Most activities or processes are broken down into a variety of separate tasks. For each task, consider the hazards, the potential harm or negative outcomes and the conditions required for those negative outcomes to occur. Whenever assessing the health and safety risks associated with a task, always consider the following primary risk factors. The physical activities required to complete the task e.g. repetitive movement, high force, physical exertion, awkward posture The work environment e.g. lighting, work layout, traffic, thermal comfort, working in isolation The nature of the hazard itself e.g. working with chemicals, microorganisms, radiation, machinery, potentially violent clients
2 The individual workers involved, e.g. level of training, skills, experience, health, age, physical capacity The information gathered from the risk assessment process must be used to develop a Safe Work Procedure (SWP). Page 2
3 Task or scenario Storage of flammable liquids in solvent store Hazard/s Flammable liquids; leaks or spills Associated harm, e.g. what could go wrong? Fire, explosion; toxic effects due to skin contact or inhalation; cuts from broken glass; slips and falls. Existing Risk Controls SDS Quantity limited to minor storage as defined in AS Quantity and pack size of PG I liquids kept to a minimum. Maximum container size 20L. Plastic containers used where possible. Room ventilation. Spill kits available. Containers should be capped/sealed when not in use. Fire extinguishers available. Personal protective equipment: lab coat, safety glasses, gloves, face shields. Fire suppression equipments: Spark proof electrical fittings, no mobile phones, no electrical equipments allowed. No ignition sources within 3 m range of the solvent store. Current risk rating Use the Risk Matrix Additional Risk Controls? 1 Residual risk rating Use the Risk Matrix Formation of explosive peroxides Fire, explosion Containers should be inspected and/or discarded according to the schedule outlined in WHS guidelines. Containers exhibiting signs of peroxide formation (e.g. precipitate, layering) should not be opened. Consult SDS for individual chemicals. 1 Always consider whether or not it is possible to eliminated the hazard or hazardous task altogether. If this is not possible, refer to the hierarchy of risk controls.

Physical injuries, Legal obligations, Fire, explosion, health hazards Fire, explosion, toxic effects Decantation has been minimised by ordering smaller pack size for most of the solvents Special work bench devised with ventilation, bunding and earthing cable is used for decanting Two people manual handling procedure used to avoid physical injury Solvent store is equipped with fire suppression devises. Toxic chemicals are stored separately in toxic cabinet in vestibule area. Only flammable solvents are stored in fire suppressed flammables store All the flammable and toxic solvents waste is segregated as required in waste room, separately. (Refer to SWP and RA for waste disposal) Users are required to complete compulsory training and on-site orientation. Up to date list of users maintained and the key is only issued to authorised users. Key issue and return records are maintained. Monthly inspection of premises and stock-take every two months All the bulk solvents usage records are maintained. To minimise this risk on going improvements implemented. Such as centralised and internal purchasing initiated to clear up legacy chemicals. Researchers are requested to dispose/use the old chemicals The total volume of chemicals stored (1100L) is well below the limit (2250L) The flammables room is devised with the heavy duty metal sliding door to contain fire. Spills: Use the spill kit in the laboratory. Follow SWP for dealing with flammable liquid spills. Only tackle spills if you are confident to do so. Notify HazMat (Security 13333) if spill is significant. Exposure: For inhalation seek medical help. Evacuate to fresh air. For skin contact wash area immediately. For significant spills remove lab coat immediately and use safety shower. Seek medical help. For eye contact seek medical help. Use the eye wash station to thoroughly rinse eyes.
