Internl Prblems nd Cuses with DCS 2000 nd Mngement In My 1999, Durcell's pckging deprtment hd becme the primry user fr its pckging specifictin mngement sftwre Cntrl System (DCS) 2000 within the Bethel, CT bsed Hedqurters. This specifictin sftwre develped by Mystic Mngement Systems, Inc. hs shrtcmings fr develping n effective pckging dcumenttin system, which negtively effects internl/externl mngement. As result, DCS 2000 limits Durcell's pckging dt mngement prcesses by nt effectively guiding the dcument lifecycle in terms fwrkflw. Durcell's pckging deprtment des nt functin s successfully s it culd, since DCS 2000 is lcking in webbsed technlgy tht ws utilized yers befre the instlltin fdcs Additinlly, it ws never thrughly nlyzed fr its effectiveness in prviding infrmtin t mnufcturing ffilites. The mjr prblem with DCS 2000 is tht it des nt sve time. This ffects hw mngement fllws prcedures fr pckging dcumenttin guidelines. The sftwre technlgy des nt help crete sufficient munt fdcument pprvl/distributin time nd effectiveness fr pckging engineers. Technlgicl supprt cnnt be sufficiently prvided fr DCS 2000 rnlfunctins due t the number ferrrs tht ccur during use. This is becuse the pltfrm (Micrsft Visul FxPr) DCS 2000 ws creted upn prvides limited cpbilities. The interfce it ws creted upn is ls nt lwys userfriendly in the wy it is rgnized, nd cmputer glitches n it ccur frequently. The pckging deprtment's generl dcumenttin needs re t generte nd mnge mteril specifictin dcuments (rtwrk, bill f mterils, CAD drwings, supprting text dcuments, etc.). This cn be ccmplished vi rpid nd effective prcess fr ll new prduct lunches nd nging prduct mdifictins. This specifictin infrmtin is vitl fr btteries t be pckged n time in rder t meet the vrius prductin nd shipment dedlines. The mjrity f pckging engineer's wrkld shuld nt be fcused n hving t fllw lng inefficient prcess when creting r revising dcuments nd then pprving them ne by ne. The fcus shuld be spending mre time n cst svings, new prducts, nd prductivity imprvement prgrms. DCS 2000 is persnl cmputerbsed prgrm nd dtbse tht specificlly ddresses dcumenttin fr pckging cmpnent nd mteril specifictins. The pltfrm fr the dtbse used by DCS 2000, Micrsft Visul FxPr, cntins dt fields fitem cdes r prt numbers fr mny dcument types tht cn smetimes mke it cnfusing fr the verge user t decide wht dcument types t use. Appendix A is list describing ll fdurcell's pckging dcumenttin types. Fr exmple, certin type f dcument cn be fund under severl dcument types. Sme dcument types re imprted int the DCS 2000 templtes nd thers re creted within DCS 2000 templtes. Dcuments cn be creted with ther Windwsbsed pplictins including Adbe Illustrtr, CAD, CAPE, spredsheets, wrd prcessing, nd

14 mny thers (Mystic Hme Pge 1). In essence, DCS 2000 resembles multiuser envirnment put int single system. There re fur min types f pckging dcumenttin t Durcell in DCS 2000: drwing specifictins, bill f mterils (BOMs), grphic specifictins, nd pllet ptterns. Drwing specifictins use AutCAD (Autmted Cmputer Aided Drfting/Design) 2000 sftwre. A user (Durcell drftsmn) develps ll fdurcell's pckging cmpnent drwings. Adbe Acrbt sftwre is used t crete drwing files in published dcument frmt s tht drwings cn be imprted int DCS In DCS 2000, users (Durcell pckging engineers nd dcument crdintrs) crete BOMs within templtes in the dtbse/sftwre. Grphic specifictins re prduced by Durcell vendrs n their wn sftwre, such s Adbe Illustrtr. The rtwrk dcument ends up being in published dcument frmt in rder fr the user (Durcell grphic crdintr) t imprt ny rtwrk int DCS Pllet ptterns re develped in CAPE sftwre tht the users (Durcell pckging engineers) develp fr ll the ptterns. The pllet ptterns re then cnverted int published dcument frmt s tht ny pllet pttern cn be imprted int DCS The BOM is the frmul fr ll kinds f bttery pckging cmpnents (primry pckging, secndry pckging, tertiry pckging, etc.) sequence nd quntity fr cmpletin fthe pckged prduct. Mny tht cme tgether in prper different types f pckging dcumenttin cn g int it lng with ny ther significnt relted dcumenttin tht needs t be included. In Appendix B, views fbom infrmtin within DCS 2000 re given t illustrte wht my g int BOM. Since the BOM is list f pckging cmpnents nd relted dcuments, it is imprtnt t remember tht wellstructured BOM cn simplify plnning wes, keep the prductin line mving, nd ese new prduct intrductin (Grwd

