3 ( ) -3- NC2150(E)(M17)V QUESTION 1: SAFETY AND REGULATIONS Define housekeeping. Explain why housekeeping is so important and desirable in the workplace. 1.2 Study the sketch in FIGURE 1 and answer the questions that follow: FIGURE Does the sketch represent an unsafe act or an unsafe condition? Give the reasons for your answer. Explain how this unsafe situation can be avoided. 1.3 State any FIVE objectives of the Mine, Health and Safety Act (MHSA) 29.

4 ( ) -4- NC2150(E)(M17)V QUESTION 2: FIRST AID 2.1 As a firstaider you will always come into contact with sick people or casualties. This means running the risk of picking up infections that can be transmitted from one person to another. State THREE precautious which you would observe to minimise the risk of any infectious transmissions. (3) 2.2 A Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) consultant has to advise a client on first aid facilities in the workplace. Explain, using the number of employees as a reference, the first aid facilities which must be provided in the workplace. (3) 2.3 Choose a description/word from COLUMN B that matches a symptom in COLUMN A. Write only the letter (A F) next to the question ( ) in the ANSWER BOOK. Name TWO types of shackles.

Give SIX examples of company rules and procedures that could lead to disciplinary action. (6) A fire in an electrical panel was caused by a short circuit. Name the class of fire and the type of fire extinguisher that can be used to extinguish the fire. Monthly inspections of fire extinguishers are necessary to maintain the proper operation of fire extinguishers. State FIVE checks that should be carried out on ALL types of fire extinguishers during the monthly inspection. QUESTION 5: SOLDERING AND GAS WELDING 5.1 Indicate whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE. Choose the answer and write only 'true' or 'false' next to the question number ( ) in the ANSWER BOOK. Correct the statement if it is FALSE Solder will adhere to dirty surfaces. Temperature changes will affect the solder alloy. Cleaning solvents are highly flammable. Tinning is the process of lightly coating the materials to be soldered with solder. IC is the abbreviation for Internal Circuit. (8) 5.2 Explain what the difference is between the following: A proper soldered joint and a cold soldered joint. Soft and hard solders in terms of composition. 5.3 Explain the term flashback arrestor. 5.4 You have to braze two metal plates to form the base plate for a centrifugal pump.
