These topics are of paramount importance to your work. The instructors are all experienced firefighters and know what really matters. The S-GARD Safetytour seminars that take place at your fire station enable you to extend your knowledge in blocks of theoretical instruction. You can then put your acquired knowledge to the test in the practical part of the seminar. FIT FOR FIRE/RESCUE hands-on workshops with international teams Our hands-on workshops bring you together with other rescue workers from across Germany and its neighboring countries. Under the guidance of an international team of instructors your team will tackle a set of demanding exercises. This is where you get to demonstrate your communication and teamwork skills in rescue and firefighting situations. In addition to the practical exercises, you will attend specialized symposiums to extend your knowledge of subjects such as Visibility at unsecured accident sites and Stress during emergencies. 8 GORE PARALLON system PARALLON SYSTEM GORE-TEX GORE PARALLON system We use the GORE PARALLON system as the insulating layer and moisture barrier in our ULTIMATE jackets and pants. It was specifically developed to reduce the hazards of heat stress and burns especially in connection with moisture such as extinguishing water and rain. The protective effect is reduced if the inside of the jacket or pants gets wet. Heat transfer and escape times are also shortened. The lightweight, breathable and water - proof system is a heat shield against extreme heat and scalding that still gives you full maneuverability. Having worn the ULTIMATE series in firefighting situations, many colleagues are now convinced of its properties. Their findings: protects reliably and is pleasant to wear even in wet conditions! How the GORE PARALLON system protects you Well protected from flames and high temperatures thanks to your protective equipment: We utilize the GORE PARALLON system for the ULTIMATE range so that neither moisture nor heat can accumulate between layers and promote burns and scalds. It combines breathable heat insulation with a GORE-TEX moisture barrier: It consists of two membranes between which the thermal insulation is located. The special design ensures a high level of breathability that in turn reduces the danger of heat stress. Sweat is also quickly channeled away from the skin. 10 TITAN experience report TITAN with HAINSWORTH technology We at S-GARD have developed the TITAN series specifically for you as firefighters. The use of patented Hainsworth TITAN face material technology minimizes the hazards of heat stress. One special feature of the durable design is that it forms protec tive air pockets between the DuPont Nomex face material and the Kevlar layer when exposed to heat development. We have developed the durable and highly breathable TITAN range of clothing to protect you from heat stress and other hazards during firefighting and rescue operations. How does it stand up in real conditions? Swiss firefighters put it to the test. Heavy smoke development in the Gotthard Road Tunnel, many vehicles involved with numerous injured. A few minutes after receiving the alarm, the team from the fire station is on its way to a fire in one of the world s longest road tunnels. The men and women of the fire service routinely train for real emergencies to ensure everything runs smoothly during a deployment. And it goes without saying that they must be able to rely on their equipment. The Swiss colleagues put their trust in the TITAN series. Many of them know just how physically tiring firefighting and rescue operations in a tunnel can be. There are often long access routes they have to cover in full gear to extinguish the source of a fire or rescue trapped victims. This is exacerbated by the tight conditions in the tunnel, poor visibility due to smoke and high temperatures. The Swiss firefighters have advanced to the site of the accident: They are wearing breathing equipment because of the smoke. Three seriously injured people must be freed as soon as possible from their cars and brought to the rescue vehicles at the mouth of the tunnel. They use heavy metal-cutting tools to do the job. Powerful technology team Firefighters need to remain able to work even under arduous conditions. How can TITAN protective clothing support them in these situations? Through the lightweight and flexible layer design in which two specially aligned technologies work together. The extremely durable HAINSWORTH TITAN fabric is used as the face fabric. Its special feature: It creates protective air pockets under extreme heat develop ment. At the same time body heat escapes quickly to the outside through a highly breathable GORE-TEX membrane with AIRLOCK Spacer technology (more on p. 73): This reduces the hazard of heat stress and scalding. Its re-drying properties are also practical because the insulation absorbs only very little sweat. From the professionals Swiss firefighters completed the exercise after 90 minutes just like every day. They extinguished the fire shortly after arriving at the scene, before it could jump over to other automobiles. All of the seriously injured were rescued and taken to local hospitals. The operation was particularly gruelling as the accident occurred in the middle of the tunnel. However, heat stress and fatigue did not set in a positive result for the efficient team and TITAN

16 ADVANCE PROGRESS On a deployment If you compare the current hazard analyses of fire services around the world with the results of previous years you will notice that the number of burns and scalds is on the decline. The reason for this is that protective clothing now affords increasing amounts of insulation and can withstand ever higher temperatures. However, this goes hand in hand with a significant increase in strain caused by heat stress. Instead of suffering from burns, more firefighters are succumbing to circulatory collapses caused by overheating and exhaustion, says Markus Schmid, responsible for development at S-GARD. This is exactly our starting point for the development of the ADVANCE PROGRESS series: We decided to opt for an especially lightweight layer design for the jackets and pants so that you are exposed to as little heat strain as possible. They enable body heat to dissipate quickly and the overall light weight significantly improves comfort, explains the expert. Lightweight layers with high-level protection Simultaneously, the clothing affords you reliable protection from flames, heat, contamination and weather conditions: That is why we use a resilient material mix for the face fabric. The membrane used as the middle layer makes the coat and pants impermeable to extinguishing water and protects the insulating lining from hazardous contaminants, says Markus Schmid about the benefits of the layer design. 