Internlly, plnning demnd mngement needs t hve prt numbers, cmpnent quntities, nd ther relevnt pckging specifictin infrmtin frm the pckging BOM. Smetimes incrrect mfrmtin is cpied frm the BOM int supply chin mngement's sftwre, Enterprise Resurce Pjlnning (ERP) system clled J.D. Edwrds (JDE) by the user. This cretes ineffective cmmunictin between the tw systems. Emplyees hve certin degree f ccuntbility when cpying infrmtin frm ne system t nther. Hwever, there is vilble technlgy tht culd be utilized fr such mjr cmpny s Durcell. The cst f this technlgy wuld be blnced by incresed prcess effectiveness. DCS 2000 nd JDE sftwre shuld be tw systems tht cn be integrted tgether by hving prgrmmed interfce between them. It is hrd t mesure r put price tg n the benefits ftechnlgicl imprvements, but by decresing the chnces f hving incrrect infrmtin sent ut fr prduct shipments nd frecsting, Durcell wuld benefit with respect t custmer nd

Ech SKU verges but 6 cmpnent prts. It is bslutely criticl t Durcell's pertin t hve the crrect prts n the prductin line. Pckging dt hve crucil rle by getting the crrect infrmtin in rder fr it t be prduced nd t nt hve wste ccur. A questinnire (ppendix C) ws given t Durcell ffilites tht re invlved with the pckging dt in rder t determine the externl prblems fdurcell's pckging dcumenttin. In 18 f29 respnses, mjrity fnegtive respnses cme frm mnufcturing plnts (internl mnufcturing nd cntrct pckging). These re very imprtnt cknwledgements, since Durcell's mnufcturing plnts use ll the dcument types pckging engineers develp t the Bethel, CTbsed hedqurters. The hrd cpy fthe BOM's lyut is prblemtic, becuse the design fthe lyut is difficult fr internl/externl ffilites t understnd. Thus, the use f ny kind f specifictin mngement sftwre will increse prcess effectiveness. Of ll the pckging dcuments listed s "ineffective" in the questinnire, the BOM ws listed mst ften s "ineffective." This mens dcumenttin issues ccurred fr mst fthe dcuments listed. BOMs t mst fdurcell's mnufcturing divisins re very difficult fr the user t understnd. Interprettin is difficult fr mnufcturing emplyees wh need t use BOMs. Their understnding is tht the BOMs replced the pckging chrts (the ld style BOM), which prvided users mre infrmtin t pckge the prduct. The BOMs re mre cnfusing nd ften wrng r pper t be wrng. It ws much esier t red nd interpret the ld_style mtrix r chrt tht shwed cmpnents ging int ssemblies frm left t right n the

18 pge. Quntities per item were esy t red nd stright frwrd. The "ld style" pckging chrts listed items in pcking rder, nt numericl rder. The current BOM requires mnufcturing t clculte sme things needed fr them t develp the UPC br cde lbels tht g n inner nd uter crtns. Mnufcturing des nt receive rtwrk in timely mnner, nd they hve even hd t request cpies t times. When inccurte BOMs re issued, mnufcturing hs t request updted BOMs in rder t meet ISO cmplince. They my ls receive rtwrk tht des nt pertin t the crrect mnufcturing plnt nd will usully get either the drwings r the rtwrk; hrdly d they ever receive bth the drwings nd rtwrk tgether. The drwings themselves re effective, but the issue is the timeliness with which they receive them. Furthermre, prduct rrives n the dck withut ny clr stndrds nd withut n updte fthe mesurble print. A cnfusing terminlgy prblem exists in the BOM nd Pckging Chnge Ntifictin (PCN) dcuments. Mnufcturing hs nticed terminlgy issues. Inner crtns, shipper crtns, disply crtns, nd stmping requirements cn be cnfusing. BOMs d nt use cmmnly referred t terms tht mnufcturing uses. Hving ll the relted dcuments listed is ls cnfusing. Wht wuld be mre helpful is cler segregtin f ctul items used t build the prduct (BOM), lng with the relted dcuments. At times, tw revisins fr the sme drwing pper n BOM. The revisin t the tp ppers t be twdigit number with the "0" lwys t the side fthe ctul revisin number. Fr exmple, 2 0 wuld be shwn rther thn 2. Smene nt very fmilir with the BOM prcess wuld mistke tht s revisin 20. Often PCNs will hve nnmnufcturing plnt items n them. Wht is needed is cde tht will tell mnufcturing ifn item is fr their prticulr mnufcturing plnt. This wuld sve time becuse mnufcturing ffilites wuld nt hve t cll the pckging deprtment but

