4 Requirements 1a & 1b First Aid & CPR a. Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while scuba diving, including hypothermia, hyperventilation, squeezes, fatigue, overexertion, injuries by aquatic life, motion sickness, nitrogen narcosis, and decompression illness. b. Identify the conditions that must exist before performing CPR on a person, and explain how to recognize such conditions. Demonstrate the proper technique for performing CPR using a training device approved by your counselor. Requirement 2 Before completing requirements 3 through 6, earn the Swimming merit badge. 4
5 Requirement 3 Understanding Safety Discuss the Scuba Diver's Code with your merit badge counselor, and explain the importance of each guideline to a scuba diver's safety. Requirement 4 Scuba Certification Earn an Open Water Diver Certification from a scuba organization recognized by the Boy Scouts of America scuba policy. 5
6 Requirements 5 & 6 Research Explain what an ecosystem is, and describe four aquatic ecosystems a diver might experience. Find out about three career opportunities in the scuba industry. Pick one and find out the education, training, and experience required for this profession. Discuss this with your counselor, and explain why this profession might interest you. What We Offer Part 1 A program that allows completion of all the SCUBA Merit Badge requirements, other than the Swimming MB. A targeted First Aid for Scuba Diver & Emergency Oxygen Administration class that will allow scouts to meet requirements (1a) for the Merit Badge. The NAUI Scuba Diver program, an internationally recognized beginner level certification program, specifically tailored to Boy Scout groups working towards the Scuba Merit Badge in order to meet requirements 3 & 4. Craig and Heidi are both Merit Badge counselors for the Scuba Merit Badge and will work with scouts on all requirements, including 5 & 6 during the Scuba Diver class. 6
7 What We Offer Part 2 Knowledgeable staff with experience working with youth, committed to making learning to dive a safe, fun & empowering experience. 50% off our regular program tuition, with use of all snorkel and scuba gear included. We can come to you for the classroom sessions! This makes it easy to fit into regular meetings that you might have scheduled. Pool and ocean sessions require the group to meet at our facility in Seattle. We can also conduct the classroom sessions at our facility. Costs Tuition Regular BSA Program Scuba Diver Class $299 $ First Aid for Scuba & Oxygen Administration Class $100 $ Study materials Scuba Diver Study Materials $ 84 $ 60 First Aid/O2 Study Materials $ 29 $ 21 Total for both programs, including materials: $ 268 Equipment NONE - Use of equipment is included in tuition. 7
8 Time Commitment Approximately 5 classroom sessions of 2 3 hours each Approximately 3 pool session evenings of hours each Two ocean sessions full days from ~ 9am to 5-6pm. + Homework! Each scout will need to complete several hours of homework before each classroom session. Time Frames/Logistics Classroom Sessions (~5): Can be scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, or Sunday afternoon/evenings. Wednesday & Thursday are also options, but less preferable for us. Pool Sessions (~3): Monday or Tuesday evenings. Some Saturdays may be available. Ocean Sessions (~2): Two full days, during the summer could be two weekdays, during the school year can be over a weekend. 8
9 Class Sizes & Grownups/Parents Minimum class size is 6 A class can involve scouts from multiple troops Maximum is 12 Grownups/Parents Registered BSA leaders can join the class at the same discounted rate Other adults would get a 10% discount off of standard $299 tuition Minimum age: 12 no maximum age Medical Issues Issues that are likely to preclude one from SCUBA: Epilepsy, seizures, diabetes, history of blackouts/fainting, spontaneously collapsed lung, severe asthma/diseases that constrict the lungs This is not an all inclusive list, just the major points. If you have a health concern, we are happy to send you the exact forms you need to fill out so you can consult with a physician before deciding if SCUBA is for you. The form is also available on our website, on the BSA page. All participants in this program will be required to have a physicians release prior to the water training. 9