18 Safetytour Strong as a team The other stations face similar tasks where what matters is speed combined with team communication. Both can save lives in real-life situations! Training these skills and developing them further with professional support is a central component of our Safetytour workshops. Who s making sure that the candle in the pitcher doesn t go out? asks one of George s team colleagues. This is one of the daily tasks that each team in the town of Berchtesgaden has to deal with, in addition to the 10 exercises it has to complete. Having completed the rescue and firefighting exercise, the firefighters are sweaty but have satisfied smiles on their faces. They take off their wet helmets and throw their dusty jackets over their shoulders. One firefighter raises a wax-smeared beer pitcher as if it were a trophy. The candle inside has burned down a fair way but is still flickering. THE NEXT WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD ON THE ISLAND OF RÜGEN IN 2017! Another task successfully mastered by the team. The firefighters return from the FIT FOR FIRE / FIT FOR RESCUE workshop to their fire stations with loads of inspiration for their daily work, a lot of new knowledge, and several new techniques to help them cope with extreme situations. SAFETYTOUR TRAINING FOR EMERGENCIES A two-day, large-scale operation in Berchtesgaden! Around 400 male and female firefighters and rescue workers from all over Germany take part in the Safety tour event of the year: the FIT FOR FIRE / FIT FOR RESCUE Practical Workshop The teams face a demanding set of training exercises under real conditions and in full protective gear. Our ex perienced trainers carefully follow every step and provide support to the rescue workers so that every hand movement counts in the event of an emergency. A rescue exercise in the midday heat, further impacted by the confines of a tunnel and the weight of the equipment. On the outside, one of the more than 20 trainers laughingly urges his colleagues inside the wooden tunnel to saw faster. These and other questions are discussed daily by our developers and production specialists. The goal: to continuously improve or redevelop detail features so you get the longest EVERY DETAIL COUNTS Even though some product details on your protective clothing may appear inconspicuous at first glance, safety seams and reinforcements are important details that make your work easier and safer. Our experienced employees in development and production work closely together. Their specialized knowledge and the materials used are totally dependable. possible use out of your protective clothing. This is how the PRX9000 shoulder protectors, the Tetra system and the MOVE + design evolved all of them are S-GARD developments that have become standard features. Cleaning tip You can use the special wash dummy to clean your jacket when it is open. It consists of strips of fabric that you simply wrap around the zips to prevent them from damaging your jacket. This means your jacket is also thoroughly cleaned on the inside. Complex development Pay attention to functionality when you need a new protective jacket or pants. They should fulfill every standard and of course look good. That is not only what you want when you wear it. We also demand it of new protective clothing, explains Markus Schmid, head of development at S-GARD. Additionally, materials should be easy to work with that is important for production. Schmid and his team also face another challenge: designing an item of clothing that can accommodate all of the components such as pockets and reflective striping in all sizes. No matter whether the jacket is a size S or XL, the radio always needs to fit inside the pocket, and the number of reflective stripes need to fulfill standard requirements even on the smallest sizes, says Nicole Bennek, clothing technician responsible for pattern construction at S-GARD. Processing materials and details Schmid s colleagues in the sample production department take care of the details with skilled craftsmanship. One of the things they do is apply additional reinforcements to sleeve and jacket seams. These are the first places to suffer damage through abrasion, as the head of development knows. The reflective stripes are quadruple stitched to ensure they last as long as possible. We have also added extra reinforcements to jacket and pant seams that are subject to heavy wear and tear. You can also rely on top quality when it comes to zips and threading. With all this attention to detail, sewing a jacket or a pair of pants can take between two and four days. It is not uncommon for them to consist of more than 100 separate parts. ULTIMATE pants, for instance, are made from 177 components. Some are immediately recognizable, others are concealed within the overall piece

32 SKYGARD Height Rescue No matter whether you are travelling in a rescue helicopter, abseiling from a cliff face, or working in a rope rescue unit or an offshore installation your work clothing needs to be light and fit well and protect you from wind and rain as well as from injury. 37 Technology AIRLOCK Spacer technology WINDSTOPPER technology The functional layer with AIRLOCK Spacer techno logy works like an air cushion to protect you from heat, moisture and hazardous liquids. The insulation layer between the face material and the inner lining is especially light and breathable. Sweat and water vapor can easily escape and evaporate. As a result, your protective clothing dries quickly and the risk of injury from scalding is reduced. These flexible and lightweight materials provide ample room to maneuver. Water-repellent face material, a WINDSTOPPER Membrane and the warm, soft inner lining ensure you are always appropriately dressed for work in any weather conditions. Your clothing is absolutely windproof but it s also breathable and comfortable to wear. GORE-TEX seam seals and moisture blocks Every seam and even the smallest seam holes are permanently watertight! This is guaranteed by the special GORE-SEAM TAPES combined with the comprehensive GORE seam sealing technology. Together they make your clothing lighter, safer and more durable. They keep your clothing light and you dry even if the original water and oil-repelling impregnation on the face material begins to fail after numerous cleanings or frequent use. This is achieved using moisture blocks specifically designed by Gore in the front, sleeve and torso sections. They prevent penetration by rain, extinguishing water and other liquids. This also reduces the risk of scalding through heat buildup. GORE COMPETENCE GORE-TEX layer system The GORE-TEX membrane between the insulating layer and the face material is resistant to heat and cold over a range from +327 C to -250 C, it protects against chemical contamination from ph 0 to ph 14, and is still permanently waterproof even after 25 wash cycles. Effective protection from heat, flames and moisture We use GORE-TEX membrane technology in most of our products because it is permanently waterproof and reduces heat stress and therefore keeps you efficient even in extreme situations.