19 infrmtin nt relevnt t tht mnufcturing plnt. Thrughut Durcell, ll ffilites need t strive fr cnsistency f terminlgy nd insure tht ll invlved understnd why certin prt numbers re ssigned (i.e., custm prmtinl cmpnents prt numbers vs. pckging cmpnent prt numbers). The flw nd cnfigurtin f infrmtin t mnufcturing is dne in n unrgnized wy. The biggest infrmtin flw prblem mnufcturing sees is timing incnsistency with regrds t J.D. Edwrds (JDE) sftwre, which is nt DCS 2000 functin. It is nt uncmmn t hve demnd fr prduct withut hving the BOM, rtwrk, r ther dcument types. There re ls times tht new rtwrk is sent, but mteril cnnt be rdered, becuse JDE setup is nt cmplete. Pckging dcumenttin items n BOMs re in numericl rder, nt by pckging events s n the "ld sequence f style" BOM (ppendix D). Items listed in sequence f events wuld be mre helpful. The rtwrk nd drwing dcuments still cme in t dd times, nt ll tgether s requested. One withut the ther is nt effective. PCNs d nt lwys cme first, nd smetimes mnufcturing is nt sure why they re getting the revisins/duplicte cpies. At times they receive PCNs nd d nt knw wht finished gds re ffected, nd d nt receive revised BOMs t the time prt number is revised. Cnsistency with the rtwrk trnsmittl letter needs t be develped by hving the letter stte wht it is replcing r if it is new. It wuld be gd ide t reference the pplicble PCN. An imprtnt mnufcturing view is tht the verll pckging dcumenttin wuld be better delivered if it used n electrnic medi rther thn pper (hrd cpy), since they d nt lwys receive the relevnt dcuments in timely mnner. A webbsed prgrm, which lets

Rbert Fiedler nd Dugls Tenps presented the fllwing infrmtin t the 2001 Interntinl Cnference n Trnsprt Pckging: The trnsprt pckging mrket is grwing t rpid rte. The mrket fr these prducts munted t $30,000,000,000 in mteril csts in The verll pckging mteril csts fr the trnsprt pckging mrket in the United Sttes industry ws prjected t be $40,000,000,000 by the end f The entire pckging industry will spend n estimted $1 15,000,000,000 in pckging mterils by 2001, nd the ttl wrldwide estimte is ver $300,000,000,000. Furthermre, the impcts f distributin pckging methds extend well beynd the direct csts. The effects n prduct qulity, distributin expense, line nd distributin thrughput, nd cmmunictin perfrmnce typiclly dwrfs the mteril expense. (2) This is why it is imprtnt t hve pckging dcumenttin system tht incrprtes n effective dt nd cntent mngement slutin. By this mens, the pprprite infrmtin cn get t the right user in Web frmt. A webbsed prgrm is csteffective system tht cn ssist in decisinmking nd imprve supply chin mngement. A well dcumented nd rgnized effrt t imprve pckging designs nd implementtin prcess, cmbined with rel webbsed dcumenttin mngement system, cn enble n rgniztin t drmticlly reduce their pckging csts. T test this hypthesis, tw types f pckgingrelted specifictin mngement sftwre systems were subjected t dt nlysis. Durcell's sftwre system is clled DCS (Dcument Cntrl System) The new technlgy nlyzed in this study, DCS 6.0 Pr, shuld be replcement prduct r upgrde fr Durcell's pckging deprtment. After Durcell's dt mngement needs were estblished, the dt nlysis ws perfrmed under n pertr cnditined cmputer envirnment in rder t cmplete n evlutin fr DCS 6.0 Pr. Bth types fdevelped sftwre systems led up t prducing the Bill fmterils (BOMs), which will disply ll the pckging cmpnents fr building the pckged prduct. Cmprisns were mde between DCS 2000's nd DCS 6.0 Pr's end results with respect t hw effectively they prduce pckging specifictin dcuments tht g int the BOM dcument. The evlutin sectin utlines the prticulr nlysis prcedures used in this study. 13

25 2. PACKAGING SPECIFICATION MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY 2.1. An Outlk n Currently Develped Sftwre in the Mrketplce In the pckging industry, few cmpnies exist fr the develpment f pckging specifictin mngement sftwre.
