeria wires, househod appiances (TVs, persona computers, washing machines, freezers, etc.). Accurate readings are aso impossibe indoors, especiay inside ferroconcrete structures. This is because the meta framework of such structures picks up magnetism from appiances, etc. Accurate direction readings are impossibe whie in a train, boat, air pane, etc. Storage The precision of the bearing sensor may deteriorate if the watch becomes magnetized. Because of this, you shoud store the watch away from magnets or any other sources of strong magnetism, incuding: permanent magnets (magnetic neckaces, etc.), concentrations of meta (meta doors, ockers, etc.), and househod appiances (TVs, persona computers, washing machines, freezers, etc.). Whenever you suspect that the watch may have become magnetized, perform the procedure under To perform bidirectiona caibration (page E-37). Specifying Atitude, Barometric Pressure, and Temperature Units Use the procedure beow to specify the atitude, barometric pressure, and temperature units to be used in the Atimeter Mode, Barometer Mode and the Thermometer Mode. When TYO (Tokyo) is seected as the Home City, the atitude unit is set automaticay to meters (m), the barometric pressure unit to hectopascas (hpa), and the temperature unit to Cesius ( C). These settings cannot be changed. To specify atitude, barometric pressure, and temperature units 1. Make sure the watch is in the mode for the type of unit you want to specify (Atimeter, Barometer, or Thermometer Mode). For information about changing modes, see Seecting a Mode (page E-20). 2. Pu out the crown. 3. Press B as many times as necessary unti UNIT appear on the digita dispay. For atitude, press B three times. For barometric pressure and temperature, press B once. 4. Rotate the crown to change the unit setting. 5. After the settings are the way you want, push the crown back in. E-40 E-41 Using the Atimeter Mode The watch takes atitude readings and dispays resuts based on air pressure measurements taken by a buit-in pressure sensor. It aso saves various types of atitude records and data. The dispayed atitude reading is a reative atitude that is cacuated based on measurement of changes in barometric pressure by the watch s pressure sensor. This means that barometric pressure changes can cause readings taken at different times at the same ocation to be different. Aso note that the vaue dispayed by the watch may be different from the actua eevation and/or sea eve eevation indicated for the area where you are ocated. When using the watch s atimeter whie mountain cimbing, it is recommended that you perform reguar caibration in accordance with the oca atitude (eevation) indications. See To specify a reference atitude vaue (page E-46) and Atimeter Precautions (page E-56) for information about how to minimize differences between readings produced by the watch and vaues provided by oca atitude (eevation) indications. Getting Ready Before actuay taking an atitude reading you need to seect an atitude reading interva. Seecting the Atitude Auto Reading Interva You can seect either of the foowing two atitude auto reading interva. 0'05: Readings at one-second intervas for the fi rst three minutes, and then every fi ve seconds for approximatey the next hour 2'00: Readings at one-second intervas for the fi rst three minutes, and then every two minutes for approximatey the next 12 hours If you do not perform any button operation whie in the Atimeter Mode, the watch wi return to the Timekeeping Mode automaticay after 12 hours (atitude auto reading interva: 2'00) or after one hour (atitude auto reading interva: 0'05). To specify the atitude auto reading interva 1. In the Atimeter Mode (page E-21), pu out the crown. This wi cause the current atitude reading vaue to appear. 2. Press B. This wi cause INT to appear on the digita dispay, aong with the f ashing current auto reading interva setting. 3. Rotate the crown to seect either fi ve second (0'05) or two minutes (2'00) as the interva setting. 4. After the setting is the way you want, push the crown back in to exit the setting screen. Taking Atitude Readings Use the procedure beow to take basic atitude readings. See Using Reference Atitude Vaues (page E-45) for information about how to make atimeter readings more accurate. See How does the atimeter work? (page E-55) for information about how the watch measures atitude. E-42 E-43 To take atitude readings Atitude Tendency Graph Atitude 1. Make sure the watch is in the Timekeeping, Digita Compass, or Atimeter Mode (page E-20). 