4 2 Tips on using the manual This manual has been written for the device user to ensure a problem-free operation, care and maintenance. Important instructions and information concerning safety and operational reliability have been highlighted. The symbols used in the manual have the following meanings: CAUTION! Working and operating processes which must be observed to the letter to exclude any risk to persons. Working and operating processes which must be observed to the letter to avoid any damage to the device. Technical information to which the device operator must give special attention. The illustrations and diagrams are numbered in sequence within each chapter. Some of these illustrations have keys. References to illustrations within the text e. g. (5.1/2) have the following meaning: 5.1 = Figure = Position 2 in the key to the figure. 5 3 Safety instructions (1) This device has been built according to the latest technical standards and generally accepted safety regulations. Nevertheless, it can constitue a risk to the operator or third parties and a hazard to the device itself or other equipment during use. (2) Only use the device if in perfect working order and for its intended purpose. You must always pay attention to the instruction manual and safety instructions therein and be aware of the risks! Repair any faults which could affect the device s safety immediately by yourself or have these repaired. The device should only be used for grinding and milling using the tools listed and approved in chapter 10. Any other use will be deemed to be contrary to its intended purpose. The manufacturer cannot be held liable for any resulting damages. The risk is borne solely by the user. Correct use also includes compliance with the instruction manual and an observation of the care and maintenance conditions. (3) Keep the instruction manual handy at the device s place of use. (4) Pay attention to and observe generally applicable statutory and otherwise binding regulations relating to accident prevention and environmental protection in addition to the information provided in the instruction manual! CAUTION! (5) All personnel commissioned to work on or with the device must have read this instruction manual, and particularly the safety instructions chapter, before starting work. This applies especially for personnel who only work with the device ocassionally. (6) Stop the device immediately should you notice changes to the device or its operating behaviour that are relevant to its safety. Have these remedied before restarting work. Page 3-1

6 3 Safety instructions (7) Do not carry out any modifications, additions or conversions to the device! This also applies to the installation and adjustment of safety equipment. (8) Spare parts must meet the technical requirements specified by the manufacturer. This can only be guaranteed with original JOKE spare parts. (9) Any work on/with the device may only be carried out by qualified, appropriately trained and authorised personnel. Pay attention to minimum statutory age limits! (10) Wear safety goggles when working with the handpiece for rotating movements. (11) Personnel undergoing training or in a general apprenticeship should only be allowed to work with the machine under the constant supervision of an experienced operator! (12) Restrain from any type of work that could jeopardise your safety. (13) The device may only be used if all protective and safety equipment is in place and in proper working order. (14) Do not leave the device unattended when switched on! (15) Stop and secure the device immediately in the event of malfunctions! Faults must remedied at once. Page 3-2

7 4 Warranty/Identification Joisten & Kettenbaum warrant the correct manufacture of every Joisten & Kettenbaum product which is delivered in accordance with the terms of contract and delivery. This warranty does not cover damages caused by normal wear and tear, incorrect handling, negligent use, the fitting of non-original spare parts, inadequate care and/or a failure to comply with this technical manual. The device may only be used by appropriately trained personnel. If it is not, all warranty claims will be forefeited according to the terms of delivery. Device identification The manufacturer s code, type code, and serial number can be found on the non-slip bush. Page 4-1

8 5 Device Overview Intended use The pneumatic, very light high-speed handpiece has been designed for grinding and milling. Only precision diamond tools and tungsten carbide cutter mills approved for the handpiece may be used. Permissible tools: See Chapter 10 or the Joke Surface Finishing catalogue. 11 5 Device Overview Mode of operation The high-speed handpiece is powered by compressed air. The speed of 320,000 rpm means that the necessary cutting speed is available even with very small tool diameters. The turbine drive has hermetically sealed bearings. Additional lubrication with oil mist may not be provided. The low weight of the handpiece enables sensitive working on even the smallest of components. The head of the handpiece has air slots through which swarf is blown away from the workpiece during operation. The spindle also has a patented Clean-Head cleaning system which safely prevents the penetration of impurities during operation. Tools are changed with a quick-action chuck in the head. Page 5-4

13 7 Operation/Use Place tool in position and connect (1) Fasten maintenance unit to wall or workbench. (2) Connect hose for external air supply to maintenance unit and screw tight (Figure 7.1). 14 7 Operation/Use (4) Push the two hoses for the foot control into the self-locking connections of the maintenance unit (Figure 7.2). Make sure that the red hose is connected to the red connecting piece. (5) Connect handpiece hose to the maintenance unit; connect other end to the connection on the handpiece (Figure 7.2). (6) To hold the hoses in place, stick the hose clips (2 pieces) to the bracket and pass the hoses through these (Figure 7.2) Trial run The pressure controller has been set in the works to zero. Carefully turn the knob in a clockwise direction after connecting the air supply until a pressure of 2.5 bar is reached. (1) Push test arbor firmly into the handpiece collet for the trial run. (2) To unlock the controller knob, pull up and turn. Push knob down again to lock after setting the rated value. (3) Press foot control to switch handpiece on and off and check its perfect function. Please refer to Chapter 8 in the event of problems. Page 7-2

15 7 Operation/Use Commissioning the handpiece (1) Push selected tool firmly into the handpiece collet (Figure 7.3). CAUTION! Use only approved tools - see Chapter 10! Push the tool against a firm base. Use the auxiliary tool when fitting sharp-pointed tools. (2) Press the foot control to switch the handpiece on and off. Adjust the tool speed as required by changing the air pressure at the rotary knob of the pressure reducer. Figure 7.4 Page 7-3

16 7 Operation/Use (3) Turn the release ring on the handpiece fully to the left to eject the tool (Figure 7.4). Figure 7.4 Tips on operation The recommended air pressure to operate the handpiece is 2.5 bar. A higher pressure can lead to a bearing failure. The handpiece requires no additional lubrication. Do not use lubricants! Apply only a slight pressure when grinding and milling with the handpiece. Excessive dirt during work can destroy the bearing and tools. Before using tools check the permissible grinding speeds and tool manufacturer s instructions. Check the tight fit of the tool and tighten collet with the enclosed spanner (see Chapter on Care/Maintenance). Check the maintenance unit regularly. If condensation water and dirt are discovered, drain the water and clean the filter (see Chapter on Care/ Maintenance). CAUTION! Wear safety goggles! Page 7-4

18 9 Care and maintenance 9 Care and maintenance 9.1 Care Clean all parts as necessary with a soft brush or dry cloth. 9.2 Maintenance Changing the collet (1) Unscrew head from handpiece with open-end spanner. Figure 9.1 (2) Hold rotor of head tight, place collet spanner on the square of the collet nut and unscrew collet nut (Figure 9.2). Figure 9.2 The collet nut and guide bush are very small! Keep in a safe place so that they are not damaged or lost! Page 9-1

19 9 Care and maintenance (3) Remove the guide bush behind the collect nut (Figure 9.3). Figure 9.3 (4) Remove the collet with the aid of the auxiliary tool or push out from rear with the test arbor (Figure 9.4). Figure 9.4 (5) Exchange or clean collet and collet holder. (6) Replace collet and collet holder in reverse order. When assembling the collet holder, guide bush and collet nut pay attention to the correct arrangement and position of parts as shown in the illustrations! Page 9-2

21 9 Care and maintenance Exchanging the air filter (1) Unscrew condensate tank. (2) Unscrew and exchange air filter. Make sure that the filter holder and loose gasket are refitted in the same position. Figure 9.6 (3) Screw condensate tank back into place and carry out a functional check. Page 9-4
