8 Donning Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus The ability to don self-contained breathing apparatus NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications 5.3.1, 5.3.2, 5.3.3, 2013 Edition. AFC & PSC Skill Sheet-CVFF-6-2 The candidate, wearing personal protective equipment, shall properly don a self-contained breathing apparatus, and activate the PASS alarm. The candidate may use ONE of the following: Over-the-head method, Coat method, or Seat Mount method. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes 1. Dons SCBA using one of the listed methods and ensures unit is secured and adjusted properly 2. Dons face piece, attaches regulator (if using waist mount regulator, attaches breathing tube to regulator) inhales activating regulator, holds breath for 5 seconds to ensure there are no leaks CRITICAL POINT 3. 9 Inspecting SCBA SCBA is cleaned and maintained NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.1*, 5.5.1, 2013 Edition. AFC & PSC Skill Sheet-CVFF-6-3 The candidate, given a self-contained breathing apparatus, shall demonstrate how to inspect and maintain this unit according to manufacturer s recommendations to ensure the SCBA is ready to use Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes 1. Checks that cylinder is at least 90% full 2. Checks that all gauges work. Cylinder & regulator gauge should read within 10% of each other 3. Checks to see that low pressure alarm is in working condition CRITICAL POINT 4. Checks to ensure that all hose connections are tight & free of leaks 5. Checks to ensure that the face piece is in good condition & the straps are in the fully extended position 6. Checks to ensure that the harness system is in good condition & that all straps are in the fully extended position 7. 10 Changing an Air Cylinder The ability to replace SCBA air cylinders NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.1, 2013 Edition, AFC & PSC Skill Sheet-CVFF-6-6 The candidate, wearing full personal protective equipment, shall demonstrate the proper procedure for changing a SCBA air cylinder using the one person method. The candidate may use any SCBA unit available to his/her department. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 2 minutes 1. Doffs unit using proper procedures 2. Closes cylinder valve on the used bottle and bleeds off pressure - CRITICAL POINT 3. Disconnects the high-pressure coupling from the cylinder and puts the hose coupling on the ground directly in line with the cylinder outlet (ensures grit & liquids cannot enter the end of the unprotected high-pressure hose prior to attaching it to the cylinder outlet valve) 4. Releases the cylinder clamp & removes the empty cylinder and places a new cylinder into the backpack 5. Checks cylinder valve opening & the high-pressure hose fitting for debris and checks condition of O-ring CRITICAL POINT 6. Connects high-pressure hose to cylinder valve opening and opens cylinder valve 7. 11 Operating Portable Fire Extinguishers Extinguish incipient Class A, B, and C fires with portable fire extinguishers NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, , 2013 Edition. AFC & PSC Skill Sheet-CVFF-7-1 The candidate, wearing full protective equipment and given a selection of portable fire extinguishers, shall extinguish a small Class A, B, OR C fire so that the correct extinguisher is chosen, the fire is completely extinguished, and proper extinguisher handling techniques are followed. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 3 minutes 1. Wears complete personal protective clothing 2. Identifies Class of fire (A,B,C) 3. Selects the correct fire extinguisher/agent (verbalizes disrupting electrical current prior to extinguishing if it is a Class C fire) 4. 12 Knots and Hoisting The ability to tie correct knots for hoisting equipment NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.1.2, , 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-CVFF-8-1 The candidate, given a fire service rope(s), shall tie the appropriate knot and hoist ONE of the following pieces of equipment chosen by the Evaluator. Equipment: Pick Head Axe, Exhaust Fan, Uncharged Section of 1 ½ or 1 ¾, Charged Section of 1 ½ or 1 ¾, Roof Ladder, Pike Pole Expected time to complete skill(s) is 7 minutes NOTE TO EVALUATOR: Pick Head Axe: figure eight on a bight & half hitch; Exhaust Fan: figure eight follow through; Uncharged Section of 1½ or 1¾ : clove hitch & half hitch; Charged Section of 1½ or 1¾ : clove hitch & half hitch through the bale; Roof Ladder: figure eight on a bight; Pike Pole: clove hitch & 2 half hitches. 1. 13 Cleaning and Inspecting Rope Clean and maintain ropes according to manufacturer s recommendations or department guidelines.- NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.1.2, 5.5.1, 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-CVFF-8-2 The candidate, given a fire service rope, shall demonstrate the technique for inspecting, cleaning and storing the rope according to manufacturer s recommendations or department guidelines Expected time to complete skill(s) is 4 minutes 1. Inspects entire length of rope for chafing, abrasion, melting and exposure to chemicals 2. Inspects rope by running through hands and checks for soft spots, voids, and any damage in center fibers or on outer sheath 3. Cleans rope, according to manufacturer s guidelines and air dries completely before storage 5. Removes any damaged rope from service and records in log 6. 14 Search and Rescue Conduct search and rescue operations as a member of a team NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.5, 5.3.9, 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-CVFF-9-1 The candidate, wearing PPE including SCBA, shall demonstrate entering a simulated burning and smoke-filled environment, conduct search operations and locate and remove victims if found. The room(s) should be large enough to conduct proper search techniques. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 5 minutes Criteria: Test Retest 1. Sizes up building for hazards, possible egress routes, and safe havens 2. Assesses areas to determine tenability of victims 3. 15 Victim Carries Conduct victim removal methods NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.9, 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-CVFF-9-2 The candidate, wearing PPE, shall demonstrate proper victim removal techniques using ONE of the following techniques: extremity carry, seat carry, or blanket drag method. Other assistants will be made available if applicable. The candidate shall give orders and directions when moving the victim. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 10 minutes EXTREMITY CARRY 1. Kneels at the victim s head & directs other rescuer to victim s feet 2. Directs other rescuer to grasp victim s wrists & pull victim into a sitting position while candidate supports victim s head & neck 3. Slips his/her arms under the victim s arms & around the chest, grasping the wrists when other rescuer releases them 4. Directs other rescuer to face away from the victim & grasp under the victim s knees 5. Stands with other rescuer using proper lifting techniques & carries patient to safety. 17 Victim Drags Rescue downed firefighter and victims NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.9, 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-CVFF-9-3 The candidate, wearing PPE, shall demonstrate proper victim removal techniques using the lift and drag, OR the push and pull drag methods. Other assistants will be made available if applicable. The candidate shall give orders and directions when moving the victim. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 10 minutes Criteria/ Performance Steps: Test Retest LIFT AND DRAG METHOD 1. Locates and assesses victim s condition 2. Takes position at the head of victim 3. Rescuer wraps both arms around victim s torso and locks hands together (or uses webbing or other method to drag victim if unable to stand based on conditions) 4. Using proper lifting technique, lifts victim (if conditions allow) and drags to safety. CRITICAL POINT Candidate must successfully perform 3/4 steps including CRITICAL POINTS PUSH AND PULL DRAG METHOD (For downed firefighter) AS RESCUER #1 OR RESCUER #2 1. Locates and assesses victim s condition and places on back 2. Unfastens waist strap of victim s SCBA and passes one strap through crotch area and refastens CRITICAL POINT 3. For Rescuer 1, locates himself/herself at victim s head and takes hold of SCBA shoulder strap; Rescuer 2 locates himself/herself inside the legs of the downed firefighter, lifting victim s one leg over shoulder; Rescuer 2 head should be high in victim s groin area and shoulder being used to push buttocks of downed fire fighter 4. 18 Rescue Bringing Victim(s) Down Ladder The ability to use ladder operations for rescue NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.9, 2013 Edition. Skill Sheet-CVFF-9-4 The candidate, wearing PPE and provided with an appropriate ladder and a victim, shall bring a simulated unconscious person down the ladder from a safe height. Additional fire fighters should be provided to assist victim out the window and to secure the ladder. Expected time to complete skill(s) is 4 minutes CRADLE CARRY WHEN VICTIM PRESENTED HEAD FIRST 1. Exterior rescuer on ladder at or below windowsill 2. Victim s head is off to one side allowing victim s torso and legs to come across the ladder horizontally with back of victim facing rescuer 3. Descends ladder while grasping the rails leaning inward to control victim 6. 32 Ladders - Using a Leg Lock The ability to work off a ladder and complete an assignment NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 5.3.6, , 2013 Edition.