2. Press A to start auto atimeter readings. The current atitude vaue is dispayed in units of 1 meter (5 feet). For information about the measurement interva, see page E-42. When you press A above, the second hand may indicate seconds (of the current time) or the atitude differentia (page E-47). The initia second hand function wi be the same as what was seected the ast time you took an atitude reading. To togge between the two second hand functions (indicating seconds or indicating the atitude differentia) press D. To restart a reading operation from the beginning, press A. After you are finished, press B to return to the Timekeeping Mode and stop auto atimeter readings. The watch wi return to the Timekeeping Mode automaticay if you do not perform any operation (page E-22). The measurement range for atitude is 700 to 10,000 meters ( 2,300 to 32,800 feet). The dispayed atitude vaue changes to if an atitude reading fas outside the measurement range. An atitude vaue wi reappear as soon as the atitude reading is within the aowabe range. You can change the unit for dispayed atitude vaues to either meters (m) or feet (ft). See To specify atitude, barometric pressure, and temperature units (page E-41). The atitude tendency graph shows changes in atitude over the past 6 readings whie readings are being taken automaticay. 6 readings ago Current reading 50 meters (10 meters for each bock ) Using Reference Atitude Vaues To minimize the chance of reading error, you shoud update the reference atitude vaue before setting off on a trek or any other activity where you pan to take atitude readings. During a trek, keep checking the readings produced by the watch against atitude information provided by markers and other information, and update the reference atitude vaue as required. Reading error can be caused by changes in barometric pressure, atmospheric conditions, and eevation. Before performing the procedure beow, ook up the atitude of your current ocation on a map, the Internet, etc. E-44 E-45 To specify a reference atitude vaue 1. In the Atimeter Mode, pu out the crown. This wi cause the current atitude reading vaue to f ash on the digita dispay. 2. Rotate the crown to change the atitude vaue in one-meter (fi ve-foot) increments. Change the reference atitude vaue to an accurate atitude reading that you get from a map or other source. You can set the reference atitude vaue within the range of 3,000 to 10,000 meters ( 9,840 to 32,800 feet). Pressing A and C at the same time returns to OFF (no reference atitude vaue), so the watch performs air pressure to atitude conversions based on preset data ony. 3. After the setting is the way you want, push the crown back in to exit the setting screen. Advanced Atimeter Mode Operations Use the information in this section to obtain more accurate atimeter readings, especiay whie mountain cimbing or trekking. Using an Atitude Differentia Vaue Atitude differentia If you specify a reference atitude, the second hand of the watch wi indicate the difference between the current atitude and the reference atitude. The dispayed atitude differentia vaue is updated each time the watch obtains a new atitude reading vaue. Depending on the currenty seected dispay range, the aowabe range for the atitude differentia vaue is 100 meters to 100 meters (100 meters = 328 feet), or 1,000 meters to 1,000 meters (1,000 meters = 3,280 feet). If a reading vaue is outside the aowabe range either OVER ( ) or UNDER ( ) appears on the digita dispay. The second hand wi move to 9 o cock if a sensor reading coud not be taken for some reason or if the reading is outside the aowabe range. See Using the Atitude Differentia Vaue Whie Mountain Cimbing or Hiking (page E-48) for some rea-ife exampes of how to use this feature. E-46 E-47

Using the Atitude Differentia Vaue Whie Mountain Cimbing or Hiking After you specify the atitude differentia start point whie mountain cimbing or hiking, you can easiy measure the change in the atitude between that point and other points aong the way. To use the atitude differentia vaue 1. In the Atimeter Mode, check to make sure that an atitude reading is on the dispay. If an atitude reading is not dispayed, press A to take one. See To take atitude readings (page E-44) for detais. 2. Use the contour ines on your map to determine the difference in atitude between your current ocation and your destination. 3. In the Atimeter Mode, hod down D for at east two seconds to specify your current ocation as the atitude differentia start point. DIFF RESET and then RESET wi appear. The watch wi take an atitude reading, and the second hand wi indicate the atitude differentia. ±0 (±0 meters) wi be dispayed as the atitude differentia at the reference point. Atitude Differentia (Reference ocation, so ±0 m is indicated.) 