Each valve provides a high level of balancing accuracy using an easy to set multiturn balancing setting wheel. To ensure an accurate reading, a straight length of 5 times the diameter of the pipe should be piped prior to the valve and a straight length of at least 2 times the pipe diameter should be piped after the valve. If a pump is installed near the valve, a straight length of 10 times the diameter of the pipe should be piped prior to the valve to reduce an inaccurate measurement due to turbulence. 2
3 Setting Flow Coefficient values (Cv value = gpm@1psi P): Flow Coefficient Table Number of Turns for Setting Balancing valve Size / / / / Cv Values Based upon the flow or differential pressures required within the system, the flow can be determined by using the equation: Q = Cv. p Q = flow Cv = flow coefficient p = differential pressure For correction of fluids other than water, the following equation applies provided the viscosity of the fluid is the same for water, which is the case for most glycol and brine solutions: Q R = Q M δ QR = real flow QM = measured flow δ = specific density of fluid 3
4 Flow Rate Graph: 1 foot of head (FOH) = psi The selection of the for an application is dependent upon the required flow and the approximate available pressure drop available in the branch where the valve will be installed. 1. Plot the required flow rate and pressure drop within the columns and then draw an extended line between these plotted points to the Cv column. 2. Draw an additional horizontal line from the intersection of the Cv column across the valve sizes. 3. Based upon the intersection of the horizontal line with the valves sizes, select the appropriate sized valve. In selecting the valve, an allowance for adjustment should be considered if during commissioning the pressure drop is lower than designed. This reduced pressure drop may result in an undersized valve. 5 Determination of Valve Setting: Measuring the flow requires the use of the valve s two test plugs, which accept the measuring test needles, 003Z0324. Based on the desired flow rate and measured differential pressure the necessary setting can be determined by one of two methods: 1. Graphically Utilize the flow rate graph for the to determine the valve s necessary setting. 2. Calculation and table - Based on desired flow rate and differential pressure calculate the required Cv value. Then using the Setting Flow Coefficient Value table on page 3, find the closest Cv value for the valve size and follow the column to the top to determine the number of turns required. Q C v = p C v = flow coefficient Q = flow p = differential pressure *A portable slide rule is available as a quick reference to determine the setting for the balancing valve. Setting Example A fan coil requiring 2 GPM through a 3/4 valve with an available pressure drop of 2 psi after accounting for the coil, valves, and piping. 1) Graphically Refer to the Flow Rate Graph. a. Plot both the required flow and available differential pressure within the appropriate columns. b. Draw a line through the two points and extend it to the Cv column. c. From the Cv intersecting point draw a horizontal line across the valve sizes. The intersection point of the horizontal line will provide the necessary number of turns for the valve being used. 2) Calculation a. Calculate the Cv value: 2gpm Cv = Q = p 2 psi = 1.4 b. Referring to the Flow Coefficient table, scroll across the row for the size of the valve used and find the calculated Cv. c. Once located go to the top of the column to determine the required setting of the valve. Number of Turns /2" /4" " Cv Value 5
6 Setting the Valve: To return the valve to factory default setting (fully open / no memory stop) follow Steps 1 and 2. 1 Note: If the valve is still in factory default setting, proceed directly to Step 3. Step 1. Turn the handwheel counter clockwise until it stops. 2A Internal Spindle 2B Step 2. Hold the handwheel in position and using the appropriate Allen Key, turn the internal spindle clockwise until it stops. Valve Conn. Turn the handwheel clockwise until the marker lines up with the correct number of turns setting on the valve collar (see Determination of Valve Setting section for further details). Example: To set the valve at 1.4 turns, first turn the handwheel clockwise one complete revolution until the bottom edge of the handwheel is level with the first horizontal line on the valve collar and the number 1 is visible under the marker (see photo 3A). Continue to turn the handwheel less than half a turn clockwise until the marker is over the number 4 (see photo 3B) Step 4. Set the internal spindle by holding the handwheel in position and turning the internal spindle counter clockwise until it stops. Note: When setting the internal spindle, there will be no flow through the valve. Step 5. After setting the internal spindle, reopen the valve by turning the handwheel counter clockwise until it stops (see photo 5). Internally the valve is now open the number of turns necessary to provide the desired flow rate. The valve will not open beyond this maximum setting. Step 6. Attach information tag to the valve through the opening on handwheel marker. 6

The valve shall be suitable for heating or cooling closed loop circuits. The balancing valve shall be capable of positive shut off and have P/T plug connections for testing. The valve adjustment shall be done via hand wheel for accurate adjustment and precise flow control. The balancing valve shall a hidden memory feature stop to prevent unauthorized adjustment and to ensure a return to the preset position. The memory stop within the valve shall be set via inner stem of the valve to prevent tampering. The valve shall be a Danfoss balancing valve. 7