4. Whie comparing the atitude difference you determined on the map and the watch s atitude differentia vaue, advance towards your destination. If the map shows that the difference in atitude between your ocation and your destination is +80 meters for exampe, you know you wi be nearing your destination when the dispayed atitude differentia vaue shows +80 meters. Use the Data Reca Mode to view data stored in memory. See Viewing Atitude Records (page E-70) for detais. Manuay Saved Records Any time you perform the procedure beow in the Atimeter Mode, the watch wi create and store a record with the currenty dispayed atitude reading, aong with the date and time the reading was taken. There is enough memory to store up to 30 manuay saved records, which are numbered from -01- through To save a reading manuay 1. In the Atimeter Mode, check to make sure that an atitude reading is on the dispay. If an atitude reading is not dispayed, press A to take one. See To take atitude readings (page E-44) for detais. 2. Hod down A unti REC f ashes and then stops f ashing. This wi save the currenty dispayed atitude reading in a manuay saved record, aong with the time and date of the reading. The watch wi return to the Atimeter Mode screen automaticay after the save operation is compete. There is enough memory to store up to 30 manuay saved records. If there are aready 30 manuay saved records in memory, the above operation wi cause the odest record to be deeted automaticay to make room for the new one. E-50 E-51 Auto Save Vaues Auto save vaues are one type of data stored in the memory of your watch. Auto Save Vaues High Atitude (MAX) Low Atitude (MIN) Tota Ascent (ASC) Tota Descent (DSC) These vaues are checked and updated automaticay by the watch as atitude auto measurements are taken. Auto save is performed ony whie the watch is in the Atimeter Mode. Cumuative ascent and cumuative descent vaues are updated whenever there is a difference of at east ±15 meters (±49 feet) from one reading to the next. Auto save vaues aso incude the date and time each vaue was recorded. How High and Low Atitude Vaues are Updated With each auto save reading, the watch compares the current reading against the MAX (high atitude) and MIN (ow atitude) vaues. It wi repace the MAX vaue if the current reading is at east 15 meters (±49 feet) greater than MAX, or the MIN vaue if the current reading is at east 15 meters (±49 feet) ess than MIN. How Cumuative Ascent and Cumuative Descent Vaues Are Updated 620 m Session end point Session start point 320 m 120 m 20 m 0 m The tota ascent and tota descent vaues produced by an Atimeter Mode reading operation session during the exampe cimb iustrated above are cacuated as foows. Tota Ascent: q (300 m) + e (620 m) = 920 m Tota Descent: w (320 m) + r (500 m) = 820 m E-52 E-53 Entering the Atimeter Mode starts a new atitude auto reading session, but it does not reset the current ASC and DSC vaues or change them in any way. This means that the starting ASC and DSC vaues for a new Atimeter Mode auto reading session are the vaues that currenty are in memory. Each time you compete an atitude auto reading session by exiting the Atimeter Mode, the tota ascent vaue of the current session (920 meters in the above exampe) is added to the session s starting ASC vaue. Aso, the tota descent vaue of the current auto reading session ( 820 meters in the above exampe) is added to the session s starting DSC vaue. The high atitude, ow atitude, tota ascent, and tota descent vaues are retained in memory when you exit the Atimeter Mode. To cear vaues, perform the procedure under To deete a specifi c record (page E-73). How does the atimeter work? Generay, air pressure decreases as atitude increases. This watch bases its atitude readings on Internationa Standard Atmosphere (ISA) vaues stipuated by the Internationa Civi Aviation Organization (ICAO). These vaues defi ne reationships between atitude and air pressure. that the foowing conditions wi prevent you from obtaining accurate readings: When air pressure changes because of changes in the weather Extreme temperature changes When the watch itsef is subjected to strong impact There are two standard methods of expressing atitude: absoute atitude, which expresses an absoute height above sea eve, and reative atitude, which expresses the difference between the atitudes of two different paces. This watch expresses atitudes as reative atitude. Height of buiding 130 m (reative atitude) Rooftop at an atitude of 230 m above sea eve (absoute atitude) Sea Leve Reguar caibration of the watch in accordance with vaues provided by oca atitude (eevation) indications is recommended before taking readings in order to maximize reading accuracy (page E-45). 8 Atimeter Precautions This watch estimates atitude based on air pressure. This means that atitude readings for the same ocation may vary if air pressure changes. Do not use this watch for atitude reading or perform button operations whie sky diving, hang giding, or paragiding, whie riding a gyrocopter, gider, or any other aircraft, or whie engaging in any other activity where there is the chance of sudden atitude changes. Do not use this watch for measuring atitude in appications that demand professiona or industria eve precision. Remember that the air inside of a commercia aircraft is pressurized. Because of this, the readings produced by this watch wi not match the atitude readings announced or indicated by the f ight crew. Precautions Concerning Simutaneous Atitude and Temperature Readings For the more accurate atitude readings, eaving the watch on your wrist is recommended in order to maintain the watch at a constant temperature. When taking temperature readings, keep the watch at as stabe a temperature as possibe. Changes in temperature can affect temperature readings. See product specifications (page E-95) for sensor accuracy information. E-56 E-57 Taking Barometric Pressure Readings This watch uses a pressure sensor to measure air pressure (barometric pressure). Barometric pressure graph Barometric pressure To take barometric pressure readings Use B to seect the Barometer Mode (BARO), as shown on page E-20. BARO wi appear on the dispay, indicating that barometric pressure reading is in progress. The resuts wi appear on the dispay after about one second. After a barometric pressure reading operation is started, the watch wi take readings every fi ve seconds for the fi rst three minutes, and then every two minutes after that. The watch wi return to the Timekeeping Mode automaticay if you do not perform any operation for about one hour after entering the Barometer Mode. When you press B above, the second hand may indicate seconds (of the current time) or the barometric pressure differentia (page E-61). To togge between the two second hand functions (indicating seconds or indicating the barometric pressure differentia) press D. Barometric pressure change indicator Barometric pressure Barometric Pressure Barometric pressure is dispayed in units of 1 hpa (or 0.05 inhg). The dispayed barometric pressure vaue changes to if a measured barometric pressure fas outside the range of 260 hpa to 1,100 hpa (7.65 inhg to inhg). The barometric pressure vaue wi reappear as soon as the measured barometric pressure is within the aowabe range. Dispay Units You can seect either hectopascas (hpa) or incheshg (inhg) as the dispay unit for the measured barometric pressure. See To specify atitude, barometric pressure, and temperature units (page E-41). Barometric Pressure Graph Barometric pressure graph Barometric pressure indicates changes in the atmosphere. By monitoring these changes you can predict the weather with reasonabe accuracy. This watch takes barometric pressure reading automaticay every two hours. Readings are used to produce barometric pressure graph and barometric pressure differentia pointer readings. E-58 E-59 Reading the Barometric Pressure Graph The barometric pressure graph shows a chronoogica history of pressure readings. Barometric pressure E-60 The horizonta axis of the graph represents time, with each dot standing for two hours. The rightmost dot represents the most recent reading. The vertica axis of the graph represents barometric pressure, with each dot standing for the reative difference between its reading and that of the dots next to it. Each dot represents 1 hpa. Time The foowing shows how to interpret the data that appears on the barometric pressure graph. Rising barometric pressure indicates that upcoming weather wi improve. Faing barometric pressure indicates that upcoming weather wi deteriorate. If there are sudden changes in weather or temperature, the graph ine of past readings may run off the top or bottom of the dispay. The foowing conditions cause the barometric pressure reading to be skipped, with the corresponding point on the barometric pressure graph being eft bank. Barometric reading that is out of range (260 hpa to 1,100 hpa or 7.65 inhg to inhg) Sensor mafunction Not visibe on the dispay. The barometric pressure graph is not dispayed whie the barometric pressure change indicator is dispayed. Barometric Pressure Differentia Pointer Barometric pressure differentia pointer This pointer indicates the reative difference between the most recent barometric pressure reading indicated on the barometric pressure graph (page E-59), and the current barometric pressure vaue dispayed in the Barometer Mode (page E-58).
